2nd Boy - Ocean or Florida Theme

We are expecting our second boy and looking for more help on names. We are looking for a name that has lots of meaning behind it, is recognizable but not overly common and will go well with our first boys name.

We live in [name_f]Florida[/name_f] and love it here, so much so that our wedding had an old world [name_f]Florida[/name_f] theme. We both love the ocean and everything associated with it. My husband grew up fishing and diving since he was a little boy and I studied marine biology. We went on a diving trip for our honeymoon and go diving in the [name_f]Florida[/name_f] [name_m]Keys[/name_m] every year. We’re looking for a meaningful name that reflects our love for these things.

Our first boy is [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. He is named predominantly after the [name_f]Florida[/name_f] [name_m]Keys[/name_m]. [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] key is considered the northernmost of the true [name_f]Florida[/name_f] [name_m]Keys[/name_m] and Key [name_u]West[/name_u] is the southernmost of the populated keys. We expanded [name_u]West[/name_u] to [name_m]Westley[/name_m] because we both loved the movie the princess bride growing up and used an instrumental version of the theme song in our wedding.

Now we need another boys name to go with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] [name_m]Westley[/name_m] that has a similar level of meaning. Here are our ideas so far, but we’re open to any suggestions.

[name_m]Alon[/name_m] – Filipino for wave. We like this for a number of reasons. First, the Philippines is in the coral triangle, the area of the highest biodiversity of coral in the world and the region where we went diving for our honeymoon. Second, the meaning wave is similar to the meaning of my name, which means white wave. We just wonder if this is too unusual sounding? Perhaps it would be good as a middle name?

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] - A waterfront park that my husband often fished at growing up. We also will occasionally meet Grandpa here on his boat to go fishing. This is currently our front runner as it has the most meaning. My husband really likes this one, but there are a few things that bother me about this name. I don’t like that both boys will have names beginning with E (I know others will like this, but I prefer for them to have their own initials.) I don’t like how trendy the -son names are currently, and I also don’t like that this is more commonly used for girls than boys. I may need to just get over these things, but am definitely looking for feedback.

[name_m]Tide[/name_m] - if it weren’t for the detergent, we would love this as a name. Would still consider for a middle, however the one syllable is difficult since our last name is also one syllable. This is the best ocean term we’ve been able to come up with.

Stradic - name of a fishing reel my husband uses. He loves this name and thinks it sounds cool. I don’t like how it sounds with our last name name and it feels made up to me.

[name_u]Ray[/name_u] - we love stingrays and manta rays and this could also reference a ray of sunshine, but this doesn’t feel like a substantial enough name.

[name_u]Ridley[/name_u] - a species of sea turtle. Not sure we like the sound of it though.

[name_m]Sean[/name_m] – while not directly having an ocean meaning, it does have sea right in the name and I like the sound of it. It is also the Irish variant of [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_m]John[/name_m] is a common name in my family. We don’t have very much Irish heritage in our family though. Too far fetched?

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] – [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] Inlet is a state park in [name_f]Florida[/name_f], though we’ve never actually been there. I like the sound of this name and feel that it matches [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] in being recognizable but not too incredibly common. It just doesn’t have the same level of meaning behind it.

This is such a lovely theme and I love all the thought going into this.

While [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]'s use as a gender neutral name I feel is not really a big deal, I definitely understand your concerns about the trendiness and the matching initials. The initials would probably bother me the most. That being said [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is very nice with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u].

I honestly love [name_u]Ridley[/name_u]. I think practicing saying it out loud might make the sound more appealing. The sea turtle association is great and I really like [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]. If you aren’t sold on this as a first name choice I would recommend it in the middle spot, the -ley ending in [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] and [name_m]Westley[/name_m] makes for a nice connection without being overly matchy.

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is great! This might seem like a silly suggestion, but would it be possible for you to visit the state park before baby arrives? Going and making some memories might give this name the extra little bit of sentimentality is needs. (And honestly it just nice to take a little vacation before baby if you can.)

Top choices:
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_u]Ridley[/name_u]. I feel like this name would hit all the sweet notes if you’re okay with not picking the most personal option.

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]Ridley[/name_u]/[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u]. Despite your concerns about [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], it is definitely the most meaningful choice on your list which still makes it a very strong name.

[name_u]Ridley[/name_u] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]. If you decide you like the sound of [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] in the first spot, [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] makes a great middle here that allows for a meaningful name while also eliminating the concerns you have with it in the first name spot.

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Alon[/name_m]. While this isn’t the greatest sounding combo, [name_m]Alon[/name_m] is a very nice name and if you strongly desired using it in the middle, then first name [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is one of your best options. [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] [name_m]Alon[/name_m] also works, but I don’t see you using it because it doesn’t utilize at least one of your top choices.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! We will definitely consider [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] more and may even consider taking a trip to visit [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] Inlet. I agree [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] as a middle corresponds nicely with [name_m]Westley[/name_m].

That being said, we are still leaning more towards [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] as a first name because of the level of meaning behind it, but feel like none of the middle name choices are good enough. Anyone have any other thoughts or idea?

I think you have a good shortlist going. My favorite first names for you are [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. (There are actually two brothers named this in the band Palaye [name_m]Royale[/name_m].) It sounds like [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is winning, and it is honestly a big favorite of mine. It also has the same vibe as [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]. The disparity between male and female usage isn’t crazy high.

I love [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] as a middle option with either name, and it goes nicely against [name_m]Westley[/name_m]. However, if that’s too matchy, then my next choice is [name_m]Tide[/name_m]. I don’t think [name_m]Sean[/name_m] is far fetched, but I like how the other names are more on theme. [name_u]Ray[/name_u] as a middle for [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] makes it feel a little more masculine, if that helps.

One more I thought of for you is Mariner.

I love how much thought you are putting into this! I’m definitely voting [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]. You said it’s the most meaningful and for me that trumps everything.
I literally had every concern you had when I named my 2nd. We wanted to name him [name_u]Lennon[/name_u]. His big sister was [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and I thought them sharing an initial was corny. Also I hated how trendy it had become. And I always thought I disliked unisex names so it bothered me it was gaining momentum as a girl’s name faster than a boy’s name. But, we went with it and I’m so glad we did. I would have regretted it if I let those reasons stop me because in the long run, they don’t matter. My [name_u]Lennon[/name_u] is 3.5 and I’ve never met a kid who’s name for him better.
Also, I find [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] super handsome. I much prefer for a boy than for a girl.
Middle name I think [name_m]Tide[/name_m] or [name_m]Alon[/name_m]. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Tide[/name_m] is stunning and I love the meaning behind [name_m]Alon[/name_m] and how it connects to your name.

Thank you for the input and also for your personal experience llbaby22. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] has been growing more and more on me and the meaning behind it can’t be trumped. We are still considering other names but this is likely a portion of the name, either in the first spot or the middle.

We have completely crossed Stradic and [name_m]Alon[/name_m] off the list. I vetoed Stradic and my husband vetoed [name_m]Alon[/name_m]. Since we weren’t in love with any of the combinations, we found some more options to add to our list:

[name_u]Finley[/name_u] or [name_m]Finnley[/name_m] – Reference to fins – either fish, shark, dolphin or Scuba. If he’s anything like me or my husband, he’ll act like he was born with a pair! I like the nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u] but don’t love [name_u]Finley[/name_u] as a first name as this is also more popular for girls. Would it be odd to use it as a middle but use nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u]?

[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] – [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] [name_u]Reed[/name_u] was a co-writer of the endangered species act and played a large part in Everglades restoration and protection. He also played a large role in protecting the northern keys and establishing Biscayne National [name_m]Park[/name_m]. He was the nation’s first full-time environmental advisor.

[name_u]Taylor[/name_u] – [name_m]Fort[/name_m] [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] in Key [name_u]West[/name_u] is the southernmost state park in the US, and the last stop on US 1 before hitting the Gulf. It’s also supposed to have the best beach on Key [name_u]West[/name_u]. We’ve never been here, but we visit Key [name_u]West[/name_u] every year. There is also the [name_u]Francis[/name_u] S. [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] Wildlife Preservation area which encompasses a large portion of the Everglades.

Our favorites combos thus far are:

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Finnley[/name_m] - With this combo, we would consider using the nickname [name_u]Finn[/name_u], which I think would help alleviate some of my concern about [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] being too trendy or feminine.

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]

[name_m]Sean[/name_m] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] - This one doesn’t utilize [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], but the combo sounded nice together.

We appreciate anymore thoughts you’re willing to give!

I like [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Finnley[/name_m] best, it seems to me that you do as well (since you’re trying to place [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is every possible combo). :stuck_out_tongue:

For that reason, I wouldn’t worry about either [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] or [name_m]Finnley[/name_m] being too popular or “feminine”… and I also like the idea of [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as a nn.

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] or [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_u]Finley[/name_u] are very handsome choices!

Have you considered using Key as a middle name?

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] or [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] gets my vote. I love the subtle yet strong connection to [name_f]Florida[/name_f], they both have the same feel as [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and style wise I think they go best with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u].

I think [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] and [name_u]Ridley[/name_u] are great choices.

A couple other suggestions:
[name_m]Hurley[/name_m] - sea tide
[name_u]Calder[/name_u] - rocky water
[name_u]Bay[/name_u]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] - [name_m]Son[/name_m] of the sea
[name_m]Fisher[/name_m]
[name_u]Harbor[/name_u]
[name_u]Kai[/name_u] - sea
[name_u]Marley[/name_u] - [name_f]Pleasant[/name_f] seaside meadow
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u] - Sea-born,
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u] - Sea warrior
[name_u]Murray[/name_u] - Settlement by the sea
Triton

I quite like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], and [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m].

I feel they all go well with Finnely as a middle, but if you’re worried about it being too neutral then you could go with the simikar [name_m]Finnian[/name_m], meaning “fair”. You could still use the nickname [name_u]Finn[/name_u], plus it ties to your name.

I also adore pp’s sugestions of [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and [name_u]Morgan[/name_u], and I would like to suggest [name_u]Florian[/name_u] as a middle option.

[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] [name_m]Finnian[/name_m]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]Florian[/name_u]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] Finnely

Thank you all for the feedback. We’re leaning towards [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Finnley[/name_m] right now. Not sure how best to spell the middle name though…

Is [name_m]Finnley[/name_m] spelled this way because of a specific association?

If not, [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] or [name_u]Finley[/name_u] would be customary.

There’s not a particular association. That’s just the spelling my husband said he liked better. My husband is very particular about the nickname being spelled similarly to the full name, thus if we used [name_m]Finnley[/name_m], we could use [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as a nickname but if we used [name_u]Finley[/name_u] or [name_u]Finlay[/name_u], he would insist that the nickname is spelled [name_m]Fin[/name_m], which seems like less of a name to me. I would be fine using [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_u]Finley[/name_u], but it bothers him. We also were thinking that since both [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] and [name_u]Finley[/name_u] are both more popular for girls, that [name_m]Finnley[/name_m] may appear less feminine (it’s currently only ranked for boys). I’m still open to any of the options.

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] I see. I agree [name_m]Fin[/name_m] feels less complete, but it would go with your ocean theme! I think [name_m]Fin[/name_m] can work for your purposes. While both [name_u]Finley[/name_u] and [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] are regarded as gender neutral, [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is definitely the one used most prevalenty for girls so I think [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] would be a good option. If DH really wants to use [name_m]Finnley[/name_m] there’s nothing wrong with it. With it being in the middle spelling mistakes won’t be a huge issue. If it were in the first name spot I would caution against it for that reason.

I like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] best and it goes sooooo well with [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]. [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] & [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m].

I’m afraid [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] has been hijacked by the girls and would avoid giving this name to a boy. It will go the way that [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] and [name_u]Jordan[/name_u] have, which began as strictly boys names. When he goes to school, he’ll have female classmates named [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], not male.
