4wks to go....still confused

[name]Hi[/name], we are due in 4wks and are not sure of the sex, and are really unsure of a name…it is our first
For boys we have
we like the name [name]Kirk[/name] as a second name, but aren’t set on it

For girls we have

Any advice would be much appreciated…we are not set solely on these names…thanks!

For boys we have
[name]Ned[/name] - great nn for [name]Edward[/name]
[name]Alfie[/name] - like this as a nn for [name]Alfred[/name]
[name]Joe[/name] - great nn for [name]Joseph[/name]
[name]Louis[/name]/[name]Lewis[/name] - either are great
[name]Hugo[/name] - so cute but trendy with the Hipsters
[name]William[/name] - classic, one of my favorites
[name]Noah[/name] - love
[name]Jacob[/name] - love, but this is so popular. Still if you love it, you gotta use it.
[name]Ben[/name] - great nn for [name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]Nate[/name] - do not like (the word nates means buttocks.)
[name]Carter[/name] - it’s okay
[name]Fred[/name] - great nn for [name]Frederick[/name]
we like the name [name]Kirk[/name] as a second name, but aren’t set on it

For girls we have
[name]Abby[/name] - [name]Abigail[/name] and [name]Abby[/name] are so popular
[name]Ava[/name] - so popular
[name]Josie[/name] - love as a nn for [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Poppy[/name] - very cute, could be a nn for [name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Tilly[/name] - love this so much as a nn for [name]Matilda[/name]

I think it’s important to give a baby a formal name because there are many formal occasions in life. Plus it gives them more choices of what to be called.

[name]Ned[/name] - sweet; may be easily rhymmed in gradeschool
[name]Alfie[/name] - I love this name, very British
[name]Joe[/name] - good, solid, classic name
[name]Louis[/name]/[name]Lewis[/name] - another classic
[name]Hugo[/name] - I like this name in theory, but have never personally seen it attached to a child
[name]William[/name] - one of my favorites! So classic with abundent nickname potential
[name]Noah[/name] - I like [name]Noah[/name], but it seems to be pretty popular right now, if that is a consideration
[name]Jacob[/name] - Great name
[name]Ben[/name] - [name]Love[/name] [name]Ben/name
[name]Nate[/name] - I like [name]Nate[/name], and [name]Nat[/name], for a [name]Nathan[/name] or [name]Nathaniel[/name]
[name]Carter[/name] - not in love with [name]Carter[/name]
[name]Fred[/name] - I like [name]Fred[/name], but it too has the same rhymming possibilities

[name]Abby[/name] - beautiful name, but very popular right now. I know three infant Abbys
[name]Ava[/name] - another beautiful choice; also popular
[name]Josie[/name] - not in love with [name]Josie[/name]
[name]Poppy[/name] - very cute name
[name]Tilly[/name] - I love [name]Tilly[/name] (or [name]Tillie[/name]). I think [name]Tillie[/name] is a great way to soften a classic like [name]Matilda[/name]

[name]Hi[/name] there! Congrats! Many of your selected names seem like nicknames to me, were you planning on naming the baby a longer name and calling him or her the shorter version? Or were you planning on just naming him or her the name below as a full name?

As someone with a very short name and no nickname potential, I would highly recommend naming your baby the longer, more full name so he/she has the option of using that for formal or professional purposes later in life.

[name]Ned[/name] just okay for me, I like others better but I do like [name]Susan[/name]'s suggestion of [name]Edward[/name] for the longer name. Then he could be [name]Ned[/name] or [name]Eddie[/name] (which is also very cute!)

[name]Alfie[/name] [name]Love[/name] this if you use the full name of [name]Alfred[/name] and call him [name]Alfie[/name], very cute but it can grow with him into adulthood with the full name

[name]Joe[/name] [name]Joesph[/name]? [name]Josiah[/name]? nn [name]Joey[/name]? All great options

[name]Louis[/name]/[name]Lewis[/name] I [name]Love[/name] both [name]Louis[/name] (pronounced [name]Louie[/name]) and [name]Lewis[/name]. [name]Both[/name] are adorable!

[name]Hugo[/name] [name]Love[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] too! There was another post about [name]Hugo[/name] a few weeks ago and I also stuck up for him then! Adorable, strong yet sweet, not terribly common but totally approachable. Adorable!

[name]William[/name] Good solid name. Tough to go wrong here.

[name]Noah[/name] Not my favorite for some reason, but a nice name also

[name]Jacob[/name] has been #1 I think for a while, just a consideration.

[name]Ben[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name]? Very nice, strong, classic.

[name]Nate[/name] [name]Nathan[/name]? Cute, fairly common but still a great choice

[name]Carter[/name] slightly trendy, but I still like it. It doesn’t have the classicness of your other choices

[name]Fred[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] is a GREAT name and I think underused lately. Very handsome!

[name]Kirk[/name] as a middle would go great with some but not all of these choices. Lets pick the firsts you love and then search for middles because right now there are SO many combinations!

Other firsts to consider:
[name]Archer[/name]/[name]Archibald[/name] nn [name]Archie[/name]
[name]Lucas[/name] nn [name]Luke[/name]
[name]Clayton[/name] nn [name]Clay[/name]

For girls we have
[name]Abby[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] is beautiful, strong, and smart and [name]Abby[/name] gives her the option of a cute and fun nickname!

[name]Ava[/name] VERY popular (#4) she likely would have many other Avas in her class. Too bad though because I also love this name and hadn’t realized its recent popularity.

[name]Josie[/name] I love [name]Josephine[/name] or [name]Josephina[/name], as [name]Jocelyn[/name] is a great option to nn [name]Josie[/name]

[name]Poppy[/name] Cute but DEFINITELY needs a longer name to give her the option when she’s older (ie: she is CEO of a company named [name]Poppy[/name]? Probably would like [name]Patricia[/name] or another longer name to fall back on) Here are some options: [name]Primrose[/name], [name]Priscilla[/name], [name]Pomona[/name], [name]Philippa[/name] (also nn [name]Pippa[/name]), [name]Petra[/name], [name]Paulina[/name], [name]Paloma[/name], [name]Pamela[/name], [name]Padma[/name]

[name]Tilly[/name] Cute nickname for [name]Talia[/name] or Altamira, I am sure others can come up with more!

A few more:
[name]Eve[/name] or even [name]Evelyn[/name] nn [name]Eve[/name]
[name]Georgina[/name] ([name]Georgie[/name])
[name]Elsa[/name] nn [name]Elsie[/name]

For boys we have
[name]Ned[/name] - too short…needs something more official
[name]Alfie[/name] - sounds like a dog’s name
[name]Joe[/name] - too plain
[name]Louis[/name]/[name]Lewis[/name] - eh, kinda geeky, but on the right kid it could be cute
[name]Hugo[/name] - is a hurricane to me
[name]William[/name] - nice and plain
[name]Noah[/name] - ok
[name]Jacob[/name] - common
[name]Ben[/name] - plain
[name]Nate[/name] - getting to be popular
[name]Carter[/name] - nice
[name]Fred[/name] - nope
we like the name [name]Kirk[/name] as a second name, but aren’t set on it — I like [name]Kirk[/name] as a first name better than any others on your list.

For girls we have
[name]Abby[/name] - ubber common
[name]Ava[/name] - ditto
[name]Josie[/name] - short for ?
[name]Poppy[/name] - eh
[name]Tilly[/name] - short for??

I have to say Hayeser, that was not very constructive. Your screen name makes me a little curious about you. Is Hayeser supposed to mean Hazer?

What’s Hazer?
I agree, that post seemed pretty negative and unresearched.

As in the verb to [name]Haze[/name]?

We are really appreciating your advice…we love it!

We really appreciate the other name suggestions…Thankyou

[name]Ned[/name]: I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ned[/name] as a nickname for [name]Nathan[/name], [name]Nathaniel[/name], and [name]Edward[/name].

[name]Alfie[/name]: Darling, as is the longer [name]Alfred[/name].

[name]Joe[/name]: I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Joseph[/name]!

[name]Louis[/name]/[name]Lewis[/name]: I prefer many of your other names…

[name]Hugo[/name]: I really like [name]Hugo[/name]!

[name]William[/name]: One of my favorites…

[name]Noah[/name]: A great name…

[name]Jacob[/name]: Too popular for me…What about [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], or [name]Gideon[/name]?

[name]Ben[/name]: [name]Benjamin[/name] is one of my favorites!

[name]Nate[/name]: I adore [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Nathan[/name]!

[name]Carter[/name]: [name]Carter[/name] is too trendy for my taste, but I suppose it would make a nice middle name.

[name]Fred[/name]: [name]Frederick[/name] is a great choice…

we like the name [name]Kirk[/name] as a second name, but aren’t set on it: I’m not a fan of [name]Kirk[/name], but that’s just me!

For girls we have
[name]Abby[/name]: [name]Abigail[/name] is quite popular, but it’s a lovely name!

[name]Ava[/name]: Waaayy too popular!

[name]Josie[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]!

[name]Poppy[/name]: [name]Penelope[/name] is great!

[name]Tilly[/name]: [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Matilda[/name]!

As others already mentioned, you’ve listed a lot of fantastic nicknames, but they aren’t substantial enough for a first name. By using the full names (which still give you the nicknames), you’ve got the best of both worlds!

Some more ideas:
[name]Edward[/name] (nn [name]Ned[/name] or [name]Teddy[/name])
[name]Phineas[/name] (nn [name]Finn[/name])

[name]Esme[/name] (ez-[name]MAY[/name])

Best wishes to you!

newtribe, are you in the UK by any chance? A lot of the names we consider “nicknames” in the States are very popular given names in the UK. I love your ideas!

My favorites from your list are:

[name]Lewis[/name] [name]Kirk[/name], [name]William[/name] [name]Kirk[/name], [name]Alfie[/name] [name]William[/name] are my favorites!

[name]Josie[/name] and [name]Tilly[/name] are my favorites from your girl list, but being an American and all, I’d probably use [name]Josephine[/name] and/or [name]Matilda[/name].

Great name choices though!
