38 weeks pregnant, no name yet, HELP!

I’ve posted on here a few times before…my husband & I are really struggling with choosing a name but we’re running out of time!

So far, our “top” names we’re considering are

[name]Elliot[/name] [name]John[/name]
[name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name]
[name]Rocco[/name] ?

with “maybes” for [name]Franklin[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name] the NN [name]Frankie[/name]) and [name]Owen[/name].
The hub used to love [name]Calvin[/name] as well but I can’t get past the name meaning (little bald one, eek!).
I love [name]Henry[/name], but it’s been totally vetoed. :frowning:

Our last name is [name]Laura[/name], which makes things tough. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Rocco[/name], but I’m afraid I’m going to regret it later for being too uncommon or polarizing with our families, who can be pretty judgmental and vocal when they hate something.

[name]John[/name] is top of the list because it’s a HUGE family name for my husband’s side–I’m talking both grandparents, uncle, dad, cousins. My husband likes the idea of a family connection, so we were toying with “[name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name]” (our 2 favorite grandfather’s names, one from my side & one from his). However, I’m scared that’s [name]WAY[/name] too many “Johns” in the family already, and we’re more of a quirky couple, so that’s pretty common for us.

I like [name]Rocco[/name] because it’s what my husband was going to originally be named until his mom changed her mind at the last minute, so it has some history/significance. We also would need a MN for [name]Rocco[/name]–I’d love to keep a family/meaning connection going there, I was toying with:
[name]Rocco[/name] [name]Jonathan[/name] (DH doesn’t love, but I think [name]Rocco[/name] [name]John[/name] sounds a little odd and this balances it out more)
[name]Rocco[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] (his sister is [name]Alexandra[/name])
[name]Rocco[/name] [name]Christopher[/name] (best childhood friend who died young)

There’s also a big chance he’s going to be chubby–my husband & I were both chubby kids lol–is [name]Rocco[/name] a mean choice for a chubby little guy?

Thoughts? Any favorites or definite “no ways” stand out? We need to decide soon!

Have you considered [name]Frank[/name] “[name]Frankie[/name]”? I have a little cousin who’s in preschool right now named [name]Frank[/name], but we call “[name]Frankie[/name]”. It suits him perfectly!

[name]Elliot[/name] [name]John[/name] - I prefer the spelling [name]Elliott[/name]. IMOH, I don’t think this is a very memorable name; but maybe that’s because I don’t see anything special with [name]Elliot[/name].

[name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name] - [name]Love[/name] how much family significance this name has, but I don’t think it has the best flow.

[name]Rocco[/name] ? - I think [name]Rocco[/name] is fine; the kid makes the name, not the other way around! I honestly think that [name]Jonathan[/name] [name]Rocco[/name] is a cool sounding name and flows much better than [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Jonathan[/name]. [name]Frank[/name] [name]Rocco[/name], I think, has a very striking sound that’s refreshing. The only name combo for [name]Rocco[/name] you have that I like is [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]. Maybe it’s just me, but to my ears, [name]Rocco[/name] sounds much better in the middle name position.

My favorites are [name]Jonathan[/name] [name]Rocco[/name] and [name]Frank[/name] [name]Rocco[/name].

Good [name]Luck[/name]!

I like all your options! For [name]Rocco[/name], I like [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]. I actually think [name]Rocco[/name] would be really cute for a chubby kid, but I could be missing something?

[name]Elliot[/name] was my favorite until I read your full post, but now I really like the significance of [name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name]! He could go by [name]Cyril[/name] or [name]Cy[/name], or even something like [name]Jack[/name] or JC or [name]Johnny[/name]… Or you could do [name]Cyril[/name] [name]John[/name]? I honestly like [name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name] more, though.

I really love [name]Elliot[/name] [name]John[/name] (or [name]Elliot[/name] [name]Cyril[/name]?), too! [name]Elliot[/name] or [name]John[/name] would get my first choice, I think.

Good luck!

I wouldn’t do [name]Elliott[/name] [name]John[/name] – wayyy too close to [name]Elton[/name] [name]John[/name].

[name]Rocco[/name] is super cute. I like [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Alexander[/name].

I must admit I thought “[name]Elton[/name] [name]John[/name]” as soon as I saw [name]Elliot[/name] [name]John[/name] as well, though [name]Elliot[/name] is a nice name.

My Dad is named [name]Cyril[/name] (after his Dad) and he HATES it so that has kind of coloured the name for me unfortunately. He goes by [name]Cy[/name] which I do like and actually I think [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Cy[/name] and [name]Elliot[/name] [name]Cy[/name] sound nice.

[name]John[/name] is too boring/plain for me (sorry, I don’t mean to offend!) so wouldn’t use that one.

I like [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] though not sure it flows with your surname - I wonder if a one syllable middle name would work better?

[name]Franklin[/name] and [name]Owen[/name] are cool, I think they would be my favourites from your list.

Boys names are so hard! I really love [name]Henry[/name] too so I’m sorry you can’t use it.

From your list, I’d choose [name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name], [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] or [name]Owen[/name]. What struck me about [name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name], though, besides the family significance, was the combination. I think if I chose this name I’d call him by the double name, [name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name], not [name]John[/name], [name]Johnny[/name] or [name]Cy[/name]. That’s weird, because I’ve never been a fan of the name [name]Cyril[/name], but I really like that combo. If calling him “[name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name]” isn’t your cup of tea, my vote would probably go to [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] or to [name]Owen[/name]. [name]Owen[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]? [name]Owen[/name] [name]Frank[/name]? [name]Owen[/name] [name]Elliot[/name]?
Congratulations and best wishes!

From your list I like [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Owen[/name] & [name]Franklin[/name] best.

Although I think if you’re going with [name]John[/name] it sounds best in the first name position ([name]John[/name] [name]Elliot[/name] [name]Laura[/name], [name]John[/name] [name]Franklin[/name], etc.)

I’m sorry but not loving [name]Rocco[/name], I can’t picture it on a baby (hey there’s a reason they decided not to name your hubby that!)

Good luck.

 [name]Cris[/name]

I like [name]Rocco[/name] and [name]Frank[/name]/lin/ie best. They are fresh and masculine but would also be sweet on a baby. I’m not quite sure how I’d feel meeting a grown-up [name]Rocco[/name], but since I’ve always liked the name [name]Roc[/name], I think it would just pass the ageing test.
[name]Elliot[/name] is a very nice name too, the only down side I can see is that it’s just a bit more common. A sound choice.
[name]John[/name] is too normal and common for my taste, but would work fine as a middle name. I think it’s lovely to use family names if they are important to you. I don’t like the sounds in [name]Cyril[/name] or [name]Owen[/name] - but that’s just me!

Good luck!

Naming is so tough! I was thinking [name]John[/name] [name]Rocco[/name] might be cute, with the option to use [name]Rocco[/name] for his nn, to ease how common [name]John[/name] is but to also give him the option of [name]John[/name] as he gets older…though I’m sad to give up the significance of [name]Cyril[/name]. Thank GOD you berries pointed out the [name]Elliot[/name]/[name]Elton[/name] similarity…I never even connected [name]Elliot[/name] [name]John[/name] with [name]Elton[/name] [name]John[/name], maybe that’s why it sounded “flowy” to me! That would have been horrible!

Because your last name is [name]Laura[/name], I would eliminate [name]Elliot[/name], as it is just as common as a last name as a first name, and I’d hate for your son to be called [name]Laura[/name] [name]Elliot[/name] before they get to know him or his real name. People do mix these things up, a friend has a son in a similar situation and he is almost always called by last-name, first-name at doctors, etc. This is coming from someone with the last name [name]Will[/name], so I know it can be hard to find the right combo.

I really like [name]John[/name]. It’s a classic masculine name that is strong enough to stand with your last name and signify a boy definitively. My first son is named [name]John[/name], and we have never met another little [name]John[/name] around his age, so it is not as popular or common as it might appear. Combined with your family history, it sounds like a winner! Though I wouldn’t worry too much about naming the baby after his great-grandfather, the generational gap is wide enough that people will know who you’re talking about. Again, biased because my [name]John[/name] was named after my grandfather.

I think [name]John[/name] might be it, too…I haven’t found anything we like better and the significance is important to us.
However, just to make things complicated… it wouldn’t be just naming him after his great-grandpa…My husband’s dad is [name]John[/name], he has an Uncle [name]Jack[/name], cousin [name]Johnny[/name], and [name]BOTH[/name] grandpas are “Johns”. Is that too many Johns in the family already?

You sound like you really like [name]Rocco[/name] - I would say go for it! [name]Rocco[/name] [name]Elliott[/name] has a cool ring to it. I really do like the name [name]Frank[/name], as a nn for [name]Franklin[/name] or even by itself (or as a nn for [name]Francis[/name]? I have always thought [name]Francis[/name] nn [name]Frank[/name] would be awesome! Is that so uncool it’s cool again, yet?), but [name]Frankie[/name] seems like it would be cute for a little boy, but not so much for when he’s older. Also, [name]John[/name] [name]Cyril[/name] sounds really cool, since the names seem to balance each other out (traditional vs. eccentric), and it’s nice that they hold meaning for you, but I understand if [name]John[/name] is not your “style”. Have you considered using an alternate form of [name]John[/name] to still honor? [name]Sean[/name], [name]Ian[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Johnny[/name] (love!), [name]Jones[/name], [name]Evan[/name], [name]Gian[/name]? Good luck!

You could always do a middle initial that goes with J to make an initial name, like J.D. or J.P, just in case you decide there needs to be a way to differentiate him from other Johns. I considered the “[name]John[/name]” derivatives like the previous poster recommended. It’s a good idea, I just didn’t want to because using my grandpa’s actual name was more important. But I can see where that might be a good possibility for you!
