4. Do the names work together?

Genre of [name_u]Story[/name_u]: Sci-Fi/[name_f]Fantasy[/name_f]

Time Period/Location: several centuries in the future/ the world

Brief Plot: The plot revolves around four main characters and their involvement with each other. Three of the four are parts of different groups that are all working towards different goals, which causes conflicts, and the fourth is basically the one who gets tied up in it all. There are mutants that are called freaks and all three of the groups are all gunning for this one freak for various reasons. It transpires globally and various countries have various naming styles. Also everyone speaks English as their first language due to a past war and the installment of a world government in charge of all 13 countries.

What I’d Like: Please tell me if: the names fit or don’t, male or female, fn/ln combo doesn’t work, impressions of personalities, name pronunciation, surname suggestion, and anything else you’d like to add.

Anything else?: All reviews are helpful and welcome, you only have to do the names you’d like to but the more the merrier. Nicknamed will be in “nn”.

If each country has different naming styles, could you separate them into country groups? It’d be easier to spot any anomalies then. Me telling you that Michaelangelo and [name_u]Salmon[/name_u] make no sense in a group isn’t going to help you if you already know that.

Sorry about that! I’ve split them up by country now:

[name_f]Kala[/name_f] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
[name_m]Uriel[/name_m] Griffith
[name_f]Riya[/name_f] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
Inari
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Vali[/name_f]

(to explain, this country uses color names)
[name_u]Salmon[/name_u] “[name_u]Sam[/name_u]”
[name_m]Denim[/name_m] “[name_m]Nim[/name_m]”
Zaffre
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]

[name_f]Kala[/name_f] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
[name_m]Uriel[/name_m] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
[name_f]Riya[/name_f] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
Inari
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Vali[/name_f]

Of this particular group [name_f]Verity[/name_f] really stands out. It feels very English compared to the others. And [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] is a Welsh surname. To replace them I feel something like Ghannam (middle eastern surname) and Verora (just pulled it out of thin air).

[name_f]Talia[/name_f]
Beckminster [name_m]Law[/name_m]

Not sure how I feel about Beckminster (made up, obscure) with [name_f]Talia[/name_f] (real name, more well known).

(to explain, this country uses color names)
[name_u]Salmon[/name_u] “[name_u]Sam[/name_u]”
[name_m]Denim[/name_m] “[name_m]Nim[/name_m]”
Zaffre
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]

Are Zaffre and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] colours?

I chose [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] because that family was born in the future UK; their mother is from the middle east and their father from the UK. But yeah, it felt a little off so I may have to change the surname.

Beckminster and [name_f]Talia[/name_f] are both future cities and the country they are from names people after places both past and present. Beckminster is a name I made up from [name_m]Buckminster[/name_m] and [name_u]Beck[/name_u]'s beer because he (the character) runs a company that produces alcohol.

Zaffre and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] are both shades of blue. Their official names are zaffre blue and maya blue but I feel the blue part is repetitive.

Thank you so much for your input!

[name_f]Kala[/name_f] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
[name_m]Uriel[/name_m] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
[name_f]Riya[/name_f] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
Inari
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Vali[/name_f]

From the above set, I fine [name_f]Verity[/name_f] really out of place, like renrose. [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] is also weird with those sorts of first names. Something more Indianish?

[name_u]Tate[/name_u] Arai
[name_u]Frost[/name_u] Arai

These work fine together for me. They’re both short, sort of hard names.

[name_f]Althea[/name_f]
[name_f]Shaka[/name_f]
Konan MacNamara
[name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] “[name_f]Lore[/name_f]”
[name_m]Zair[/name_m]/[name_m]Ryker[/name_m] [name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_m]Donovan[/name_m] MacNamara
[name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_m]Cassian[/name_m]
[name_m]Keiran[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]

I find these sort of all over the place. You have Irish, [name_m]Roman[/name_m], Greek, common, uncommon. Things like [name_f]Shaka[/name_f] and Konan next to [name_u]Blake[/name_u] and [name_m]Donovan[/name_m]. What’s the naming thing for this country?

[name_f]Talia[/name_f]
Beckminster [name_m]Law[/name_m]

These are really weird and different together. [name_f]Talia[/name_f] is established and a pretty normal name. Beckminster is a made up name [name_m]WAY[/name_m] different in sound than [name_f]Talia[/name_f]. If it was like Beckminster and [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] I would have got the place names thing, or Beckminster and [insert made up name] I would have thought they were all invented. I wouldn’t get it with these two. I do find Beckminster pretty intriguing though.

[name_m]Hadrian[/name_m]
[name_m]Michelangelo[/name_m] “[name_m]Milo[/name_m]/[name_m]Angelo[/name_m]” [name_m]Brandt[/name_m]

These are ok together. They’re a little mismatched but they feel like both historical names so it’s good.

[name_f]Acacia[/name_f]

[name_m]Helio[/name_m] Colada

[name_m]Njord[/name_m] Skytte

[name_f]Jemma[/name_f]

[name_m]Axel[/name_m]
[name_f]Arella[/name_f]

These also sound good together.

What’s the thing here? This seems like made up name (though it might not be) and misspelled word name.

(to explain, this country uses color names)
[name_u]Salmon[/name_u] “[name_u]Sam[/name_u]”
[name_m]Denim[/name_m] “[name_m]Nim[/name_m]”
Zaffre
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]

I would never have gotten color. I saw fish, fabric, made up, established name. Maybe if you want color names go with ones that are a little more recognizable as colors? [name_f]Azure[/name_f], [name_u]Salmon[/name_u], [name_u]Burgundy[/name_u], [name_f]Magenta[/name_f] like that. Or to stick with your own letters there, [name_m]Denim[/name_m], [name_f]Magenta[/name_f]/[name_f]Mauve[/name_f]/[name_f]Midori[/name_f], [name_f]Saffron[/name_f]/[name_u]Salmon[/name_u]/Sepia/[name_u]Silver[/name_u], Zaffre. Throw some in there that are obviously colors so when you come across Zaffre, you get it’s a color.

Also, just cause, you might like [name_f]Vermilion[/name_f] and [name_f]Xanthene[/name_f] for your color names.

All in all, I like most of the names on here whether they go together perfectly or not

I always make sure to use a diverse set of names in my books, because you have to remember that every character was named by their own parents and their parents very likely had different naming styles. Some characters could have moved from another state/country and so they would have a different type of name.

Thank you mfberry and dantea!

To explain as best as I can: the first set is for British/[name_f]Indian[/name_f]/Middle Eastern names and the reason why [name_f]Verity[/name_f]'s name is so out of place is because she is younger and her parents originally weren’t from the country she was born in. The country for the third set (the wide array one) names their children after their inspirations and what the child reminds them of upon birth. So [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], meaning powerful, was named that because he cried a lot and had an intense set of lungs for a newborn. [name_m]Donovan[/name_m] has dark hair and so does his brother, [name_m]Keiran[/name_m], and both of their names mean dark.

For the color ones, there are going to be a lot more characters from there but I don’t want there to be hundreds of super standard color names. There will be lots of obvious color names and several of the characters comment on how basically everyone has a color name.

Again thank you all so much!
