3 Generations of Women....Help

I need advice on the names I’ve picked for 3 women…a daughter (the main character), her mother, and grandmother.

They are not married so all 3 women have the last name Sweet.

The youngest (the main character) is [name]Carly[/name]. I do not wish to change this name.

[name]Carly[/name]'s mother: is small in structure, fair blonde, blue-eyed. Was once beautiful but her hard life has caught up to her. This women has had no luck in life, but it’s because she is her own worst enemy. She’s an alcoholic, occasional drug user, seems to be with different men all the time. Has no idea who [name]Carly[/name]'s father is. [name]Every[/name] few years she tries to get her life back on track but always relapses back into her usual ways.

[name]Carly[/name]'s grandmother: was [name]Carly[/name]'s center well growing up…that is when they saw each other. She was kind, wise and full of advice. small in structure, but full of life. Could find the good in anyone and survived no matter what situation she was in and tried her best to teach [name]Carly[/name] to do the same. Was known for her warm brown eyes.

My ideas for the mother: [name]Dolores[/name], [name]Arlene[/name], or [name]Lorraine[/name]
My ideas for the grandmother: [name]Beverly[/name], [name]Gloria[/name], [name]Martha[/name], or [name]Ruby[/name]

[name]Do[/name] any of the names fit??

For the mother, I like [name]Lorraine[/name] the best. [name]How[/name] about [name]Nadine[/name], [name]Roxanne[/name], [name]Maxine[/name], [name]Aileen[/name] or [name]Eileen[/name]? For some reason, I picture a woman who has fallen on hard times with these names. My apologies to anyone out there who likes them (me :)) or who loves someone with them! I like all of the grandmother names with the exception of [name]Beverly[/name]. [name]Ruby[/name] is a “warm” name for sure and the other two [name]Gloria[/name] and [name]Martha[/name] give me a grandmotherly feeling too. Other suggestions: [name]Shirley[/name], [name]Ada[/name], [name]Audrey[/name], [name]Dorothy[/name], [name]Florence[/name], [name]Mabel[/name]/[name]Maybelle[/name], [name]Irene[/name], [name]Sadie[/name], [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Lila[/name]. Good luck with your story!

[name]Crystal[/name], I like [name]Arlene[/name] or mischa’s suggestion of [name]Eileen[/name] the best for [name]Carly[/name]'s mother. As for the grandmother, I like [name]Gloria[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] most because they sound as warm and wise as you describe her. I also second mischa’s suggestion of [name]Dorothy[/name]. [name]May[/name] I also suggest [name]Margaret[/name]? Best of luck!

Thanks mischa and danni.

[name]Arlene[/name] was my first choice for the mother and I think I will stick to it. It just fit in general and it fit well with the last name Sweet.

I like [name]Gloria[/name] or [name]Ruby[/name] for the grandmother, but [name]Beverly[/name] was my first thought because of a women that lived a few miles in the road from me when I was growing up. She was a nice women…very motherly…I thought it fit this character.

[name]Carly[/name]'s mum

Of your choices I like [name]Lorraine[/name]
Some Suggestions;

[name]Heather[/name]/[name]Louise[/name]/[name]Laura[/name]/[name]Melissa[/name]/

[name]Carly[/name]'s grandmother

Of your choices I like [name]Ruby[/name]
Some suggestions;

[name]Pearl[/name]/[name]Grace[/name]/[name]Frances[/name] ([name]Frankie[/name])

For the mother, I like [name]Arlene[/name] or [name]Lorraine[/name] the best. I think [name]Sharla[/name], [name]Darlene[/name], or [name]Leanne[/name] also fit.

For the grandmother, [name]Beverly[/name] fits the best. Other suggestions: [name]Betty[/name], [name]Dottie[/name], or [name]Marjorie[/name]

Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions. I’m going to go with [name]Arlene[/name] for the mother.
Now, I can’t decide between [name]Beverly[/name] or [name]Shirley[/name] for the grandmother.

I know you’re settled on the mother already, but I wanted to add in my two cents-- [name]Lorraine[/name] does not strike me as a typical druggy name. [name]Arlene[/name] fits white trash much better, imho.

[name]One[/name] thing I am sure you thought about, but I find pretty relevant in order to help you pick… when does this story take place? When were each of the women born? [name]Arlene[/name] reached it’s peak popularity in the 1930s. I don’t know about how anyone else feels, but I see [name]Arlene[/name] being born anytime before 1960.

I remember reading that [name]Shirley[/name] used to be a boys name, and not very popular before [name]Shirley[/name] [name]Temple[/name] came and changed that around. I just looked it up and it was super popular in the mid-to-late thirties. [name]Beverly[/name] follows a similar trend, though dampened, I think. I vote [name]Shirley[/name] because it goes better with the last name, and does strike me as having a lighter frame than burly [name]Bev[/name].

My story takes place in 2020. The mother was born in the early 70’s…the Grandmother in the mid 40’s. I have put a little thought into names that fit the time, but I believe that people don’t always pick names because they are popular at the time. Sometimes names are picked because they are in the family, or they are liked. Myself and my sisters are perfect examples of this. In the year I was born, my name ranks 246…my younger sister 320, and my other sister 194. That being said, I can move the time frame around.
