We need help! My husband and I have completely different taste in names. We are not finding out the baby’s sex and I am starting to really worry our baby will be nameless. We only have about 10 weeks left to decide!

Our last name is [name]Flann[/name] so sadly names starting with an F or Ph are out as they sound odd.

Here are our top picks:

Girls:

Any ideas for names that we would both love??? I thought we had agreed on [name]Cordelia[/name] for a girl but now my husband isn’t so sure anymore…

Well, for girls, I would try to avoid [name]Josephine[/name] because of how it clashes with your last name. Maybe [name]Jolene[/name] could be a mn compromise and still act as a nod to your relative named [name]Josephine[/name]? For a first name, have you considered [name]Audrey[/name]? It seems to be slightly more your style than [name]Aubrey[/name]. Perhaps [name]Ramona[/name] would work as well (blends your husband’s fav [name]Ramone[/name] with your more sophisticated style).

For boys, I really don’t know what to say. The names on your list are great, but I don’t like the one’s on your husband’s list at all. : /

Oh my gosh! I had such tunnel vision that I didn’t notice [name]Josephine[/name] clashes with our last name!! Thanks for pointing that out :slight_smile: Maybe he would go for choosing the middle name for a girl haha.

I did suggest [name]Audrey[/name]. DH didn’t like it. He’s very picky but doesn’t suggest much and when he does it’s usually a little out there. I had a list of 50 girls names and he didn’t like any of them :frowning: I detest his boys names. I’m really starting to panic. I’m on here obsessively looking for something and no luck yet. Too bad about [name]Audrey[/name]-- I thought that would be a good compromise too (it’s just one letter different from [name]Aubrey[/name] so I don’t see what’s so different about it). What about [name]Audra[/name] or [name]Ardith[/name] instead?

I don’t think [name]Marley[/name] or [name]Aubrey[/name] work well for a girl either-- they are a little too masculine to me. I’m surprised that you’re using [name]Josephine[/name] as a mn with the last name [name]Flann[/name]. It sounds clashy as well.

Wow, Caballero? That’s a first. I actually think your boy names can be reconciled. I’m just going to throw out a bunch of stuff, but you seem to like Irish names, but they’re very laid back everyman names that I think can mix with your husband’s cowboy thing.

[name]How[/name] about [name]Marlene[/name] (either [name]Mar[/name]-len-uh or [name]Mar[/name]-leen: the last can be combo between [name]Jolene[/name] and [name]Marley[/name] but would be more your speed) and [name]Roman[/name] (mix between [name]Ramone[/name] and [name]Ronan[/name]).

I like the idea of Marlene Josie Flann.

First of all, from your husband’s favorites you have to rule out [name]Jolene[/name] because the -n sound at the end of [name]JoleNe[/name] does not work with [name]Flann[/name], neither does it work with [name]Josephine[/name] in the middle.

[name]Marlene[/name] [name]Josie[/name] [name]Flann[/name] is a good suggestion. I like the idea of [name]Josie[/name] as a substitute for [name]Josephine[/name] in this case as it gives the full name great syllabic flow: a three, two, one pattern!

In general names without strong L or N sounds seem to sound best with [name]Flann[/name]. Sometimes if it is a soft L or N sound it works. And sometimes depending on where in the name the L or N occur it is fine.

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful suggestions! There are some gems on here and I will chat with my husband when he gets home. Now I’m double thinking Joesphine. I cant believe i didnt notice how it clashes with [name]Flann[/name]! I like the [name]Josie[/name] suggestion or I may use her middle name, [name]Antoinette[/name] instead. Our son’s middle name is to honour my grandfather so we wanted to honour my grandmother if we have a girl as they are the only living great grandparents our children have. PS sparrowfinch you’re bang on! My husband’s suggestions are usually music/cowboy/skateboarding/surfing related. The only reason he agreed to name our son [name]Oliver[/name] is because [name]Ollie[/name] is a skateboard trick lol!
