Year 1: My husband, who is a college professor, was promoted to head of the Philology department. Both our families and I were very proud and happy for him and threw him a dinner party at our home.

Year 2: I finally quit my job as a private teacher and invest my years and years of savings into a much dreamed bookshop and café, called “The Book Nook”.

Year 8: My grandmother unfortunately passes away and leaves me her very large and beautiful Georgian townhouse. It’s twice the size of our house, but proves to be unpractical to live in. We are able to convert each floor into very nice apartments which we rent out to small families and university students. This way, the money we earn each month with rent helps to pay for the taxes and repairs needed in the house. The extra income also allowed me to re-decorate The Book Nook.

Year 9: We welcome our third daughter, [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Eugenie[/name_f], named after my grandmother [name_f]Iris[/name_f] who left me her house and my father-in-law, [name_m]Eugene[/name_m].
Year 10: As a [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] gift to our daughters, we stop by at an animal shelter and adopt a little stray dog with big pointy ears and sad brown eyes, the calmest and most reserved out of all of the puppies. We take our little recluse home and name him [name_u]Wally[/name_u].

Year 11: My husband finds a hobby in pottery making. He is the only man in his class among several bubbly and bright-eyed grannies. He eventually starts to take [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] and [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] with him and their creations start to bring color and even more personality to our house. I especially love the dinosaur mug [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] made me.

Year 12: Mine and my husband’s patience seem to thin and with all the stress, trials and responsibilities of everyday life—working, raising a family, taking care of the house—that all puts a strain to our relationship. We fight a lot and sometimes even sleep in separate rooms. Eventually, we start frequenting couple’s therapy and making a larger effort to spend some more quality time together, leaving the girls at mine or his parents’ almost once a week. With time, things start to become better and we realize that we still very much love each other and want to stick together.

Year 13: My husband and I once again find ourselves expecting a baby by a complete surprise. He is born a bit early but turns out just fine after a few weeks in intensive care at the hospital. Our daughters are delighted to have a little brother. We name our boy [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m].

Year 14: I start a youtube channel just for fun, teaching people how to create DIY projects such as personalized journals and diaries, clothing for the kids and cute decoration items for the house—curtains, tablecloths, aprons, napkins, cushions, headboards, among other things.

Year 15: My husband gets a tattoo on the backside of his shoulder with the birthdates of each of our children written in [name_m]Roman[/name_m] numerals.

Year 16: I finally get to remodel our house and entire kitchen and living area. The girls and I worked together to come up with the perfect not-baby room for them. No more butterflies and pink on the walls!

Year 17: We welcome our fifth child, a beautiful daughter by the name of [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] [name_f]Sabina[/name_f]. [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] was after my husband’s grandfather [name_m]Octavian[/name_m], who was the eighth of 10 children.

Year 18: Our family goes on an exciting family vacation to [name_f]Italy[/name_f], where my husband’s family is from. We have a blast on our two weeks there and we even managed to learn quite a bit of Italian.

Year 19: My sister suffers a car accident and breaks her spine, which means major and risky surgery and several weeks at the hospital. We all take turns visiting and spending the night with her at the hospital. Thankfully, after a month and having to do physical therapy for the rest of the year, she gets better and goes back to being the fire-cracker that she is.

Year 20: Once again my husband and I are going through a very rough patch and unfortunately our 20 years of marriage come to an end. The decision was mutual and we decided on shared custody of the children. He moves to a three-bedroom apartment not too far and I keep our house. Obviously the children are upset, but we all love each other very much and that’s what matters in the end.

YEAR 1: My husband [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and I move to [name_m]Portland[/name_m] from [name_u]Philadelphia[/name_u]. It’s a long way, but we are super exited for this new chapter of our lives. We both manage to arrive with secured jobs and although it takes a few weeks and a lot of headaches and worries, we are able to find the perfect new rental home in a hip, young and vibrant neighborhood.

YEAR 2: After a year living in [name_m]Portland[/name_m], [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and I adopt an adorable sad-eyed little dog from the animal shelter. We name our beloved pup [name_f]Mavis[/name_f].

YEAR 4: I am happy and proud to have found a new job with an alternative publishing company, where I’m chief-editor of the Foreign Female Literature division, working alongside amazing translators from all walks of life and parts of the globe.

YEAR 8: After moving to [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m], my husband decides to pursue an old dream of his which is owning his own bistro. He finds the perfect business partner in his cousin [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] [name_m]Winters[/name_m] who lives in [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_u]Jersey[/name_u] and after a long and grueling few months, open the Wintery [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] Gastro-pub.

YEAR 9: I join a small club of Latina women who are academics, mamas and love literature. Our club, The Mafaldas, meet once every two weeks. It’s so much fun!

YEAR 10: We welcome our newest baby girl, [name_f]Teresa[/name_f] [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_u]Winslow[/name_u].

YEAR 11: We welcome our surprise bundle of joy, baby [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] [name_u]Winslow[/name_u].

YEAR 12: To our great grief and dismay, my mother-in-law, [name_f]Judith[/name_f], falls ill with a severe case of pneumonia and has to stay in the hospital for over a week. My husband and I take turns spending time and taking care of her. Thankfully [name_f]Judith[/name_f] gets better once again and is finally allowed to return home. We are all happy that she is coming to live in our home for a while. The children are ecstatic that grandma will now be living with them every day.

YEAR 13: [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] delivers a whole bunch of adorable puppies who we give away to friends, keeping only one, who we name [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f], after the legendary queen of [name_f]Palmyra[/name_f].

YEAR 14: I finally get to learn [name_m]French[/name_m], which I had been desiring and dreaming of for so many years. It’s a beautiful language, even though the writing is difficult for me.

YEAR 15: We welcome our new baby girl [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f]. We allowed for grandma [name_f]Judith[/name_f] to participate in the naming process as a way to honor her instead of using her name (which she did not like).

YEAR 16: After months and months of tension, my husband and I reach a crossroads in our marriage. We realize that for a longtime we have been harboring not feelings of romantic love anymore for one another, but fraternal love. We end things amicably for our sakes and for the children and [name_m]Ian[/name_m] moves into an apartment with the also recently divorced cousin [name_m]Adrian[/name_m].
YEAR 17: The kids and I decide to for the first time go on a vacation to my native [name_f]Colombia[/name_f] and visit my family in Cartagena. After the separation, this was really the turning point for me, where I found self-love once again and finally came to terms with the new way of things. It was also wonderful to be with my large family once again, especially in the arms of my mother who I have missed for so long and my sister [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. I finally got the kids to learn and come to love speaking Spanish.

YEAR 18: I buy a new house in Cartagena and decide to move back there definitively with my family. [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and I arrange for the children to spend the summer vacations and [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] with him every year. He promises to visit as often as he can.

YEAR 19: I open my own publishing company in [name_f]Colombia[/name_f] and after several successful partnerships with female editors from [name_f]Argentina[/name_f], Chile, [name_u]Brazil[/name_u] and Uruguay, we merge and become one, with the mission to find, invest in and publish novels and academic researches of women of Latin-[name_u]America[/name_u].
