39 weeks - help!

[name]Baby[/name] #1 is due next week, and husband and I have still not decided on a name. It’s not because of a strong disagreement between our styles - we just haven’t fallen in love yet and don’t want to compromise. I’m hoping you guys can help give some input on the boys names we’re working with so far, or maybe suggest some other ones that might fit.

We don’t know the sex of the baby. If it’s a girl, her name will be [name]Julia[/name] [name]Grace[/name] (fn just because, middle name is the same).
Our last name (not actual spelling to avoid Google  ) is pronounced [name]Bart[/name]-co-ee-ak

Main considerations for boys names are:

  1. Obvious spelling/pronounciation (our last name trips people up)
  2. Not too trendy. Meaning we’d like for it to have some grounding in the past, not just a recently invented name.
  3. Not too unusual. As you’ll see from our list, we like some very popular names (classics) and some just slightly more unusual names. [name]Both[/name] are ok.
  4. Gender specific and masculine

Boy names we’re considering:

[name]Jude[/name] - We like the sound, and the biblical connection. [name]Just[/name] unique enough, and the short spelling would work with our last name. Husband’s hangups are: wondering if the ‘d’ sound won’t come through and people will think we’re saying “Jew” or will be teased w/ Jew or [name]Judy[/name] nickname).

[name]William[/name] (nn [name]Will[/name] or possibly [name]Liam[/name]) - We like some historical connections, and the name is obviously a classic for a reason. hangups - too common/ordinary?

[name]Owen[/name] - For this one, we pretty much just like the sound. Hangups - no real ‘meaning’ behind the name to us. Is this going to become a super popular name? Does this name work on a 50 year old?

We’re plenty open to other suggestions, but right now these are our top 3. HELP! We’re really down to the wire : )

Thanks!

I like the 3 you have listed, but my first thought was maybe a masculine version with a similar sound to your girl choice: [name]Julian[/name] [name]Gray[/name]

[name]Julius[/name] is a great name. I really like [name]Jude[/name], or what about [name]Josiah[/name]? I’ve been fond of every [name]Josiah[/name] I’ve ever known. [name]Levi[/name] is an alternative to [name]Liam[/name]. [name]Sterling[/name] has been a favorite of mine recently, which has a different kind of feel. [name]Seth[/name] is Biblical and fairly uncommon right now.

I like [name]Jude[/name] and [name]Will[/name] a lot. Maybe [name]Graham[/name], [name]Collin[/name], [name]Luke[/name], [name]Dean[/name], or [name]Evan[/name]?

Good luck!!

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I don’t love [name]Josiah[/name] - but the others are worth considering. I think I’m drawn to the shorter names - [name]Jude[/name], [name]Will[/name], [name]Evan[/name], [name]Ross[/name]…

Throwing a curve ball in there…what about [name]Todd[/name]? Is that totally dated? I never hear it.

*[name]Todd[/name] is definitely a 1970s name… but it’s cute. He would have to deal with constantly being called “toad” though, because that’s what we did as kids to the [name]Todd[/name] in our class
*For [name]Jude[/name], I think that he would more likely have to contend with people singing “hey [name]Jude[/name]” all the time, rather than people hearing “Jew”, since [name]Jude[/name] is known well-enough. I like the meaning of [name]Jude[/name] & it’s Biblical association.
*[name]William[/name] was on our list for our baby boy (who was born in Sept), and may resurface for the next baby if there is another boy. There are so many great [name]Williams[/name] in history and for me, it’s also a family name on my side and DH’s side. It’s quite common, and yet, I only know 2 little [name]Williams[/name] & 1 baby with [name]William[/name] as a mn-and since they live in separate cities, and are different ages, they won’t end up in the same class.
*[name]Owen[/name] is a classic, I think. I only know 1 [name]Owen[/name] personally and he is in grade 2 right now. However, I also think that [name]Owen[/name] ages well. It will work as well for a child as for a middle aged or elderly man.

Since you like short, classic names, how about these:
[name]Joel[/name] -Biblical connection, great meaning, not too common, yet well known
[name]Hugo[/name] -up and coming name, super cute for a baby, but ages well, great meaning (and I like the movie of the same name)
[name]Leo[/name] -have to mention this one, just because it’s my DH’s name and seems so popular here on NB! meaning = lion, the name is cute and spunky, works for adults too. If it seems a bit nicknamey, you can use [name]Leonardo[/name], [name]Leonard[/name], [name]Leon[/name] with nn [name]Leo[/name]. I also recently met a baby named [name]Lionel[/name] which is in the same vein as [name]Leo[/name] but much more unique.
[name]Miles[/name] -great meaning, works for baby and adult,
[name]Bram[/name] -I’m mentioning this name partly because I just read another thread about the name and it struck me as cute and spunky yet masculine & strong.

btw you don’t HAVE to have a name picked out before you give birth. You could bring a list with you and see which one best suits baby after you meet him/her. A name might just stick as soon as you see him. You have time to figure out a name, even after he’s born. You don’t have to rush.

What a cute idea. I love the name [name]Julian[/name] and was going to suggest it as well.
You could also consider a different virtue name as a mn for a boy: [name]Prosper[/name], Merit or [name]Valor[/name] for example.

Other first name suggestions: [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Dennis[/name], [name]Daniel[/name], or [name]Michael[/name]

[name]How[/name] about [name]Judah[/name] nn [name]Jude[/name]?

There’s also
[name]Luke[/name] or [name]Luca[/name]
[name]Cade[/name]
[name]Knox[/name]
[name]Graham[/name]
[name]Grant[/name]
[name]Finn[/name]
[name]Abram[/name]

I like your list, we may have similar taste. Some others on my list include [name]Elliot[/name], [name]Grant[/name], [name]Logan[/name], [name]Hugh[/name], [name]Miles[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]James[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name].

I think we do have similar taste! Almost all of those names have been considered. [name]James[/name], [name]Elliot[/name], and [name]Grant[/name] probably top the lst - but I like them all

[name]Owen[/name] is my favorite from your list. I really adore that name.

You might also like [name]Toby[/name] and [name]Anton[/name].

I think you have some lovely choices and can’t really go wrong. [name]Just[/name] something to consider though: If you use [name]Jude[/name] (or another J name now), how would you feel about using [name]Julia[/name] in the future?

[name]Jude[/name] is one of my favourite boy’s names so I’m a fan of this and I think it will sound fine with your last name too. [name]Jude[/name] is common enough now to not cause any major problems.

I much prefer [name]William[/name] as a middle name because of how traditional it is. It’s a classic and sounds good with your last name.

I don’t like [name]Owen[/name] at all, don’t understand it’s popularity.

Other ideas…
[name]Rhys[/name]
[name]Adam[/name]
[name]Joel[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Asher[/name]
[name]Finn[/name]/[name]Flynn[/name]
[name]West[/name]
[name]Luke[/name]
[name]Evan[/name]
[name]Troy[/name]
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Chester[/name]
[name]George[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name]

I kind of feel like “dated” names aren’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s a name that people are already familiar with but he won’t have to deal with a ton of kids his age sharing the name. If a name was the big thing 10 years ago, I could see people assuming he was from that age group (once he’s an adult), but no one’s going to assume at any point in his life that he’s 40 years older than he is. I’m not personally a big fan of the name [name]Todd[/name], but I don’t think a name’s association with a previous generation should automatically rule it out.

I like [name]William[/name] the most on your list! [name]Owen[/name] is very very popular where I live and seems extremely overused. [name]Jude[/name] isn’t my cup of tea.

Because your last name seems to be a mouthful I would stick with something short and well known. Maybe [name]Adam[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Andrew[/name], [name]Elijah[/name], [name]Eli[/name]?

[name]Just[/name] a note on [name]Jude[/name], I have yet to have a problem with enunciating the ‘d’. [name]Even[/name] with a cold, it’s not as bad as you’d think. That being said, I love [name]Jude[/name] (I am biased!). I also love [name]William[/name]/[name]Will[/name]. Someone suggested [name]Theodore[/name], so maybe [name]Theo[/name] would be nice as well. Also, you brought up [name]Todd[/name], what about [name]Ted[/name]/[name]Teddy[/name]? [name]Just[/name] some thoughts.
