We are expecting our second boy and looking for more help on names. We are looking for a name that has lots of meaning behind it, is recognizable but not overly common and will go well with our first boys name.
We live in [name_f]Florida[/name_f] and love it here, so much so that our wedding had an old world [name_f]Florida[/name_f] theme. We both love the ocean and everything associated with it. My husband grew up fishing and diving since he was a little boy and I studied marine biology. We went on a diving trip for our honeymoon and go diving in the [name_f]Florida[/name_f] [name_m]Keys[/name_m] every year. We’re looking for a meaningful name that reflects our love for these things.
Our first boy is [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. He is named predominantly after the [name_f]Florida[/name_f] [name_m]Keys[/name_m]. [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] key is considered the northernmost of the true [name_f]Florida[/name_f] [name_m]Keys[/name_m] and Key [name_u]West[/name_u] is the southernmost of the populated keys. We expanded [name_u]West[/name_u] to [name_m]Westley[/name_m] because we both loved the movie the princess bride growing up and used an instrumental version of the theme song in our wedding.
Now we need another boys name to go with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m] that has a similar level of meaning. Here are our ideas so far, but we’re open to any suggestions.
[name_m]Alon[/name_m] – Filipino for wave. We like this for a number of reasons. First, the Philippines is in the coral triangle, the area of the highest biodiversity of coral in the world and the region where we went diving for our honeymoon. Second, the meaning wave is similar to the meaning of my name, which means white wave. We just wonder if this is too unusual sounding? Perhaps it would be good as a middle name?
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] - A waterfront park that my husband often fished at growing up. We also will occasionally meet Grandpa here on his boat to go fishing. This is currently our front runner as it has the most meaning. My husband really likes this one, but there are a few things that bother me about this name. I don’t like that both boys will have names beginning with E (I know others will like this, but I prefer for them to have their own initials.) I don’t like how trendy the -son names are currently, and I also don’t like that this is more commonly used for girls than boys. I may need to just get over these things, but am definitely looking for feedback.
[name_m]Tide[/name_m] - if it weren’t for the detergent, we would love this as a name. Would still consider for a middle, however the one syllable is difficult since our last name is also one syllable. This is the best ocean term we’ve been able to come up with.
Stradic - name of a fishing reel my husband uses. He loves this name and thinks it sounds cool. I don’t like how it sounds with our last name name and it feels made up to me.
[name_u]Ray[/name_u] - we love stingrays and manta rays and this could also reference a ray of sunshine, but this doesn’t feel like a substantial enough name.
[name_u]Ridley[/name_u] - a species of sea turtle. Not sure we like the sound of it though.
[name_m]Sean[/name_m] – while not directly having an ocean meaning, it does have sea right in the name and I like the sound of it. It is also the Irish variant of [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_m]John[/name_m] is a common name in my family. We don’t have very much Irish heritage in our family though. Too far fetched?
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] – [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] Inlet is a state park in [name_f]Florida[/name_f], though we’ve never actually been there. I like the sound of this name and feel that it matches [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] in being recognizable but not too incredibly common. It just doesn’t have the same level of meaning behind it.
