Now in their 60s, [name_f]Ebba[/name_f] and [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] were proud of their expansive, if complicated and broken-up family. All of their children were adults and partnered, and they had a myriad of grandchildren. Their farm was one of the biggest in the county, and the [name_u]Banks[/name_u] family name carried weight. Impressively, [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] ran for mayor of their town in 1928 and won, gaining more influence over the city he had lived in all his life.
[name_u]Gabriele[/name_u] had been estranged from her family ever since moving to [name_f]Chicago[/name_f] and becoming a doctor. After her second daughter, named [name_f]Geneva[/name_f], was born in 1921, [name_u]Gabriele[/name_u] decided to reconcile with her family. She returned home, where she made amends with her parents and introduced them to her husband [name_m]Booker[/name_m] and two daughters. [name_f]Ebba[/name_f] and [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] eventually forgave her, and they shared how proud they were that she had a good family and had managed to become a successful doctor despite the betrayal they had felt at her departure. Thus, [name_u]Gabriele[/name_u] and her family visited the farm every few months.
[name_u]Gabriele[/name_u] also made up with her twin brother [name_u]Temple[/name_u], whose family with [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] had stopped growing, all five of their children now over the age of ten. As [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] was in his mid 60s and struggling to do all the work around the farm, and [name_u]Temple[/name_u] was now 41, he took over main operations of the farm so his father could focus on being mayor. Thus, [name_u]Temple[/name_u] fulfilled his dream of running the family farm, and he trained his children, especially his eldest son [name_m]Errol[/name_m], to take over. [name_m]Errol[/name_m], 20 but single for the moment, was more than happy to inherit the farm someday.
[name_f]Zibiah[/name_f] was still a contented preacher’s wife in southern Ohio, and in 1924 she added a fourth and final son to her brood with [name_m]Zebedee[/name_m]. [name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] was the biggest troublemaker of the family, while his three older brothers were calmer and more obedient, all interested in the ministry like their father. [name_f]Zibiah[/name_f] rarely visited home more than once a year due to the distance but still had a cordial relationship with the family.
[name_f]Marilla[/name_f] had succeeded at getting a teaching job in a town not far from home, and soon after she met a man 5 years her senior named [name_u]Leland[/name_u] [name_u]Halston[/name_u] who ran the mill in the town she taught at. The two married in 1922, and the next year in 1923 their kind-hearted son [name_m]Lowell[/name_m] was born. Two years later in 1925, his rambunctious little sister Willmay was born, the most energetic grandchild of them all. [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] maintained the closest relationship with [name_f]Ebba[/name_f] and [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] outside of [name_u]Temple[/name_u], visiting home at least once a week, especially to spend time with her favorite sibling, [name_m]Solon[/name_m].
[name_f]Orly[/name_f] had a less kind fate than the rest of her siblings. [name_m]Irving[/name_m] and [name_f]Orly[/name_f] married in 1922 soon after settling down in [name_m]Detroit[/name_m], and they began trying to have a family. However, a doctor revealed that [name_m]Irving[/name_m] was infertile, and thus the two could not have kids. They were crushed, but began making plans to adopt. Before these plans could come to fruition, however, [name_m]Irving[/name_m] was tragically killed in a factory accident in 1928. Severely depressed, [name_f]Orly[/name_f] returned home to the family farm and has been living there doing nothing for the past year, trying to recover from her grief.
Her twin brother [name_f]Lovis[/name_f] had been faring better through the '20s. While he and his wife faced rampant discrimination due to their interracial marriage, they made a good life in [name_m]Cleveland[/name_m], buying a small apartment after having their first daughter, [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], in 1921. [name_f]Lovis[/name_f] was promoted to a manager position in the steel mill after this, while Eulaila made good money doing seamstress work while caring for the children. After their second daughter, [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], was born in 1924, the family had saved up enough to move into a real house in the city. Once they settled, Eulaila and [name_f]Lovis[/name_f] continued to expand their lovely family, having [name_m]Castor[/name_m] in 1927 and [name_f]Jobyna[/name_f] in 1928 in order to fill their new home. [name_f]Lovis[/name_f] and [name_f]Orly[/name_f] still had their inseparable twin bond, and whenever the farm was too stifling for [name_f]Orly[/name_f], she would come stay at Lovis’s house for a week to grieve in her twin’s comforting embrace.
Finally, the youngest child of the family, [name_m]Solon[/name_m], was finally a grown man at 22. He was the quietest and least ambitious of the [name_u]Banks[/name_u] children, just wanting a steady job and a little family with no aspirations beyond that. In 1928, he became engaged to a local girl named [name_f]Carry[/name_f] Clines, a similarly quiet person with similar low-shooting aspirations in life. They are waiting until [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] agrees to give them a plot of land to farm for themselves before officially tying the knot and starting the family they both desire so strongly.
