I’m looking to find a name for the heroine of my novel. I want a name that reflects her personality, the time and her physical description (and after seeing a few posts from other authors looking for names i thought i’d try and see if i got any good answers). The book is set in [name_m]New[/name_m] Orleans in the 1920s. It is a philosophical-Romance that is historically accurate regarding the culture and prohibition. The heroine is a young nurse who falls for an older man who she discovers to be involved in the bootlegging industry. Torn between morality and love for a criminal twice her age.
I originally planned on naming her [name_f]Florence[/name_f], but on second thought gave the name to another heroine in my other book. Another name I thought might be suitable was Rosie. She is sweet, wise, patient, kind and as I’ve described concerned and morally conscious. Her appearance: curly brown hair, brown deer-in-the-headlights eyes, and rosy complextion. She is known as a very beautiful girl. Her best quality is her ability to see good in the worst of people.
I am open to suggestions for her love interest, [name_m]Merrick[/name_m], he has a tough but sweet personality. Rough around the edges personality with a chip on his shoulder because of his hard life. Masculine appearance. He has bright turquoise-blue eyes, short hair, looks young for his age (49), broad shoulered. Also a bit of a redneck.
Looking forward to hearing the replies and helpful suggestions. And tell me what you think about the idea of the story and if it would be a book that you would buy. (Don’t worry about hurt feelings, I like tI hear real opinions and your true thoughts.)
Sounds like a great story! I love that time period, but it can sometimes feel impossible to find a name both accurate and fitting to the character. I love [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], but based on the person you’ve described, I feel like just [name_f]Rose[/name_f] might be a better fit. It kind of makes her sound wiser… does that make sense? When someone says [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] I picture a young girl but with [name_f]Rose[/name_f] I see an intelligent young woman.
Here are some other ideas in case you don’t love [name_f]Rose[/name_f]:
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Bea[/name_f]?
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f], I love [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] as a nickname.
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], I think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] would be a great nickname.
[name_f]Maxine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Max[/name_u]?
[name_f]Pauline[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Maria[/name_f]
[name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] nn [name_f]Dot[/name_f] or [name_f]Dottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]
[name_f]Doris[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Nellie[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]
Sounds great, I just feel like [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] might be a bit stereotypical or common? My suggestions:
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] ([name_u]Josie[/name_u])
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] ([name_f]Meggy[/name_f], Megs, [name_f]Meg[/name_f], etc.)
[name_f]Lilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] ([name_f]Lottie[/name_f])
You could do [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tori[/name_f] or maybe even [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] nn [name_m]George[/name_m] for the girl if that works.
