2 weeks to go HELP! (Previously am I going to regret this?!)

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there!
I had posted some weeks ago looking for advice regarding the name [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] for baby # 2, a girl. I got very mixed feedback which I somewhat expected because it is an Italian boys name. I thought I could ignore any naysayers but have to admit my confidence in the name is wavering in a big way as we get closer to d day. I’m getting really stressed about this and need help please!!

[name_u]Baby[/name_u] girl will be joining big brother 0liver H@zen. His middle name is a location that holds significance for dh and me. We were hoping to have something similar for # 2, hence [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] where dh’s family in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] is from (but no longer living there/he has no ties to it aside from historical family ones). Other names we are considering/have considered, but I’m waiting for that spark include:

[name_f]Mattea[/name_f] - thought for sure this would be her name if not [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] but dh thinks the nn [name_f]Tea[/name_f] sounds like a stripper and I don’t want a [name_u]Matty[/name_u]

[name_f]Vienne[/name_f] - [name_m]French[/name_m] for [name_f]Vienna[/name_f]. Beautiful but better as a middle name I think. Almost seems incomplete.

[name_f]Juliette[/name_f] - like it but I don’t know. It doesn’t wow me. Think it could be very sweet with [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] though.

[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] - I really like dh really dislikes.

[name_u]Everly[/name_u]/everleigh - too trendy perhaps? Not sure what my naming style is.

[name_f]Francesca[/name_f] nn [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] - very pretty but too much name?

[name_f]Mila[/name_f] - eh

[name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] - nn [name_u]Luca[/name_u]? This is a reach for us.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]- not pretty/feminine enough for me but I do think they’re darling.

Name combos considered:
[name_u]Lucca[/name_u] vienne
[name_u]Lucca[/name_u] vivienne (my front runner)
[name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Mattea[/name_f] (name dh wants)
[name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Mattea[/name_f] vienne (what I was leaning towards if not [name_u]Lucca[/name_u])
[name_f]Mattea[/name_f] lucca ( dh doesn’t like the flow)

Names considered but def can’t use: [name_f]Sabine[/name_f] (love this but sounds bad with our last name), [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Marin[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (considered for a while but over it).

Please help! Opinions and new suggestions welcome. I just don’t know what my naming style is. I want something feminine, beautiful but strong. Something unique but not SO out there. Ugh I’m exhausted with myself haha!

Eta: last name starts with S, VERY Italian, 4 syllables, ends in “lini” pronounced “lee-nee”.

I like [name_u]Lucca[/name_u]- maybe all the negative feedback is because its not a name they would personally use? I think sometimes ppl wont be happy with any name unless its one they would personally use.

The name isnt weird, its easy to pronounce and spell so it ticks all my boxes for usability with the added bonus of meaning and you both love it.

I also like strong feminine names but my idea of this may be different to yours my idea of strong feminine names are:
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Liv[/name_f]
[name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Anika[/name_f]

Some combo suggestions:

[name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Francine[/name_f]
[name_f]Mattea[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]

My fav from your list would be [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
I also love [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] but DH dosnt.

Good luck and don’t worry if other ppl wouldn’t personally use your name choice- you probably wouldn’t like theirs either

[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Mattea[/name_f] S_ _lini  This pretty little lady gets my vote!

I think you should do [name_u]Lucca[/name_u]! If you’re worried about the feedback from it, than maybe you’d like [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]. [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is darling!

Maybe it’s just because I live in Europe and spend a lot of time in [name_f]Italy[/name_f], but I just cannot imagine [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] on a girl. That said, it would probably be fine in [name_u]America[/name_u], because the “a” ending does make it sound more feminine. I far prefer [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] or [name_f]Luciana[/name_f] to [name_u]Lucca[/name_u]. I think [name_f]Luciana[/name_f] [name_f]Vienne[/name_f] would be a gorgeous name. Perhaps a slightly different style, but what about [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]? Have you considered using [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] in the middle? I think [name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] is a very cute name. I actually think [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]Everly[/name_u] would sound quite nice together as a sibset.

Some girls go by [name_u]Luca[/name_u], but with an Italian last name, people will assume the name is masculine. If you love it that much and don’t mind gender-bending, go with it.

Otherwise, you could go with [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], nn [name_u]Luca[/name_u]? The problem with the [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] spelling is that it would be pronounced with a ‘ch’ sound, yes?

[name_f]Mattea[/name_f] is also gorgeous!

I like either [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Vienne[/name_f] or [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] with your last name, but since your DH dislikes [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] I would definitely go with [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Vienne[/name_f].

And for what it’s worth I quite like [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] on a girl.

Thanks everyone! [name_u]Everly[/name_u] lucca could be cute but I’m not sure about everly…I like it but don’t love it at this point. We’ve talked about [name_f]Luciana[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], luna etc but the only one I would remotely consider is [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f].

Rmclay- I believe lucca is pronounced just like [name_u]Luca[/name_u] (as in the town in [name_f]Italy[/name_f]). My husband studied in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] and traveled to lucca and said that’s how it’s pronounced. We haven’t heard any differently. Any Italians out there who would pronounce it lucha?

Still open for other suggestions!

I just can’t believe the difference 8 weeks makes. I was SO committed to [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] thinking nothing could sway me, this was THE name and now here I am feeling like I have NO name.

What do people think about mattea? Any other nicknames you can think of besides [name_u]Matty[/name_u] or [name_f]Tea[/name_f] ([name_u]Tay[/name_u]-uh)? I’m actually not big on nicknames but apparently my dh is.

I have no knowledge of Italian besides ‘cappuccino,’ so I’m probably wrong. :stuck_out_tongue:

[name_f]Tea[/name_f] does NOT sound like a stripper - maybe you could convince your husband? Or if he likes [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], he could use that and you can use her full name? It doesn’t seem like you love any of the other names enough to use them as firsts.

I’m not Italian in any way but before I read this post the double C made me think it was pronounced like [name_m]Luck[/name_m]-ah, rather than like [name_u]Luca[/name_u] ([name_m]Luke[/name_m]-ah) - if I was a teacher presented with this name on a class list that’s how I’d stab at the pronunciation. [name_m]Just[/name_m] something you might want to consider if it hasn’t come up before.

And WRT [name_f]Mattea[/name_f], you could use nn [name_f]Mea[/name_f]/[name_f]Mia[/name_f] or [name_f]Maya[/name_f] ([name_f]May[/name_f]-uh) depending on how you’re pronouncing the full name - with a Tee-uh or a [name_u]Tay[/name_u]-uh on the end.

[name_f]Maya[/name_f] is out as a nn. It’s my sisters name. I think that eliminates [name_f]Mia[/name_f] too…too close.

Have definitely heard the [name_m]Luck[/name_m]-ah response but I’m willing to politely correct people. We didn’t make the spelling up to feminize the name or make it more unique and that’s how the Italians pronounce it [name_f]Lu[/name_f]-kah so that doesn’t bother me as much as giving my daughter a name that people see as all boy instead of unisex.

Fwiw my name is [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f] and my entire life I heard “that’s a boys name” (although itd be spelled adrian) and didn’t meet another female [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f] until I was in college! I don’t get that anymore though and it used to bother me when I was younger but I love my name now. I would hope that lucca would perhaps travel the same path?

[name_u]Lucca[/name_u] is definitely pronounced like [name_u]Luca[/name_u] whereas [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] is pronounced like “Luchia”

[name_f]Mattea[/name_f] also strikes me as a very masculine name, even though it is a feminization so I think you really need a cute feminine nickname. What about [name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]/[name_f]Maddie[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f]? [name_f]Mattea[/name_f] is a strong name I’m not sure you really need a nickname.

We have maybe 5 names in Germany that are considered unisex (just not a thing we do here) and [name_u]Luca[/name_u] is one of them. Super popular for boys, rare for girls and I know it’s traditionally a boys name. [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] is a place name though, so of course it can be used for both genders.

If you like [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] the best, use it! It will be fine! Everyone will get used to it and if some people assume she’s a boy just by looking at the name on paper, who cares? Our last name is a very common boy name, and so people assume I am a boy all the time. It’s really no big deal, imo.

I think [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] or [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] are pretty. FWIW, I personally like your idea of having the ‘significant place name’ be in the middle spot (my children have that too!) Have you considered [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] instead of [name_u]Everly[/name_u]? (It seems a bit more timeless, imo) [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] is gorgeous! I also love the name [name_f]Mattea[/name_f] - it’s sweet and pretty! You could always you the nn [name_f]Em[/name_f], or [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] (as in the letter ‘M’). Mielle is pretty too, and I believe that means ‘honey’…but if no other names are as appealing to you as [name_u]Lucca[/name_u], then use it! (Especially since [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] has the very popular feminine [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] to contend with…so [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] with the very popular [name_m]Luke[/name_m] to match seems like a good sibset, in that way!)

This just made me feel a lot better about lucca thank you! I’m actually originally from Germany and most if my family still lives there. I’ve been worried about what they might think since I believe [name_u]Luca[/name_u] is a pretty popular boy name there.

Mouse - I know three babies who are Evelyn so that’s out for us :frowning:

I agree with putting [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] in the mn spot. I like that it’s a spot significant to your husband, and I like that it’s similar to H@zen which you used for your son. I feel like the symmetry between [name_m]Ol[/name_m]!ver H@zen and ______ [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] would work really well. You seem to like a lot of names ending in “A”, which doesn’t flow well to everyone (I generally like it, so it doesn’t bother me). I think something like [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] or [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] (if your husband liked it), etc., would be nice. I feel like with the prominent "V"s, and Everleigh’s trendiness, in general, make it both too similar/matchy and too different to pair with [name_m]Ol[/name_m]!ver, but maybe that’s just me. I do think [name_u]Everly[/name_u] is cute and sweet. I think something like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] would pair really well with [name_m]Ol[/name_m]!ver H@zen, too, and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] has a very similar style to some of the names you’ve been considering.

Good luck!

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is my favorite off your “other list” but I like [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] too. [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] is pretty and [name_u]Luca[/name_u] is OK. The double c’s and the fact it’s an important place name like your sons, makes it a perfect middle. Especially if it’s lost it’s shine. I don’t really like [name_f]Mattea[/name_f]- but only because it seems incomplete- probably a language thing.

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] is cute though.

I think if you love [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] you should go with it. For people who have never heard of the name, the only association they will have is your daughter =-)
I have a friend who has a daughter named M@ttea. It is also a beautiful name. I think they use a lot of nicknames that are not name-related (monkey, peanut etc).
My favorite off your other list is [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]. I love this name and it would be pretty with [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. I don’t think it is too much name with your last name either. [name_m]Just[/name_m] long but that is ok.

Although I know [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] is a traditionally male name, I think the -a ending makes it very feminine and incredibly cute. I would pair her name with something undoubtably feminine though, so that there’s no confusion when she fills out forms or starts school as to which gender she’ll be. [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] [name_f]Vienne[/name_f] is my favorite, although [name_u]Luca[/name_u] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is a very close second.

Also, as far as naysayers go, just remember that once it’s her name, no one will think anything of it. I knew a girl (now a highschooler! Ahh!) named Zackarie. Sounds weird at first, but once you got to know her it made perfect sense. [name_u]Lucca[/name_u] isn’t nearly as masculine as [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] and I think people will get used to the idea and come to love it.
