I thought I had baby’s name picked out and ready to go the second the ultrasound tech said Boy. Now, about 2 weeks away from holding little man I am just not sure.
We planned on [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] to honor my mom ([name_u]Patrice[/name_u]) and FIL ([name_m]Robert[/name_m] aka [name_m]Bob[/name_m]). [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is also my DH’s mn.
Problem: we are a very nicknamey family and I hate every [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] nickname ([name_u]Pat[/name_u], [name_m]Rick[/name_m], Trick, Patch, [name_u]Pax[/name_u], [name_u]Paddy[/name_u]. Heard them all, dislike them all).
So, hubs and I went to the drawing board and came up with 2 other names we both like. I will say, I don’t know that I love any of them. So I need help or thoughts or suggestions!
Options:
Stick with [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]
Or
[name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]/[name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]/[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]
Or
Something else entirely!
Hmm… I would say that if you’re pretty sure [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] will end up with a nickname you don’t like, use [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] as a middle name instead of a first. [name_m]Simon[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] are both so nice.
I’d stick with [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]. Of the several Patricks I’ve met, none of them have used nicknames if that helps
Alternatively, I came up with [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m], [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m], [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] or, [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
There’s also [name_m]Albert[/name_m] which means noble and bright. [name_m]Robert[/name_m]/[name_m]Bob[/name_m] means bright flame and [name_u]Patrice[/name_u] means noble. [name_m]Albert[/name_m] [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Albert[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] etc came to mind
I only know [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]’s that go by [name_u]Pat[/name_u], and because you are a nickname family, I would either move on from [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] or move it to the middle. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you perhaps like [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] and nickname [name_m]Rob[/name_m]/[name_u]Robby[/name_u]? I really like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] is nice as well. Other suggestions…
Since you are a nicknaming family and no short forms appeal to you, I feel like [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] as a first name might not be the right fit for you. I think with your children’s names, [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] is perfect. You could even do [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] if you were willing to do a double middle and then no name is left behind. But if you aren’t loving any of these, maybe you haven’t found the right one yet, or maybe you would feel better if you met him first and took both names to the hospital. Good luck!
I like [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m], and I think if that’s what you really want you should stick with it, and just insist on no nicknames or something. That being said, [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] are stunning, and sound really good with your other kids’ names.
Could [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] be an option? [name_m]Rob[/name_m], [name_u]Robby[/name_u] and [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] are are cute nicknames.
I agree with pp that you could stick with [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] if you feel that you could successfully implement a nickname unrelated to his name once he’s born. I knew a young man who went by “[name_m]Ty[/name_m]” from his childhood nickname “[name_m]Tiger[/name_m].” His given name was [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. [name_m]Tiger[/name_m], [name_m]Bear[/name_m], Cubby, [name_m]Buck[/name_m], [name_m]Buddy[/name_m]/[name_m]Bud[/name_m], [name_m]Butch[/name_m], Bugsy, [name_m]Pluto[/name_m], Curly, [name_m]Spike[/name_m], [name_m]Flash[/name_m], [name_m]Ace[/name_m], [name_m]Captain[/name_m]/[name_m]Cap[/name_m], [name_m]Doc[/name_m], are all nicknames that can work for any given name.
If you’re really still not comfortable with [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], I like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] or [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] with your other kids’ names. I’d also suggest [name_u]Grady[/name_u] [name_m]Robert[/name_m], as [name_u]Grady[/name_u] and [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]/[name_u]Patrice[/name_u] both mean “noble.” I think [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_u]Grady[/name_u] sound like great brothers.
