[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone !
I am [name_u]French[/name_u] and my partner is Australian. I feel like because of the difference of prononciation we almost never like the same names or always love it in [name_f]English[/name_f] but hate it in [name_u]French[/name_u] and vice versa
[name_f]My[/name_f] partner LOVES the name [name_u]Harlan[/name_u]. Itâs been his favorite since day 1 and would love a little [name_u]Harlan[/name_u] [name_u]Ridge[/name_u]. (Last name starts and finishes like this: TRâŠIN).
I like [name_u]Harlan[/name_u] in [name_f]English[/name_f] but not in French⊠and feel like [name_u]Harlan[/name_u] [name_u]Ridge[/name_u] sounds very [name_f]English[/name_f] with no French/European roots which makes me a little sad.
The only name we both like in [name_f]English[/name_f] and [name_u]French[/name_u] is [name_m]Bastien[/name_m], maybe [name_m]Bastien[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. This name has a European vibe I like, but is still known in [name_f]English[/name_f] too.
We kind of like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] too.
We would like a strong name, but not macho, maybe with some adventurous/artsy feel.
We donât want any names in the Top 10 (we really like Lucas/Luka/Luca but there are so many, we would prefer a more unique name)
So donât hesitate to let us know about how those names make you feel, or if you have different names ideas, please go for it
Would you be open you using a [name_u]French[/name_u] middle name for [name_u]Harlan[/name_u]? I donât really know any [name_u]French[/name_u] names, but something like [name_u]Harlan[/name_u] [name_m]Bastien[/name_m]. Iâm not sure that would be as [name_u]French[/name_u] as you would like it, but that was just my thought reading your post
Thank you! We wonât use [name_m]Bastien[/name_m] and [name_u]Harlan[/name_u] as a combo, just in case we have another boy and might want to use it as a first name for him.
So many names on your list have been seriously considered through our name choice process ahhaha [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Nathan[/name_m], [name_m]Victor[/name_m], [name_m]Mathis[/name_m], [name_u]Leon[/name_u] to just name a few.
I am glad everyone here likes [name_m]Bastien[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], itâs growing on me.
I think [name_m]Bastien[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] is our top 1 at the moment, but wow [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_u]Luca[/name_u] really is beautiful too!! It looks like we wonât be deciding until he is born and I like having 2-3 options we love before that. Thank you so much.
Congratulations on your baby!
Iâm not [name_u]French[/name_u] but I am an Aussie so these are a few names listed as with a french background that as an Aussie I find acessable so maybe they may appeal:
[name_m]Deveraux[/name_m]
I think this is very handsome and would work so well in either first or middle spot
For example [name_u]Harlan[/name_u] [name_m]Deveraux[/name_m] [name_u]Ridge[/name_u] or [name_m]Deveraux[/name_m] [name_u]Harlan[/name_u]
Not sure where youâll be living but if you end up in Australia you will get a nickname so [name_u]Ever[/name_u] is a cool one for [name_m]Deveraux[/name_m] or Banks/ [name_f]Banksy[/name_f] or [name_u]River[/name_u] if you go off the meaningâŠ
Some other options:
[name_u]Leon[/name_u]
[name_u]Beau[/name_u]
[name_m]Quinten[/name_m]
Sully/ [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] (not super [name_u]French[/name_u] but cool)
[name_u]Andre[/name_u]
Yes! If we use [name_u]Harlan[/name_u] as a first name I think we would end up giving [name_u]Ridge[/name_u] up, for a more [name_u]French[/name_u] middle name. Trying to keep everyone happy ahaha
As an Aussie Francophile, here are some assorted thoughts:
I feel like DH should probably take Harlan Ridge off the list or at least to the bottom - because English Hâs and Râs are notoriously difficult / different for French speakers. I also think itâs too âwordyâ as Harlan means âby the boundaryâ/ârocky landâ so it feels like a repeat name and perhaps too descriptive (rocky ridge). But I do like Harlan.
I love Bastien or else Sebastian/Sebastien - itâs a strong name in both contexts. One option might be Bastian (with two Aâs) because it has the second meaning, an outdoorsy one of fortification and stronghold and associated with coastlines. Great nn options (important in Australia) like (Seb), Bashy, Bass.
I do like Caspian and this might be a good compromise because itâs closer to Harlan. Caspian has cool nn options too (Cas, Kip, Cap). I think, though, I prefer Harlan - or Casper/Casper or Jasper for that matter - to Caspian. Could any of these be options?
I love the name Alexander (as a middle for Harlan, Caspian or Bastien).
Here are some other Aussie-French-friendly names:
Harvey Ridge
Remy Everest
Gaston Brooks
Claude Harlan
Enzo Alexander
Henley Bramble
Leon Valentine
Kai Florian
Aurelio Cove
Jude Sylvain
Emrys Landry
Or if really want Harlan, Harlan Alexandre to keep French connection?
I agree with another user, that combining your top choice with your partners.
[name_m]Bastien[/name_m] [name_u]Harlan[/name_u]
[name_u]Harlan[/name_u] [name_m]Bastien[/name_m]
[name_m]Bastien[/name_m] [name_u]Ridge[/name_u]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_u]Harlan[/name_u]
[name_u]Harlan[/name_u] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_u]Ridge[/name_u]
I think they all sound lovely and have both the âAmericanâ and European/French vibe. Good luck!
That is an amazing analysis and such great tips thank you so much. Very helpful!! DH likes [name_m]Bastien[/name_m] for that reason (good nicknames options) which I didnât think was a big deal, but now that I am living in Australia I realise it is !! Ahahha
[name_u]Love[/name_u] some of your name combos I will have to go through them with my partner.
Thank you!!!
Harlan has to go, it doesnât work in French. Bastian is a good option with many possible nicknames as noted above. Particularly if you live in Victoria, Victor is a great suggestion (first or middle), though Vincent may be even better for a French background? Beautiful name. I also love the French saint name Blaise, though less familiar in Australia. Other suggestions: Bernard (some similar sounds to Harlan but French and classier), Clement, Xavier (mainstream in Australia but still has flair, more distinctive than Alexander).
Victor/Vincent Blaise
Bastian Xavier/Victor
Xavier Blaise/Ridge/Vincent
Bernard Ridge/Xavier
