Welcome to the Nameberry community! Here you’ll find our forum rules, as well as some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from our members.

If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for here, try searching using the :mag: icon at the top right of your screen, or start a new topic in All About Nameberry.

What are the Forum Rules?

1. You must be at least 13 years old to participate on the Nameberry forums.

If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without parental consent, we are bound by law to delete that information, including all posts and account details. If you believe we have collected any information from a person under the age of 13, please contact us at support@nameberry.com.

2. Keep the discussion civil and respectful, even if you disagree.

Please do not use abusive, offensive or discriminatory language, and avoid personal attacks. If you dislike a name or an idea, try to include a short explanation of why – this is much more helpful than single-word responses like “Awful” or “No”, which add little to the conversation.

3. Be yourself.

Anyone over the age of 13 can participate in the Nameberry community, so please do not pretend to be anyone or anything you are not. Moderators reserve the right to suspend users who are suspected of posting fake information. Multiple accounts per person are not allowed. If you would like to create a new account please let admin know so the existing account can be deleted.

4. Don’t push specific religious or political beliefs.

Mentioning your personal political or religious affiliation in a neutral way, as part of an organic discussion about names, is fine. But please do not enter into lengthy debates, proselytize, or create topics solely for discussion of religion or politics. Avoid spreading fake news or anti-scientific information.

5. Remember that this is a public forum, and search engines index these discussions.

Keep all language, images and links suitable for ages 13+, and only post details you are happy to share with the world. Do not share other people’s personal information without their consent.

6. If you see a problem, flag it!

This is the quickest and simplest way to let the moderation team know that there’s an issue.

To flag a post: click the three dots in the bottom right corner of the post in question and then click the little flag icon that appears. You will then be given the option to add more detail about the problem, and a notification will be sent to all moderators.

7. Avoid public troll-hunting.

If you suspect someone is faking, do not engage. Please just flag the post or send one of the moderators a message.

8. Please read our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy before posting.

These documents describe your (and our) behavior and rights related to content, privacy, and laws. To use this service, you must agree to abide by our Terms of Service.

Please note that staff reserve the right to remove any content and any user account for any reason at any time. Moderators do not preview new posts; the moderators and site operators take no responsibility for any content posted by the community.

Can I change my username?

Unfortunately not. You would need to reregister a new account with a different email address if you wanted to go by a different name on the forums.

What do the titles next to people’s usernames mean?

You can choose to display a title next to your username, by going into Preferences > Account and scrolling down to “Title”. The options available to you will depend on your Trust Level and which badges you have earned.

Member, Regular, Leader

These titles are based on Trust Level: Member = TL2, Regular = TL3, and Leader = TL4.

Aficionado, Devotee

These titles are based on badges earned by visiting the community for 100 (Aficionado) or 365 (Devotee) consecutive days.

Junior Member, Senior Member

These are titles carried over from our previous forum platform; they are now obsolete but some members have chosen to retain them for their gravitas! :sunglasses:

What are Trust Levels and how do I move up?

Trust Levels are awarded based on your time spent on the forums and your participation. You can learn more about the system – and how to reach the next level – here.

Is there a list of common abbreviations?

How do I do an advanced search?

Click the :mag: icon to the left of your avatar to search. From the homepage, you can search the whole forum, or click “options” to do an advanced search.

If you’re inside a category or topic, clicking the same search icon will give you the option to search only that category or topic.
