5. Changing Main Character Again/How inaccurate is too inaccurate?

Genre: Historical Fiction
Time Period/Location: 1930’s-1948; [name_f]Austria[/name_f], [name_f]France[/name_f], and [name_f]England[/name_f]
Brief Plot: A young pianist is found drowned in a lake. We go back to her adolescence in [name_f]Austria[/name_f], her student years in [name_f]Vienna[/name_f] and [name_u]Paris[/name_u], and her young adulthood in [name_u]London[/name_u], to see how she got to that point. There’s romance, death, war, and other stuff.
Unchanged Characters: See immediate family.

CHARACTER 1
Current Name: [name_f]Rosamunde[/name_f] [name_f]Natalya[/name_f] [name_f]Luise[/name_f] Koenig

[name_m]Reason[/name_m] for Change: I feel that her first name is totally inaccurate. She was born in [name_f]Austria[/name_f]-Hungary in 1917, and I’ve yet to find any evidence that [name_f]Rosamunde[/name_f] was used during this time period. My original reasoning for the name was the fact that her mother was a fan of music, and [name_f]Rosamunde[/name_f] was an opera by [name_m]Franz[/name_m] Schubert. The middle names are fine- they have meaning- but that first name is really irking me.

Character Description:

  • [name_m]Born[/name_m] 25 [name_u]December[/name_u], 1917
  • Father: Austrian Jew (doctor)
  • Mother: [name_m]Born[/name_m] and raised in [name_f]Austria[/name_f], parents were Russian (pianist)
  • Second daughter, middle of six children
  • [name_m]Black[/name_m] hair, olive green eyes

Immediate Family:
Mother: [name_f]Esther[/name_f] Arkyadovna Koenig (nee Zhirinovskya)
Father: [name_m]Otto[/name_m] [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m] [name_m]Emil[/name_m] Koenig
Sisters:

  • [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_u]Auguste[/name_u] (born 1916)
  • [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Karolina[/name_f] [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (born 1920)
  • [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] (born 1928)
    Brothers:

Already Considered:
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]
[name_f]Hedwig[/name_f]
[name_f]Romola[/name_f]

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t Suggest: Any previously considered names.

Additional Notes: I’ve gone over this characters name so many times, and I’d really like to reach a solid resolution. I [name_f]MAY[/name_f] be willing to consider switching her name with [name_f]Anna[/name_f]'s.

Thanks so much in advance- and sorry about the length of this post!

[name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] was used during that time period, and appears in [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m].

A name inspired by Germanic/Austrian opera at the time could be [name_f]Salome[/name_f], [name_f]Grete[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], Brünnhilde, [name_f]Leonore[/name_f], and [name_f]Pamina[/name_f].

@maepae- thanks for the response! I’m curious though, what’s your source for the use of [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] in 1917?
The other names are nice, but not exactly what I’m looking for. Thank you though!

[name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]. You may remember [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] being the first woman [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] was obsessed with before he met [name_f]Juliet[/name_f].

@Maepae- I remember. However, that doesn’t mean that it was used in 1917 [name_f]Austria[/name_f] Hungary.

[name_u]True[/name_u], but that dates it to Elizabethan. And we all know names usually just don’t disappear into thin air, which is why most European countries have multiple variations of the same name.

There are birth records that also indicate Rosalies that lived in [name_f]Austria[/name_f] prior to the 1900s. A simple Google search will return you with this result, amongst others: Sorry, this page does not exist | Ancestry

  • [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Luisa[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Agnese[/name_f]
    [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] … [name_f]Roberta[/name_f] Ottonia [name_f]Pia[/name_f] [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Ignatia[/name_f] – daughter of [name_f]Zita[/name_f]

They went all out with middle names haha. Sorry for any repeats, best of luck!

*I wrote … when I skipped a few names

@imogen_eve- I really like a lot of our suggestions! [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f], [name_f]Agnese[/name_f], [name_f]Antonia[/name_f], and [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] are among my favorites. Thanks!
Any other ideas?

I think I have some good suggestions. I’ll close this thread and open a poll.
Thanks Berries!
