37 Weeks... Please help :-)

We are expecting our first girl after two boys, and we’re having a hard time naming her. We had both of our boys named much earlier, so this is a new experience for us.

Our current short list is:

[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] (probably my favorite, but I would want to call her [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], and I’m afraid my husband would end up calling her [name_f]Roz[/name_f], which I don’t really like)
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Marie[/name_f]

Other names that were on my list that have been either shot down or just didn’t make it to the short list:

[name_f]Clarissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (this one has a chance of moving up to the short list)
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_u]Joan[/name_u]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Judith[/name_f] (also a chance on the short list)
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] (probably my favorite, but DH said no)
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Thora[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]

I like the names on our short list, but I’m not in love with any of them. I’m just hoping there’s some magical name out there that I’m missing that we’ll both instantly agree on.

Our boys are [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m], and we’d like to avoid A and W names, but I’m willing to relax that for the perfect name.

Both of our boys have family middle names, but we don’t have anything we love for this little one. There’s a chance we use [name_f]Rose[/name_f] for a middle if it isn’t part of the first. I know it’s over used, but we have a ton of Roses in our family, so it works for us.

Thank you if you made it this far! I need this baby named soon! lol

I love [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], too, so it’s a shame he shot it down. Did you pass [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] by him? He went for [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], so he doesn’t hate all [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names, maybe he’ll like that one! The reason I suggest this is that I feel [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] lends itself to [name_f]Roz[/name_f] much more than [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] plain [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is wonderful, too, and not so commonly used as a first name.

Other suggestions:

[name_f]Flora[/name_f] (could be a nn for [name_f]Florence[/name_f], too, which is on your list)
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]

Good luck!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f] (pronounced Roh-zuh-linn) to avoid the [name_f]Roz[/name_f] nickname? And since [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] didn’t make it to the short list but [name_f]Marie[/name_f] did, how about [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]? If you aren’t quite in love with [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], how about switching it around with [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]?

Congratulations!

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m] are adorable names. I think [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] goes best with them and I love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (that gets my vote!). [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] is beautiful too. From your list I think [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Thora[/name_f] go best with the siblings, but really they’re all lovely!

Congrats!

I love your name list, your long list has so many crossovers with my long list, I thought maybe I’d just share some more of my list, and maybe you’ll find something there you love.

[name_f]Amity[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabry[/name_f]
[name_f]Blanche[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudette[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Nellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Cicely[/name_f]
[name_f]Coral[/name_f]
[name_f]Dinah[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Maris[/name_f]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]
[name_f]Dolores[/name_f]
[name_f]Glinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Lynette[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_u]Robin[/name_u]
[name_f]Wilma[/name_f]

Best wishes. And even if you’re “stuck” with one on your current short list, they’re all so adorable, I’m sure you’ll love it once it’s attached to your new baby.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the suggestions of changing the [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] to [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]. But a pp suggestion of [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] gets my vote.

Thank you so much for all of the feedback!

I also prefer the other [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names like [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] over [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], but unfortunately, the only reason my husband agrees to [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] is because he likes the scientist [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m]. All of the other [name_f]Rose[/name_f] names have been a no go. I do really like [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], but the whole [name_f]Roz[/name_f] thing makes me hesitant.

I’ve never thought of [name_f]Flora[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Florence[/name_f]!

I love your whole list. [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Cora[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] are all names of friends which is why they didn’t end up making my list in the beginning.

I’ll have to run [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] past my husband!

Thank you!

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is adorable. I don’t think I’ve ever said them together before. I really like the nn [name_f]Dottie[/name_f].

Aaaaanndddd I just remembered that out last name starts with a D. Augh. [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] sounds OK with it, kind of… But [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] Last name is a tonge twister for sure. Dang it! lol

Thank you for sharing your list! I had [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] on my list forever, but I took it off because it started with W like [name_m]Walter[/name_m]. It’s adorable though.

I’m going to have to run [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] by my husband!

I tried to convince my husband on [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] last week, but I’m going to have to have another go at it.

I love:

[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]

Suggestions:
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]

Warmest congratulations, @qwill328!

You’ve done an outstanding job naming your sons. [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m] is, to me, an ideal pair.

Clunky-cool old man is one way of describing these endearing vintage names.

Girl names you’ve considered that are particularly good stylistic matches: [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f].

Additional suggestions for you:

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m] {and}

[name_f]Agatha[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Eudora[/name_f], [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Philomena[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]

{“The [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Name [name_m]Wizard[/name_m]” book / “ladies and gentlemen” names}

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m] and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m] and [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m] and [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
(I like the “he-lay-na” pronunciation)

I particularly love [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] with your boy’s names.

these happen to be names from our family tree that I love, but I think they’d work for you.

I love [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] and it sounds like you do too - and as an added bonus your husband not only likes it but also for a really cool reason! What a great namesake for a daughter! I feel like you’re letting a minor concern make you overlook the perfect name when it’s staring you in the face. Have you told your husband that you really don’t like [name_f]Roz[/name_f]? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think he would still insist on calling her that if he knew how you felt? If you just call her [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] from the beginning, I don’t see that [name_f]Roz[/name_f] would even have to be an option.

I love [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] on its own! I know so many kids these days called [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f] and they aren’t short for anything.

I also like [name_f]Grace[/name_f] & [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] with your boys names.

This might be a bit late, but you could pronounce [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] as rose-uh-lind rather than roz-ah-lind, as I have done for [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], etc. because I dislike the harsh roz sound. I don’t think it’s technically correct but it’s the sort of variation you’d get with different accents, and some people pronounce it like that anyway (I think). It would mean that [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] would be a lot more intuitive.

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is stunning and such a good match stylistically for [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m]!
[name_f]Dottie[/name_f] is a cute nickname, but if that’s going to cause problems with your surname some other less common nicknames for [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] are [name_f]Dodie[/name_f], [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], [name_u]Dory[/name_u] or [name_f]Thea[/name_f]. Though, to be honest, I quite like [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] as a stand alone name without nicknames, it’s so beautiful and strong and would grow really easily as well.
Eurgh, [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] just seems so perfect for me!

I like [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] the best off of your top 3. Im surprised he didn’t like [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]. What about [name_f]Roselyn[/name_f]? (Or [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f] phonetically). Its right in between [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]. You could spell it with an i instead of y if you want it even more similar to [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]. You can’t go wrong with any of these! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.
