48hrs Until...Felicity? Bridget? Beatrice? Miranda? Cordelia? HELP!

Right, whenever we try to decide on a name we end up adding to the list rather than narrowing it down. The baby is being delivered on 1st February so we need to make our minds up! Our taste runs towards:

  • Saints’ names
  • Irish names non-Irish people can spell and pronounce
  • Shakepearean names

Older sister is [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Eilish[/name] [name]Madeline[/name] and the current front runners are:

[name]Bridget[/name] - [name]Will[/name] it remind me too much of an annoying relative?
[name]Felicity[/name] - too popular in British middle class circles? Is is the new [name]Florence[/name]?
[name]Beatrice[/name] - too popular in British middle class circles? Is is the new [name]Florence[/name]?
[name]Miranda[/name] - Has Sex and the City ruined it?
[name]Cordelia[/name] - I love it but have started to worry that it sounds like Cordial (I am very hormonal…)

Thanks for your help!

I think you should name your daughter [name]Mavis[/name], [name]Maude[/name], or [name]Marlowe[/name] based off older sister [name]Agnes[/name]. These three instantly popped into my head as a perfect match that is sophisticated and beautiful. Good luck!

I like [name]Felicity[/name]! I think it’s a great name for a little girl as well as a grown woman! I definitely think its a name that “ages” well. Have any middle names?

I think [name]Beatrice[/name] sounds lovely with [name]Agnes[/name]. As for popularity… yeah, [name]Bea[/name] is pop in the (upper) middle class. But the u.m.c has pretty nice taste, I think… [name]Will[/name] it get as pop as [name]Florence[/name]? Maybe, but I don’t think so.

I also love [name]Miranda[/name], she was very cool in The [name]Tempest[/name] (and I like Sex and the City!). [name]Cordelia[/name] is my least favourite [name]Shakespeare[/name] character (well, tied with [name]Juliet[/name]) so I wouldn’t do that one…

I don’t think you need to have a name decided before she’s born. I’d bring all three names to the hospital and decide once she’s here.

With [name]Agnes[/name], I love [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Felicity[/name]. That said, I do like [name]Bridget[/name], [name]Miranda[/name], and [name]Cordelia[/name] as well!

I have no clue what’s popular in British middle class circles, but I’m just going to assume that your concerns are valid, so I’m knocking [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Felicity[/name] down a peg. That said, I think they are both stunning!

Regarding [name]Bridget[/name] and whether or not it will remind you of an annoying relative, I’m going to say YES. I have a huge fear of baby name regret and with all those other amazing choices on your short list, I see no need for you to take the risk.

[name]Miranda[/name]: Absolutely my concern regarding that name too. If both of us thought it, that may mean it’s true.

[name]Cordelia[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name]! And cordial is a great word. Not a bad connotation at all. I had to strike [name]Violet[/name] off our list because it sounded too much like violent with our last name. (I see your hormones and raise you a few

So, I vote for [name]Cordelia[/name], hands-down! The rest, in order of my favorites for you:

  1. [name]Cordelia[/name]
  2. [name]Felicity[/name]
  3. [name]Beatrice[/name]
  4. [name]Miranda[/name]
  5. [name]Bridget[/name]

My vote: [name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Cordelia[/name] sound really great together!
All your pics are nice, but I like [name]Cordelia[/name]. Second choice, [name]Beatrice[/name], however I didn’t pick it because [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] both end in an S sound.
Good luck!

[name]Cordelia[/name] or [name]Beatrice[/name] (with [name]Cordelia[/name] taking a slight edge).

I know at least three [name]Miranda[/name]'s who are in their mid teens through early 30’s and quite a few [name]Bridget[/name]'s as well, so those two names seem quite commonplace next to [name]Agnes[/name]. [name]Felicity[/name] is lovely, but [name]Cordelia[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] fit with [name]Agnes[/name] so much better.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Agnes[/name]. You have great taste.
I think [name]Beatrice[/name] is the best of your choices. It has gravitas and history behind it, just like [name]Agnes[/name].

Congratulations!

[name]Agnes[/name] and…
[name]Miranda[/name] or [name]Beatrice[/name]!
Definitely [name]Miranda[/name] over [name]Cordelia[/name]. [name]Cordelia[/name] is so… swooning-over-the-back-of-the-chaise-longue. Lear is a brilliant but brutal play. I’d steer clear of [name]Cordelia[/name], even if she was the good sister. [name]Miranda[/name] is great- recognizable but fresh, gentle and warm, with an excellent literary namesake. I wouldn’t worry about Sex and the City.
I can’t speak to British naming trends, but [name]Beatrice[/name] is so crisp and regal and full of dark sparkle. Plus, there’s the [name]Divine[/name] Comedy…
[name]Do[/name] you have thoughts about middle names? I’m in favor of [name]Miranda[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] or [name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Miranda[/name], plus a shorter third name… Any family names on the table? For something Irish, perhaps:
[name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Miranda[/name] [name]Flann[/name]
[name]Miranda[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Roisin[/name]
[name]Clodagh[/name] [name]Miranda[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]

A vote for [name]Felicity[/name]!!

[name]Cordelia[/name], definitely! Second choice: [name]Felicity[/name].

Wishing you lots of luck with your new little one when she arrives!

My thoughts on these names, in a order of preference:
[name]Bridget[/name] - I’ve never met a [name]Bridget[/name] and would love to see it on a baby/child now. Really refreshing. Also think it is the best fit with [name]Agnes[/name], crisp and serious. Like both names.
[name]Beatrice[/name] - Excellent name and fits well with [name]Agnes[/name] style-wise. The shared S sound at end isn’t perfect, but nor is it a deal-breaker. I don’t think it’ll become super-popular, but then again, I wouldn’t imagine that [name]Florence[/name] is super-popular either! I’ve only met one.
[name]Cordelia[/name] - Nice name which keeps growing on me, in spite of associations. [name]Fancy[/name] compared with [name]Agnes[/name], but I’d still be tempted!
[name]Miranda[/name] - I’m a fan of [name]Cynthia[/name] [name]Nixon[/name] but not of the name. [name]Don[/name]'t like the harsh/dodgy ‘rand’ part. And it’s so different from [name]Agnes[/name].
[name]Felicity[/name] - Sorry I’ve always disliked this name, to me it is frilly and silly and tres upper class. But that’s just my taste/feelings, like pp said I’d recommend taking a few - even all of these - in your mind and seeing what baby girl looks like!

All the best!

To me [name]Cordelia[/name] is the obvious choice. If I met sisters named [name]Agnes[/name] & [name]Cordelia[/name] I would just about cry with happiness (or at the very least swoon).

Best of luck!

[name]Bridget[/name] - [name]Will[/name] it remind me too much of an annoying relative? - If you have an annoying relative with this name, take it off your list! Why honour someone you don’t adore? Especially when you have other (more) fabulous names?

[name]Felicity[/name] - too popular in British middle class circles? Is is the new [name]Florence[/name]? - think this is cute; can’t comment on its status in the UK

[name]Beatrice[/name] - too popular in British middle class circles? Is is the new [name]Florence[/name]? - [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] - this is my pick

[name]Miranda[/name] - Has Sex and the City ruined it? No it hasn’t; a lovely option but prefer [name]Beatrice[/name]

[name]Cordelia[/name] - I love it but have started to worry that it sounds like Cordial (I am very hormonal…) - I wish I loved this name because it could honour a close family member, but I just don’t. That said, it is lovely, and if you [name]LOVE[/name] it, as you say, more than the others, go for it. It’s isn’t too much like cordial in my book. But we don’t use the word cordial much in [name]Canada[/name]; might be different in the UK.

Best wishes for a smooth delivery. Congratulations! Let us know what you decide.

Ha, I have a friend with a [name]Cordelia[/name] and a [name]Miranda[/name], and just a few days ago, she had a [name]Rosalind[/name]. They’re clearly very into Shakespearean names, too.

Personally, I think that [name]Cordelia[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name] sound lovely together. They coordinate without being too matchy. I like [name]Beatrice[/name], too, but I find it hard to say with [name]Agnes[/name], probably due to them ending similarly.

Well I really like [name]Felicity[/name], so that gets my vote. If the popularity really bugs you, then I think [name]Miranda[/name] is absolutely fine. Sex and the City had ruined the popular [name]Charlotte[/name], so I don’t think [name]Miranda[/name] is ruined.

[name]Bridget[/name] - If you are second guessing it now you will then too.
[name]Felicity[/name] - Favourite!!! Use this one! I [name]ADORE[/name] IT.
[name]Beatrice[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]! Screw British middle class circles and use it.
[name]Miranda[/name] - Never a fan. Doesn’t fit with your other daughters name which is so classic.
[name]Cordelia[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t like.

I adore the name [name]Cordelia[/name] and plan on using it for a daughter someday.

[name]Cordelia[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] are my favorite names. However, I am not sure [name]Cordelia[/name] is the best fit with the clunky [name]Agnes[/name]. I think [name]Beatrice[/name], while not clunky, would be a better fit.
