Hey guys, I haven’t been around much this year so my apologies if there is already a thread like this. If so, point me in the right direction and I’ll shut this one down.
So who is getting excited for the SSA stats to be released in 2 weeks? Have you gotten your [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name Pool entries in on [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] (they’re due tomorrow [name_f]April[/name_f] 30!)
I was looking through them and oh my goodness I can’t believe how hard it is to predict the top 10 names this year…both for girls and boys…but especially boys–I mean like 5 or 6 names could be in the #10 spot!
Ok this is a pretty unfocused post to start a discussion, but feel free to take it anywhere SSA stats related! Top 10, biggest movers, what will fall in/out of the top 100 or 1000…
I’m wondering if [name_u]Noah[/name_u] will be knocked off the top this year. I live in the UK so it’s hard to judge, but I feel like [name_u]Noah[/name_u] has been declining recently. Not sure what will replace it though!
For girls I don’t anticipate much movement in the top 10.
I feel like [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] will move up a lot, while [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_u]Avery[/name_u] will move further down. I also think [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f], [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] and [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] will move into the top 100.
Falling out of the top 100, I see [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] and maybe [name_f]Faith[/name_f], while I see [name_f]Princess[/name_f] and [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] falling out of the top 1000, along with [name_f]Kaitlynn[/name_f], maybe.
Boys names i don’t know as well, they dont change as frequently/dramatically as girls names do! I think [name_u]Camden[/name_u] will move into the top 100 though, while [name_u]Noah[/name_u] will hang on to #1
Oh, I was wondering when the new list came out!! thanks for this thread lol.
I honestly don’t know what to think! I’ve never really followed popularity too deeply. I do think that [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] will rise for girls. For boys, I think [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] will rise.
I predict [name_u]Noah[/name_u] will remain #1. I have heard of sooo many babies named [name_u]Noah[/name_u] this year! I could also see [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] reaching the top 10. I also think [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] will move up higher in the top 100 while [name_u]Kayden[/name_u], [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] and [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] might be on their way out.
I think [name_f]Emma[/name_f] will also remain #1 but I can see [name_f]Ava[/name_f] climbing above [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. I agree with the PP about [name_u]Avery[/name_u] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u] going down. I can also see [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] easily reaching the top 10. [name_f]Aria[/name_f] will make a steep climb I predict as well. Maybe [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] will finally be out of the top 100 this year!
I forgot to ask…what names are you watching for pop culture connections or other reasons? I will be watching [name_u]Rio[/name_u] for both genders and there’s an outside chance the boy version could reach the top 1000…if so that would probably be due to the Olympics since it has been very steady in boy usage over the past several years. [name_m]Prince[/name_m] and [name_m]Bowie[/name_m] will also be interesting to watch. I think [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] will drop not only because of the existing trend but there’s also the additional Duggar turn-off factor. I am face-palming myself for not picking [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] as a falling name in the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names Pool! I think the GoT trendiness is going away and [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] could experience a huge drop, fraction-wise. I think [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] ("[name_u]Theo[/name_u]"…along with [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m]) will increase quite a bit not only due to the existing trend but [name_f]Ivanka[/name_f] Trump’s son could push it even higher.
[name_u]Everest[/name_u], [name_u]Ash[/name_u], [name_m]Ansel[/name_m], and [name_u]Ari[/name_u] poll better than expected in my own polls on this and other baby naming sites so I think they all have potential to increase quite a bit. I think [name_u]Ash[/name_u] might rise partly from hearing [name_u]Ash[/name_u] [name_u]Carter[/name_u] in the news and also because [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] is finally going away as a popular girls name. I hope to see Geneva enter the top 1000 just because its one of my vetoed favorites!
I think [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] will increase by a large number (color names are in, it rhymes with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]) and [name_f]Zoey[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], and [name_u]Mason[/name_u] will decrease significantly.
[name_u]Noah[/name_u] may have peaked (#-of-babies-born-wise) last year. Or maybe it will peak this or next year. So I think the absolute number could rise slightly or decrease. However, I fully expect it to remain in the #1 ranking spot because most of the other high-ranking boys names are on a consistent downward trend. [name_u]James[/name_u] is the highest ranking rising name that could conceivably increase enough to overtake [name_u]Noah[/name_u]…but last year there were 19511 Noahs and 14705 [name_u]James[/name_u], and 4800 is a huge gap to overcome for [name_u]James[/name_u] to overtake [name_u]Noah[/name_u], especially because even if [name_u]Noah[/name_u] falls in #, I don’t expect it to plummet more than ~1000. That would leave [name_u]James[/name_u] to increase 3800, which is asking a lot. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is the highest-ranking name that is rising rapidly, but it would have to rise by ~7500 to overtake [name_u]Noah[/name_u] which isn’t realistic.
I think the girls top 10 might be:
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
But [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] could be #1, [name_f]Ava[/name_f] could easily overtake [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] for #3, [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] could be flipped, and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] has potential to enter the top 10, maybe as high as #9.
Names from pop culture that I think will rise:
*Anything from the Trump family (politics aside, numbers of people seem to go for Presidential names and many of the members of this family have unusual names that I think could rise now…[name_m]Donald[/name_m], [name_f]Ivanka[/name_f], [name_m]Baron[/name_m], and so on).
*I agree on [name_m]Bowie[/name_m] and [name_m]Prince[/name_m]! I don’t see [name_m]Prince[/name_m] going far, but I think [name_m]Bowie[/name_m] for sure has a chance of soaring.
*[name_u]Addison[/name_u] for boys and [name_m]Ross[/name_m]…not sure where you are from, but the Chicago Cubs won the world series for the first time in forever, and these are some of their most well-known players’ names. (sidenote: a friend of mine fully intends to use [name_u]Addison[/name_u] if they have a son, for this very reason!)
*[name_m]Arrow[/name_m]: I believe a celebrity used this for one of his twins…I definitely see this rising!
I actually expect [name_m]Donald[/name_m], [name_m]Clinton[/name_m], and [name_u]Hillary[/name_u] to continue their falling trends, perhaps even accelerate their decline because I think people will avoid the most polarizing names. Although I think the effect will be smaller for [name_f]Ivanka[/name_f] and [name_m]Baron[/name_m] because they are unusual names anyway and the politics connection isn’t quite as strong (particularly for [name_m]Baron[/name_m])
I’m super excited, and it’s bizarre because I’m from the UK, but more familiar with the US stats, because I tend to hang around on NB and Behind the Name, or watching You Tube name videos, and mostly the default is US stats…! I think that, in general, the girls’ names tend to vary more, and honestly don’t know whether [name_u]Noah[/name_u] will still be on top for boys, but am guessing so. I think that [name_f]Emma[/name_f] will be second to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] this time, but who knows if I’m right? It is exciting, though.
I think that [name_f]Emily[/name_f] will fall out of the top ten and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] will take her place. I think that [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] will go down a few spots (will be at maybe 8 or 9). [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] will probably be up at #5 or #6. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] will probably drop to #7 or #8. [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] will both probably drop a few spots but still stay in the top ten. I think that [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] will take the #1 spot and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] will take #2. This is what I think that the girls list will look like:
A name that someone picked for the contest that ends tonight to choose the highest-debuting name in the top 1000:
[name_u]Sailor[/name_u]. For both sexes, but especially for girls I can really picture that one skyrocketing in 2015.
Here’s my guess for the boys top 10:
[name_u]Noah[/name_u]
[name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_u]Mason[/name_u]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_u]Michael[/name_u]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
I am very interested to see if [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] continues on enough of a tear to break into the top 10, or if it is “too British” to catch on that quickly. Maybe [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_u]Michael[/name_u] will tie, I can’t decide which order those should be in. And #10 is also a toss up with [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], or [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] being the most likely to land there.
When exactly are they being released??? Confusing, when you are in the UK. I think that [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] will be higher than before, and maybe in the top 10. I still expect [name_u]Noah[/name_u] to be to, but not certain. I predict [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] for the girls’ #1.
I had been thinking [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] might decline but it may not quite do it this year . [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] (e), [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] could decline. [name_u]Madison[/name_u] too. Watch me be totally off!
[name_u]Noah[/name_u] might fall but maybe not just yet.
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] , [name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_m]Milo[/name_m] rise
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] I think could rise . [name_f]Louise[/name_f] , [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] could rise. [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] may decline.
They’re released the Friday before Mother’s [name_u]Day[/name_u]. Last year they were announced in the 8am Eastern Standard Time hour on the Today show.
EDIT
…and a watched pot never boils.
Looks like the SSA administration is releasing it on facebook live this year at 9:25 EST
For boys Elijah is in, Alexander is out, James and Benjamin climb, Mason drops
The girls dropped overall but [name_f]Emma[/name_f] stayed on top
Bowie jumped a lot but not into the 1000
Ivanka rose quite a bit (not into the top 1000 but still), Hillary also rose a bit to my surprise (I said surprise not dismay)…Donald and Clinton down, Baron pretty even, Theodore gained a lot
I’ve only gone through the top 50 but I am pretty shocked about the 13 spot increase of [name_u]Riley[/name_u] since I thought that trend had been dying down. I am loving the huge jump [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] made! The top 20 didn’t really surprise me - nice to see [name_u]Madison[/name_u] going down while [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] move up. [name_f]Camila[/name_f] and [name_f]Mila[/name_f] both increased quite a bit which is lovely while the outdated [name_u]Allison[/name_u] and [name_f]Alexa[/name_f] tanked heavily. Looking forward to checking out the rest of the girls.
For boys I am thrilled with the climb of [name_u]Owen[/name_u] but I hope it doesn’t become too trendy! I knew [name_m]Henry[/name_m] would make a big jump. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] all made a decent jump as well! While [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] and [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] are going down.
