Our 5 month old (almost 6 month old) still doesn’t have a name and we’re not even close to picking one. We were having trouble with his name before he was born and knew we wouldn’t have one ready by the time he was born. After some phone calls I found we have a year until we have to give him a name. We’re stuck. After looking through my original list I narrowed it down to a few. When my son was born I tried a few names out to see which one seemed like it actually fit him. I settled on [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]. The more I thought about it the more I liked it and I seemed like the “right” name, I had found it. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Problem is my husband HATES the name. He is usually a go-with-the-flow type but he hates this name so it’s out. I can’t push him to naming our son a name he truly hates. On the flip side he likes names like [name_m]Cassius[/name_m], [name_m]Brutus[/name_m], [name_m]Gaius[/name_m], etc. He has a thing for ancient [name_m]Roman[/name_m] names. I’m not a fan. I don’t like the “us” at the end of the names.
Basically I’m looking for a name that is unique and different but not totally out there. The names I’ve like so far are:
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] (vetoed)
[name_m]Damon[/name_m] (doesn’t seem quite right, plus my husband likes the spelling [name_m]Daemon[/name_m], which looks like Demon to me).
[name_m]Damian[/name_m] (seems like a sinister, dark name. I think it was the name of a hellish character in a movie).
[name_m]Donovan[/name_m] (don’t love it).
[name_m]Davian[/name_m] (just looked it up yesterday, not sure if I like it yet).
You can see I have mostly D names because he looks like he should have a D name but I’m open to all other ideas. He is a VERY happy kid, smiling and giggling ALL THE TIME. Opposite of my daughter who is much more serious. So I was thinking of maybe something that matched his personality some what.
My friends have son’s names [name_m]Ronin[/name_m], [name_u]Everest[/name_u], [name_m]Nereo[/name_m], [name_m]Nazario[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u], etc. I am looking for a name in that vein, so all common names are out.
Also our last name is Hispanic (Salcedo) even though we are not so I’m trying to stay away from Hispanic sounding first names. He will also have two middle names so you can see what a mess were creating already
So far his name will be XXX [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m] [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] Salcedo. [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m] is a family name (I thought about using it for the first name but it doesn’t really fit him). Does he need a 1 syllable first name, 2 syllable first name?
ANY IDEAS AT ALL?? REALLY ANYTHING WOULD BE HELPFUL. MAYBE YOU’VE THOUGHT OF SOMETHING THAT HASN’T COME TO US.
ancient roman without the us:
[name_m]Cassian[/name_m]
[name_u]Cato[/name_u]
[name_m]Cyprian[/name_m]
[name_m]Hadrian[/name_m]
Gratian
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]
[name_m]Virgil[/name_m]
I think your styles are actually highly compatible. I’m not a big fan of -us names either, but I do love ancient names. I suggest you look at names ending in -as, which might give you more Greek than [name_m]Roman[/name_m] names, but your husband might like them?
Also, there are lots of [name_m]Roman[/name_m] names ending in -an. There’s [name_m]Julius[/name_m] and there’s [name_m]Julian[/name_m].
Celestian
[name_m]Aurelian[/name_m]
Perhaps go through your husband’s list, take the -us off and see what you get?
Or look up all the names you both like on behindthename.com and see other variants of those names.
Babynamewizard.col has a search form that lets you search for names with eg. a certain ending, like -as.
You can also type in a name that you like, eg. [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], and see what [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]'s siblings might be named (based on user input, I think.)
Thank you for the name suggestions. It’s helpful to see some new ideas instead of looking at the same old list that I have (where nothing seems to work)!
For some reason, I’m not sure why, I can’t seem to reply to people individually. Thank you for all your input, it’s been really helpful. There are a few names I’ve seen on here that are sparking my interest. [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] seems interesting. I’m also kind of liking Damo, cute and I like the nickname [name_u]Day[/name_u].
Question: [name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_m]Idris[/name_m]?
Also thank you for suggesting the other websites, I’m definitely going to check them out.
We’ll figure his name out soon I hope! I have [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] gifts (homemade) I want to put his name on. We need a name first to do this of course
[name_m]Dmitri[/name_m] stands out to me that might be a fit… This spelling also helps with the overall length on names including his long middles and last. It still has three syllables but I feel like you are leaning towards liking longer names. I also like [name_m]Drake[/name_m] with your styles and again, the combo.
What about [name_m]Darius[/name_m]? It was the name of three famous Persian kings including [name_m]Darius[/name_m] the Great (550-486 BCE), father of [name_m]Xerxes[/name_m], whose empire spread from [name_u]Persia[/name_u] across Mesopotamia to [name_u]Egypt[/name_u] and [name_f]Asia[/name_f] [name_m]Minor[/name_m].
Other D names not yet mentioned (?):
Damson
[name_m]Dante[/name_m]
Dastan
[name_m]Demetrius[/name_m]
Devendra
[name_m]Diarmuid[/name_m]
[name_u]Dominy[/name_u]
Drogo - before Games of Thrones this was a medieval name, borne by a saint and by one of the sons of Holy [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Emperor [name_m]Charles[/name_m] II (“the [name_m]Bald[/name_m]”); Tolkien also used it, for the father of [name_m]Frodo[/name_m] Baggins
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Digby[/name_m]. What about Tasman? Obviously doesn’t start with a D but it’s similar to [name_m]Desmond[/name_m].
[name_m]Bastian[/name_m]? [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]? [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]?
[name_u]Devon[/name_u] and/or [name_u]Devin[/name_u] are the only ‘englishy’ names I have to suggest
Male Greek names end in an -is or -os sound which could be of help!
For example; Dimitris (nn mimis/dimis/dimi?)
Demis is another one i really like that stands by itself but could also be another nickname of Dimitris
Demosthenis with Demis as a nickname is also quite popular in Greece
I can sympathize as I adore the name [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], but it was unusable for us for a variety of reasons (trilingual problems!). I thought immediately of [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], which has already been suggested, when I read your post ([name_u]Cass[/name_u]-ee-an pronunciation) as an alternative to [name_m]Cassius[/name_m].
[name_m]Darius[/name_m] is another fantastic suggestion, but I wanted to mention that you could use the Italian version, [name_m]Dario[/name_m] (Dah-ree-o, not “dairy-oh”) if you’re still not into the “us” ending-names.
And when you mentioned your son is smiling and happy, I also thought of [name_m]Felix[/name_m]–which is a Latin name that doesn’t end in “us,” too.
