1. Naming a Father

1: ‘NAMING X’ Form

Genre of [name_u]Story[/name_u]: Dramedy play-script

Time Period/Location: Modern [name_u]Day/name_u, United Kingdom

Brief Plot: The story isn’t about him but rather his daughter, but it’s his death that sets the story in motion.

Character Description: He’s a madcap painter who is a total people magnet. His wife is the opposite- very no-nonsense and reminder this, alarm that, lunches with clients etc. He isn’t too concerned about what people think about him and paints because he loves it and because it delights everyone else. His daughter gets lots of her mannerisms and quirks from him as well. I need “dad” sounding names, and if it helps he’s Irish and Welsh so those types of names would be appreciated. Oh, and his last name is Sheehy.

Immediate Family (if relevant): His wife is [name_m]French[/name_m] and her name is [name_f]Annette[/name_f], he has a brother named [name_m]George[/name_m] and I’d rather not share the main character’s name because it’s not an actual name but rather a Gaelic word although she has her name for a very special reason. What I need is a father’s name, not opinions on the other characters.

Already Considered (if relevant): [name_m]Hubert[/name_m] which I love for him, he’d be nicknamed [name_u]Bertie[/name_u], but it’s not set in stone yet. Also [name_m]Gerald[/name_m], [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and [name_m]Gregory[/name_m].

[name_m]Don[/name_m]’t Suggest These Names: Anything not from [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], [name_m]Wales[/name_m], [name_m]Britain[/name_m] or [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] please

Anything else?: I’m looking specifically for names that would have been popular 40 or so more years ago, proper dad age.

Thanks in advance!

[name_m]Eoin[/name_m] (oh-in) Sheehy

While I do like the name [name_m]Eoin[/name_m], it seems a bit too popular. I’m more looking for stuffy old type names i.e. [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] but more Irish if that makes sense?

[name_m]Hubert[/name_m] feels more grandad than dad to me. If he’s got a brother [name_m]George[/name_m] then [name_m]Gregory[/name_m] and [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] would work as having both G names, and both are dad-sounding names, while [name_m]Charles[/name_m] also works in a much more regal pairing with [name_m]George[/name_m].

Other suggestions (basically, just firing out names of men I know that are 40-50 ish)

[name_u]Howard[/name_u]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]
[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Nigel[/name_m]
[name_u]Neil[/name_u]
[name_u]Tony[/name_u] (usually as a nickname for [name_m]Anthony[/name_m])
[name_m]Steven[/name_m]/[name_m]Stephen[/name_m]
[name_m]Richard[/name_m]
[name_m]Colin[/name_m]

I’m going with [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] nn [name_u]Gerry[/name_u] to keep with the “G” theme. Thanks so much!
