Things were steadier for the [name_u]Banks[/name_u] family during the hard decade of the '30s than for most, the wealth they had gathered over the years helping them survive the Great Depression. [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] was reelected mayor and remained so throughout the '30s, while the farm continued to expand. Most of the adult children remained on their paths; [name_u]Gabriele[/name_u] continued her groundbreaking career as a doctor in [name_f]Chicago[/name_f], while [name_u]Temple[/name_u] continued to manage the family farm. [name_f]Zibiah[/name_f] was still comfortably living as a preacher’s wife in southern Ohio, while [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] continued teaching and [name_f]Lovis[/name_f] was still managing a steel mill up in [name_m]Cleveland[/name_m].
The only two children with major life changes were [name_f]Orly[/name_f] and [name_m]Solon[/name_m]. [name_f]Orly[/name_f] continued to remain unmarried throughout this decade, although she eventually got over her grief for the deceased [name_m]Irving[/name_m]. Eventually, in 1934, she left the family farm and moved to [name_u]Paris[/name_u], where she began pursuing a career in sculpting. Her career never took off but [name_f]Orly[/name_f] felt much more at home across the ocean. Meanwhile, [name_m]Solon[/name_m] married his fiancee [name_f]Carry[/name_f] in 1932, and that year they had their first daughter, [name_f]Deloris[/name_f]. After [name_f]Deloris[/name_f] was born, [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] gave the couple a plot of land for themselves to work as they had both wanted. They continued to grow their family, with a second daughter named [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] being born in 1936.
Most of the major changes in the family now rested on the grandchildren, as they were coming of age into adulthood and were beginning to find love and careers. [name_u]Gabriele[/name_u] and Booker’s eldest daughter, [name_f]Lula[/name_f], wanted to be a doctor like them, remaining single as she traveled to [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]York[/name_u] to study medicine. Her younger sister, [name_f]Geneva[/name_f], had no interest in the medical field, instead planning to become an engineer. She was set to go off to university the next year, and she was going steady with a boy from her high school named [name_m]Delwin[/name_m].
Temple’s five children all came of age in this decade, and they all took vastly different paths. His oldest, [name_m]Errol[/name_m], was 30 but remained single, so dedicated to working the farm that he had little time or interest in a wife and children. [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] was disappointed, as he wanted great grandchildren from [name_m]Errol[/name_m], but it was not what he desired. The second son, [name_m]Hiram[/name_m], stepped up to take over the family legacy. He had married to a girl from Akron, named [name_f]Sheila[/name_f] Stimson, in 1932. [name_m]Haskell[/name_m] gave them land to start their own farm that year, and by 1933 [name_f]Sheila[/name_f] gave birth to their first child, a daughter named [name_f]Concetta[/name_f]. They also had two more children, [name_m]Norbert[/name_m] in 1935 and [name_f]Beryl[/name_f] in 1939, with plans to continue growing the family as time progressed.
The younger children of [name_u]Temple[/name_u] did not stay as close to home. [name_f]Ginette[/name_f] moved out to Hollywood in 1936, remaining single as she pursued an acting career on the big screen. Her twin brother, [name_u]Lyle[/name_u], moved down by [name_m]Columbus[/name_m] to work on the large farms his new wife [name_f]Embla[/name_f] had inherited from her recently deceased father, thus gaining much wealth at a young age. The two married in 1937, and in 1939 had their first child, a son named [name_m]Lyman[/name_m]. [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m] moved away from home once graduating high school in 1937, moving to [name_u]Philadelphia[/name_u] where he got a job in the factories and picked up a steady girlfriend named [name_f]Tilde[/name_f].
Zibiah’s brood in southern Ohio followed more devout paths in life. The first and third oldest sons, Myrom and [name_m]Lytton[/name_m], remained single as they entered their 20s, both becoming preachers in towns near where they had been born around [name_u]Dayton[/name_u]. The second son, [name_m]Lemuel[/name_m], got engaged to a girl from their church named [name_u]Kay[/name_u] Newhouse in 1938, planning to marry and have a large family in their hometown they would raise religiously. The youngest son, troublemaker [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], was only 15 but was a rebel, fiercely atheistic and planning to move away the moment he turned 18.
The children of [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] & [name_u]Leland[/name_u] and [name_f]Lovis[/name_f] & Eulaila were mostly too young to move out, all between the ages of 16 and 11 except for Lovis’s eldest, an 18 year old daughter named [name_f]Millicent[/name_f]. She was planning to study to become a teacher like her favorite aunt [name_f]Marilla[/name_f], and she had been dating a boy named [name_u]Satchel[/name_u] consistently throughout high school. When she graduated, they became engaged with plans to marry once she secured a teaching job.
