We’re about 9 weeks away from having our first baby, and now that it’s coming up I’m finding myself more indecisive than ever!
Would love to hear your first impressions, associations, what kind of person you picture with these names… Etc. any feedback is welcome! We only have a few boys names, but the girls names are all over the place. Also open to suggestions! Middle name will be my maiden name (3 syllables), and last name is 1 syllable and starts with B.
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f], [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], and [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] all give me a fairly sophisticated old-Hollywood impression. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] feels a little more cozy (in a good way, to me), and [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] feels sweet and elegant.
My favorite is [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], though [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]'s a surprising and charming choice.
[name_m]Colin[/name_m], [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] are all fantastic, but the one I’m most tickled to hear is [name_m]Colin[/name_m]. I’m so fond of it, and it feels very underused to me. [name_m]Cole[/name_m] is another favorite.
Girls:
[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f]–love it, but not if your surname starts w/B. I have RR initials and it’s embarrassing to have a name that sounds cartoonish.
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]–lovely, dramatic
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]–sweet, classic, country
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]–perfect!
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]–nice, but a tad dated
Boys:
[name_m]Colin[/name_m]–too close to colon
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]–classic…love it!
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] --another fave
[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] – I like it a lot! Pretty and different without being too unfamiliar.
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] – I’m not a fan of flower names, just NMS. Also, because I’ve never actually heard the name [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] on a real person, the first thing that came to mind was “the [name_m]Black[/name_m] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f].” Not pleasant.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] – [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] and classic.
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] – Seems dated.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] – Ditto.
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] – [name_f]Love[/name_f] it.
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] – Nice enough, but somewhat boring [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] – I like it, but I’d rather see it as a nickname. I think it would be more versatile that way.
If you’re planning on having more children, I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] would fit together nicely. However, my favorite names from your lists are [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m]. Good luck!
My favorites are [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] & [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] for a girl. I like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f], but they aren’t as nice as [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] or [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]; I know so many Carolines! [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is just… I don’t know, boring? It’s not my style but it isn’t bad. If your last name starts with a B, [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] won’t sound very good. And I don’t really like the name.
All your boy choices are good. I like [name_m]Luke[/name_m] the best. But I really like [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] too. [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] is classic and ages well. [name_m]Colin[/name_m] is more modern, but not in a bad way, in a cool kid way.
I hope that helped. Congrats and good luck!
Thanks for the feedback! It’s fun hearing other people’s impressions. [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] was a front runner a few months ago, so I kept it on the list for this post, but I think I’m on the fence now. We’re due around halloween, so i thought if it was a halloween baby [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] would be a fun choice (the teenage witch! I always wanted to be sabrina when i was a young girl)
[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] was an early favorite and is still a top contender to me. I kind of liked that it was [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] B____. Sort of sounds like a super hero to me. Haha
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] was one my hubby brought up this week and I instantly liked saying it. Still trying to decide if it’s too frilly for me. Doesn’t quite feel natural to say yet even though I really like the sound.
And [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] kind of feels like the ‘safe’ name of the bunch. Not sure how to explain that - but maybe the most agreeable and least out-there choice. (not that any of these names are really far out there).
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] is our fave out of the boys… But funny that someone said too close to colon. Lol. I actually thought of that and thought - no one else would think of that. I still like the name though and I think it’s still number 1.
We might have a little red head coming our way - does that make a difference in which name would fit best?
[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f]- My favorite of your choices. A timeless classic. [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]- Not a fan. All I think of is the [name_m]Black[/name_m] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]- Too common for my likes. [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]- Pretty but also a bit dated. [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]- Cute and could really grow with a child.
[name_m]Colin[/name_m]- My favorite from your list. A nice, solid sounding name. [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]- Too common for my taste. [name_m]Luke[/name_m]- Another nice choice.
I like the boy suggestions. Some girl names, feminine and with a vintage feel:
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Irene[/name_f]/[name_f]Irina[/name_f]
[name_f]Monica[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudette[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] ( a lovely name, another witch related one too, lol)
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
I really liked [name_m]Zackary[/name_m]! And I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Monica[/name_f], [name_f]Colette[/name_f], and [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] too! I suggested all of them to the hubby but they were rejected.
I don’t know what my style is either. I guess I just don’t want there to be multiple kids in their class with the same name. And even though I shouldn’t care what people think, I want it to be a name that most people will think of as a nice name. And a name that travels well so can be pronounced easily around the world since we love to travel.
First off, I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_m]Colin[/name_m] - it’s handsome and not at all over-used. I picture a clever, outdoorsy sort of boy wearing this name well.
As for your girls list, they are all lovely names, but I like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] best of all. Beautiful choices.
Girls - Overall, I really love your spunky classic choices.
[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] - I have a personal association that takes away from this name so I don’t think I could fairly comment.
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] - It’s okay. I’m not a huge fan. I feel like this name would be considered pretentious in my social circle. It does sound pretty though.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - I love, love, love [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. I picture a sweet and lovely girl. It makes me think of sunshine. It ages well.
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] - I really like this name. It might be a bit dated but it hasn’t lost its appeal. I think this name is going to start coming back into fashion soon.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - I had this name on my list for a while. It’s pretty without being frilly! [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] seems like she would be a very down to earth girl.
Boys - My general impression is that all of your boy names are great and any one of them would be a great choice!
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] - It’s short and to the point. [name_m]Colin[/name_m] is studious and charming.
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] - I adore [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]. It makes me think of a smart and curious boy with a great deal of maturity. Be prepared for a nickname if you use this name!
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] - I am a huge fan of short and sweet names. I picture [name_m]Luke[/name_m] as an energetic personality.
I think these are all nice choices, but here’s a break-down:
Girls:
[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] - With this spelling, I would say the more [name_m]French[/name_m] bri-jzeet. I think the [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] spelling is more intuitive to English speakers. It’s a cute name. I picture someone playful.
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] - To be honest, this is one of my favorite flower names and probably ranks high on my overall list. I love it. It’s elegant, creative, intelligent. I’m 25 and a history buff and the only reason I’ve heard of the [name_m]Black[/name_m] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] murder is because of the movie. I don’t think someone born in 2013 will have that name baggage. I could be wrong, but it’s just not recent enough for me to be put off by it.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - I am a big fan of [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and plan to use it someday as mn in honor of my mom, but it’s so dark popular, I think I’d rather meet a baby [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] or [name_f]Bridget[/name_f]. A [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is sweet and caring, though.
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] - Nice name, just nms. But I do appreciate that it’s familiar but not popular. That’s a great quality to me. [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] might not be the popular girl but she’s kind and probably really smart.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - A little dated.
Boys:
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] - I love [name_m]Colin[/name_m], definitely one of my favorite boy names. I don’t think of colon and really, every name is going to have something.
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] - Nice name but I prefer [name_m]Colin[/name_m].
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] - I’ve loved [name_m]Luke[/name_m] for a while, but it might be too abrupt with your ln.
Oh, and [name_f]Marina[/name_f], it’s nice, but to be honest, it seems every Russian female I meet is named [name_f]Marina[/name_f] (not that that’s a bad thing, they’ve all been lovely) but my point is more that in such a global world that this baby will be raised in, it seems like it might be some kind of Baltic [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. (Does anyone have data or is this all just anecdotal?) [name_m]Just[/name_m] something to think about, that it might be more popular in her circles than you think.
According to your list and comments about a name that is more unique and also travels well
I think [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] (spelled [name_m]French[/name_m] way or otherwise), [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f], [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] and even maybe [name_f]Marina[/name_f] all fit this bill.
And if the alliteration isn’t a concern of yours…I like [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] (or any other B name) is cool too.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] are more common, though nice in their own right…don’t have the same feel to me as the other names
(Though other suggestions…similar to those you mentioned…have you thought about [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] and [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] ?)
As a side note, I do know a [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f], couple [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]'s, and a [name_f]Marina[/name_f]…and all are very nice girls/women
As for your boys names…really love [name_m]Colin[/name_m] (though prefer [name_m]Collin[/name_m] spelling), [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] as a full name is great and [name_m]Luke[/name_m], to me while nice is still more of a nn to me than given name.
[QUOTE=froggie_luvah;2043513]
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] - It’s okay. I’m not a huge fan. I feel like this name would be considered pretentious in my social circle. It does sound pretty though.
This was something that I was worried about actually! I’m not pretentious at all and I’m worried it might sound a little ‘too much’ for our personalities. But I really just like saying it and like the sound of it in general. I wonder if we could ‘un-pretentious’ it! Haaa.
And the comment about [name_f]Marina[/name_f] being a very typical Russian name was EXACTLY what my grandmother said. Haha. She’s eastern European and had nothing good to say about [name_f]Marina[/name_f] at all. But it was the first name my husband got excited about and it was pretty adorable to see him getting into the naming process, so I had to give it a chance.
We are in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] so that’s why I liked the [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling of [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f]. I feel like people here could just use either pronunciation.
So much food for thought! Thanks for giving me more to think about!
Girls: [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] - Are you pronouning it the [name_m]French[/name_m] way (bree-ZHEET)? If so, with your “B” surname, it would be a lot like [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] [name_f]Bardot[/name_f]! If your surname sounds quite different from [name_f]Bardot[/name_f], this option could work.
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] - a more exotic flower choice but may run into pronunciation issues. It seems everyone has a different take on how to say it.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - classic and timeless
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] - An old Celtic name. Maybe not so good for a child born at Halloween. [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - I love this name. I think this is my favourite on your list.
Boys:
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] - ok but nothing special
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] - a fine name with a long history but not a fave probably because it’s overused. I do love the Russian version of [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] nn [name_u]Nico[/name_u] the best. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] - short, one-syllable, strong and masculine. My fave from your boys list.
[name_u]Mischa[/name_u] - I’m thinking [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] could be pronounced however people are comfortable pronouncing. In [name_f]Canada[/name_f] I suspect we’ll get about half English half [name_m]French[/name_m]. Ill probably use the english pronounciation but my husband has been saying it in french when we talk about it, and im hoping to one day put her in french school. (him or her i suppose! Still holding out for a surprise). And our last name is only 1 syllable, so it won’t be exactly like Brigittie [name_f]Bardot[/name_f], but I’m sure the BB connection will occur to some people. I don’t think that’s a terribly bad thing. I think it might make her name catchy!
I’ve been calling the little pumpkin [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] for the last day or 2 to see how they feel. Haha. So far [name_m]Colin[/name_m] feels more natural than Dhalia.
[name_u]Baby[/name_u]'s heart beat at yesterday’s appointment was 155 so urban legend says that means its a girl! We’ll see…
Girls:
[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f]-I think of [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] and I am unsure about the pronunciation but quite pretty looking.
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]-Nice and this seems brighter than your other suggestions.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]-Pretty, ordinary but is very practical.
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]-Nah
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]-Nah. I think of Verrucas or mean people from boarding school books.
Boys:
[name_m]Colin[/name_m]-Dislike myself but would be fresh for a comeback.
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]-OK. Best of your boys choices.
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]-OK
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is my favorite from your girls list.
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] is my favorite from your boys list.
[name_m]Both[/name_m] have casual class, familiarity, 1 common spelling, and aren’t overly popular.
Other boys names I’d recommend: [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_m]Calvin[/name_m], [name_m]Zachary[/name_m], [name_m]Quentin[/name_m], [name_u]Micah[/name_u],
