1st Boy after 4 Girls

My wife and I have 4 daughters and have been very confident in each of the names we have chosen for them. However, we are 2 weeks away from our son’s due date and are having a difficult time finding something we really love. My front runners right now are [name]Foster[/name], [name]Julian[/name], [name]Smith[/name] and [name]Rivers[/name]. She really, really wants to name him [name]Jude[/name], but I just don’t think I can do it. It just doesn’t sound like a first name to me. I could easily use it as a middle name. She also loves [name]Sutton[/name] but that one is definitely out for me.

We both like [name]Monroe[/name], but we aren’t sold on it yet. It looks good on paper but I’m not sure I can see myself actually saying it/calling him that. I also like the name [name]Rufus[/name]; is that crazy? [name]Locke[/name] is under consideration as well.

Anyhow, I would welcome any suggestions or feedback. Thanks in advance!

Oh, and our last name is a 3 syllable mouthful that ends in ORD, if that helps.

I find it strange that you can’t see [name]Jude[/name] as a first name when it’s actually one of the only true first names you are considering! That said, I like your taste a lot. You have a lot of surnames and some of them are just too surname-y for me. [name]Foster[/name] makes me think of chicken and [name]Smith[/name] is a little to simple for me, although nice. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Julian[/name] though, and I also like [name]Jude[/name]. [name]Rivers[/name] is confusing to me because it’s clearly the surname with the s on the end and not simply a nature name. I have a hard time seeing a person attached to that name. [name]Monroe[/name] sounds like a girls’ name to me (as in [name]Marilyn[/name]). [name]Rufus[/name] is a little out there, but it could be cute. [name]Locke[/name] is cool, but I can imagine “key” jokes will follow him forever. But the connection to the philosopher (and LOST!) is fun. So, even though that seemed like some negative thoughts, I actually think you have some great options. Think some more about [name]Jude[/name] since it really IS a first name, and I like [name]Smith[/name] and [name]Julian[/name] best.

Why doesn’t [name]Jude[/name] sound like a first name to you? What are your daughters’ names?

You could use [name]Julian[/name] and then nickname him [name]Jude[/name]?
[name]Don[/name]'t like the other names, especially not [name]Monroe[/name] on a boy, I think he’d be teased.

I agree with shvibziks, [name]Julian[/name] nm [name]Jude[/name] is a good compromise. The [name]Jude[/name] in “Hey [name]Jude[/name]” was a reference to [name]John[/name] [name]Lennon[/name]'s son, [name]Julian[/name].

I also really like [name]Smith[/name] and don’t mind [name]Foster[/name] and [name]Rivers[/name], but I can’t see [name]Monroe[/name] on a boy at all. [name]Locke[/name] is nice, and I know that [name]Lachlan[/name]'s all over are called Lach/[name]Lockie[/name] for short, but I like it more as a surname or middle name than a first name.

Suggestions: [name]West[/name], [name]Clark[/name], [name]Blaise[/name], [name]Knox[/name], [name]Eames[/name], [name]Flynn[/name], [name]Quill[/name], [name]Tate[/name], [name]Miller[/name], [name]Ford[/name], [name]Bishop[/name]

[name]Julian[/name] is by far my favorite name on your list and I think a little [name]Julian[/name] [name]Rufus[/name] would be amazing.

[name]Jude[/name] and your last name both end in -d, so it’s not ideal. I like [name]Rivers[/name], but not as much as [name]Julian[/name]. The rest of your names are nms, but [name]Monroe[/name], [name]Locke[/name], [name]Foster[/name], and [name]Rivers[/name] could make nice middles for [name]Julian[/name] if [name]Rufus[/name] just doesn’t feel right. [name]Do[/name] any of those surnames have meaning for you guys?

[name]Julian[/name] and [name]Rufus[/name] are both amazing old roman names, very cool. [name]Julian[/name] nn [name]Jude[/name] seems like a good compromise. [name]Rufus[/name] is my personal favourite though.

I’m going to favor [name]Jude[/name] all day long, for obvious reasons. I think it’s a fantastic name. Funny enough, the other name we considered for our son was [name]Asher[/name] [name]Monroe[/name]. My husband is still holding on to [name]Monroe[/name] if we ever have another boy.

From the rest of your list, I like [name]Julian[/name] and [name]Rufus[/name] a lot, but the others just don’t quite hold up for me.

[name]Jude[/name] or [name]Lochlan[/name] (nicknamed [name]Lock[/name]) would be my choices.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Julian[/name] - and I agree with some of the others, [name]Jude[/name] could be a nn, if you wanted. Not really a fan of the other names you suggested, though I’m actually really intrigued my [name]Rufus[/name]. Not sure yet if I like it - but I might. Perhaps you could share your daughters’ names and we could offer input as to what fits, and maybe some other suggestions?

Haha. We realized a few days ago that most of our names are surnames. I’m not really sure why [name]Jude[/name] doesn’t strike me as a first name; it just doesn’t. Sorry; no real answer for you there.

Our daughters are Raavyn, [name]Reeves[/name], [name]Sloane[/name] and [name]West[/name].

Great suggestions. We already have a [name]West[/name] and have used [name]Flynn[/name] as a middle name.

I am thinking that [name]Monroe[/name] has fallen off the list, as has [name]Rivers[/name]. We both think [name]Rufus[/name] is cool but probably isn’t right for us. I appreciate all of the suggestions about using [name]Julian[/name] as the given name and [name]Jude[/name] as the nn. We are both feeling pretty good about that. We will discuss it some more. Thanks!

Looking at your style from your other children’s names, I think that [name]Foster[/name] (I also love [name]Forester[/name]), [name]Monroe[/name], and [name]Locke[/name] are my picks from your list for your family. I’m also going to suggest these names as possibilities (because you never know what you might see and both fall in love with): [name]Wilder[/name], [name]Mercer[/name], [name]Ranger[/name] (but you already have two other"R" names), [name]Tolliver[/name] (might not be quite your style, but I love it so much that I had to throw it in - Tolly or [name]Olly[/name] could be nicknames), [name]Wheeler[/name], [name]Shepard[/name] “[name]Shep[/name]”, [name]Wylie[/name], [name]Amos[/name], [name]Quinton[/name], [name]Zane[/name], [name]Huck[/name], [name]Zeke[/name], [name]Knox[/name], and [name]Gentry[/name].

Raavyn, [name]Reeves[/name], [name]Sloane[/name], [name]West[/name] and …

Last thing that I want to mention… while most of the names on your list and the list that I gave you to consider aren’t my favorites, that doesn’t make them any less of a great name for your family. Choose what you and your wife love, not because everybody else says it is what you should use

ETA: Somebody else on Facebook pointed out that Quinton means “5”, and since I suggested it also, I thought that I would share that tidbit also
