3 weeks away, and needing advice... Ada, Ruby, Samara, Lydia?

[name]Hi[/name] all,

[name]Long[/name] story, but the name we decided on for our baby girl (due in 3 weeks) was just taken off the table due to some extended family drama. We are now in crunch time and looking to settle on a name.

Our last name is similar to Presman, and her middle name will be my maiden name, which is similar to Oslin. We’re also Jewish and would love a name with some Hebrew/Jewish connection, but it’s not crucial and not all of our choices fit that bill.

Our contenders are:

[name]Ada[/name] ([name]Love[/name] it for how classic and simple it is, but really don’t like the name [name]Ava[/name], and wonder if ppl will always think that’s her name. Has Hebrew roots.)
[name]Ruby[/name] ([name]Love[/name] it, but wonder if it’s too cutesy and/or too trendy? We live in the [name]Boston[/name] area. Not Jewishly connected per-se, but popular among Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century, so it’s sort of connected.)
[name]Samara[/name] ([name]Simon[/name] was a family name, so there is a connection there. [name]Simone[/name] isn’t a possibility for us, so this would be as close as we could get. This one is Hebrew and means “protected by God”.)
[name]Lydia[/name] ([name]Just[/name] think it’s really pretty, and Liddy is such a cute nickname, but no Hebrew connection.)

Would love any feedback if you have a minute to share.
Thanks in advance!

I think that your front-runner should definitely be [name]Ada[/name]. I’m with you in terms of loving [name]Ada[/name] but not liking [name]Ava[/name]. The strong phonetics of the “d” makes them easy to tell apart, in my opinion. [name]Ada[/name] to me is smart, fun, ageless and full of character. It has my vote!

I really love [name]Ada[/name] or [name]Ruby[/name]!

[name]Ada[/name] or [name]Ruby[/name].

For the reasons you gave for how you’re deciding on a name…I vote for [name]Ada[/name] or [name]Ruby[/name] as well.

I vote for [name]Ada[/name].

I love both [name]Ada[/name] and [name]Lydia[/name]. I think [name]Ada[/name] is very distinguishable from [name]Ava[/name].

[name]Ada[/name] or [name]Ruby[/name]! But I know one [name]Samara[/name] and it is a lovely name too. Good luck! You have some great names.

Definitely [name]Lydia[/name]!

I love [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name]!!

Although I like [name]Ada[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name], I think [name]Samara[/name] or [name]Lydia[/name] would have the best flow with a mn and surname of two-syllables.

Minority here  My vote is for [name]Samara[/name], with [name]Lydia[/name] as a close second.

Thanks for your input, everyone. Still feeling pretty torn, but I’m thinking of taking [name]Samara[/name] out of the running.

What about [name]Adah[/name] with an “h”? Less close to [name]Ava[/name] and has that Jewish cultural connection you are looking for. Adah 1: Bible | Jewish Women’s Archive

I really like [name]Ada[/name] I think its gorgeous and classy. I’m sure a couple people may mistake your daughter as an [name]Ava[/name] though. [name]Ruby[/name] is absolutely gorgeous and I honestly don’t think it will go up much more on the charts. [name]Samara[/name] is my favorite of your list, it’s gorgeous yet spunky and you have a family connection to it. Also, it’s not very popular! [name]Lydia[/name] is one of my favorite names and I feel that it will get very popular soon which is a negative. Good luck!

I really like [name]Lydia[/name].

I like [name]Ada[/name]. [name]Samara[/name] has a nice sound but definitely too The [name]Ring[/name] for me. [name]How[/name] about [name]Amara[/name] or the Arabic (probably? It’s my Egpytian aunt’s name) [name]Samar[/name]?

First choice: [name]Ada[/name]
Second choice: [name]Lydia[/name]

But I love them both

I vote [name]Samara[/name]! [name]Love[/name] the meaning and the sound, family connection is a bonus!

I like [name]Ada[/name] Definitely distinguishable from [name]Ava[/name]. I love it.
