7 Deadly Naming Trends

I came along an interesting article about the 7 deadly naming trends.
[name]Do[/name] you agree these are deadly trends???

  1. Mc craze: [name]Mckinley[/name], [name]Mackenzie[/name], [name]Makayla[/name], [name]Makenna[/name]…
  2. Surnames as first names. Article noted a majority of boys were 2 syllable ending in R or N. Girls N or “ee” sound.
  3. “[name]Aiden[/name]” and it’s spin offs- [name]Brayden[/name], [name]Caden[/name], [name]Jaden[/name], [name]Zaden[/name].
  4. [name]Ella[/name]/ [name]Bella[/name]- everything that relates: [name]Isabella[/name], [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Stella[/name], [name]El[/name] names like [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Ellery[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Ella[/name].
  5. 'K’raze Names starting with K- [name]Kayden[/name], [name]Khloe[/name], [name]Kameron[/name], [name]Kayla[/name], [name]Konnor[/name], [name]Kasey[/name]
  6. Substituting an ‘i’ or ‘e’ with Y or adding the letter Y: [name]Zoey[/name], Rhylie, Sophya, [name]Alyvia[/name], [name]Ayden[/name]
  7. Place names: [name]Brooklyn[/name], [name]Paris[/name], [name]Hudson[/name], [name]India[/name], [name]Montana[/name], [name]Savannah[/name], [name]Aspen[/name]

Hmm interesting! Did the article explain why they saw these as negative trends? I think most people would agree that all of the above are current/recent naming trends, however there would be alot of controversary as to whether these are positive trends or ‘deadly’ as the article says…

Saying that - here’s my personal opinion on these trends!

  1. Mc craze: [name]Mckinley[/name], [name]Mackenzie[/name], [name]Makayla[/name], [name]Makenna[/name]… Not my personal taste, although I don’t mind [name]Mackenzie[/name].
  2. Surnames as first names. Article noted a majority of boys were 2 syllable ending in R or N. Girls N or “ee” sound. This doesn’t bother me too much, as long as it’s a last name that suits being a first name. I love that more and more women are turning their maiden name into a first or middle name for their children, I think that’s a really special way to pass on your family name.
  3. “[name]Aiden[/name]” and it’s spin offs- [name]Brayden[/name], [name]Caden[/name], [name]Jaden[/name], [name]Zaden[/name]. Not a fan of names like these to be honest. They sound quite harsh to me.
  4. [name]Ella[/name]/ [name]Bella[/name]- everything that relates: [name]Isabella[/name], [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Stella[/name], [name]El[/name] names like [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Ellery[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Ella[/name]. I think these names are quite classic and will date well. To me they are feminine and filled with character and class.
  5. 'K’raze Names starting with K- [name]Kayden[/name], [name]Khloe[/name], [name]Kameron[/name], [name]Kayla[/name], [name]Konnor[/name], [name]Kasey[/name] This is the trend I personally can’t stand! To me it often just seems like the parents are just trying to prove some point of ‘individuality’ - ugh!
  6. Substituting an ‘i’ or ‘e’ with Y or adding the letter Y: [name]Zoey[/name], Rhylie, Sophya, [name]Alyvia[/name], [name]Ayden[/name] Generally not a fan of these, for much the same reasons as my point above. Although I must say I don’t mind [name]Zoey[/name] spelt that way.
  7. Place names: [name]Brooklyn[/name], [name]Paris[/name], [name]Hudson[/name], [name]India[/name], [name]Montana[/name], [name]Savannah[/name], [name]Aspen[/name] Not my personal style but I don’t hate the trend in general.

My impression is it was highlighting the trends to make people more aware of what they are choosing and how modern trends may influence their choices.
It also makes suggestions about better ways to follow the trend without being predictable here are some of the many examples eg if you wanted ‘y’ in a name choose one that originally has a Y in it- eg [name]Ayla[/name], [name]Bryony[/name]. For the “[name]Ella[/name]” trend choose something like [name]Fenella[/name], [name]Elodie[/name], [name]Giselle[/name]. If you want a “K” name choose ones that originally starts with a K. For an “ee” ending: [name]Amelie[/name], Sylvie, [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Leilani[/name].

I think they just named the article that as a quirky reference to the [name]Seven[/name] Deadly Sins.

I’m not a fan of modern trends in general. Any names that fall under that category are bound to become outdated sooner or later.

I agree with those totally with a few exceptions.

[name]Gabriella[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Zoey[/name], [name]Hudson[/name], are far from deadly names. [name]Savannah[/name] fit that trend about…12 years ago, now it’s a none issue.

I completely agree with the exception of 2 and 7. I would substitute those with:

  1. Change the “y” to “i” and add “gh” - (Ashleigh, Kinleigh, etc)
  2. Sons ≠ Daughters - (Madison, Addison, Emerson, etc on girls)
  1. Mc craze - I don’t mind some of these names, but what I don’t like is the misspellings and made up versions.

  2. Surnames as first names - Depends on the name for me. I’m generally not a fan of most surname names, but I do love [name]Carter[/name] and [name]Elliott[/name] (I know this is a first name too, but this spelling is considered the surname version).

  3. “[name]Aiden[/name]” and it’s spin offs - I’m kind of sad about this trend because I actually really like [name]Braden[/name], [name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Hayden[/name]. What I don’t like are the people that think “hmm, I like [name]Aidan[/name], but that’s too popular. What letter can I stick on there to make up my own? [name]Zayden[/name]! Perfect!” Also, the misspellings. Most of the most popular spellings aren’t “correct” ([name]Aiden[/name] vs. [name]Aidan[/name], [name]Brayden[/name] vs. [name]Braden[/name]).

  4. [name]Ella[/name]/ [name]Bella[/name]- everything that relates - UGH this is the one I’m sick of. There are just so many Ellas and Bellas out there. It’s starting to seem like the least creative thing in the world. “Ok, we’re having a girl, what [name]Ella[/name]/bella name should we choose?” Yawn.

  5. 'K’raze Names starting with K - I don’t mind names that actually start with K, like [name]Kayla[/name], [name]Kaia[/name], names like that. I don’t like changing the C for a K. Too Kardashian.

  6. Substituting an ‘i’ or ‘e’ with Y or adding the letter Y - Really depends on the name but I generally like the original spellings of names. I’m not a huge fan of changing them. The worst is taking a boy’s name and “making it feminine” by adding a y. If you’re going to name her a boy’s name, just spell it right!

  7. Place names - I’m also generally not a fan of place names. Really depends on the name again though.

I agree, I think the point of the article would be to enlighten people who think names like [name]Ayden[/name] and Mkinzie are original and unique. I can stand [name]Makenna[/name], but the rest of the Mc/[name]Mac[/name] names really bother me. They sound too trendy. Sorry to anyone who likes or has these names, just my honest opinion. All of the trendy -den/-dan names bother me, as well as the i/e names substituted with a y, excluding certain already-accepted names like [name]Alyson[/name] or [name]Kayla[/name]. Regarding K, they’re fine if that’s how they’ve been spelled for hundreds of years, but I don’t like respelled names like [name]Kaydence[/name] or Kallum. Certain place names are great - [name]Vienna[/name], [name]Holland[/name], [name]Astoria[/name]… I just don’t like the uber popular ones like [name]Austin[/name] and [name]Dallas[/name]. And there’s nothing wrong with -belle names per say (except maybe crazy ones like Hollybelle) it’s just that they’re sooooo popular.

I just saw Deadly Naming Trend #5 “K”
On Super [name]Nanny[/name]: Mother Karolee, children Kalyin (boy), [name]Kolton[/name] (boy) and [name]Kadence[/name]… not sure what dad is called, [name]Karter[/name]?

  1. The Mc/MC/[name]Mac[/name] craze – I do not like a single name of these. I can say I almost despise [name]McKenzie[/name], but eh.
  2. Surnames as first names – I agree. I do like [name]Kensington[/name] and [name]Emerson[/name]. This doesn’t bother me, albeit it is a tad tedious.
  3. [name]Aiden[/name] and Spin-Offs – This does bother me quite a bit. From that section, I don’t like a lot of names.
  4. Names starting with K – I do hate substituting an C with a K. It gives spelling problems, and makes the name sound…harsher, bolder. I mean, [name]Khloe[/name] and [name]Konnor[/name], really¬¬¬¬?
  5. [name]Ella[/name]/[name]Bella[/name] & Friends – This one I mind the least. But it does get obnoxious when the names are made-up a la Avabelle, [name]Elizabelle[/name], Emmabelle, Hannabelle, [name]Marabelle[/name], Miabelle, Sarabelle, Evabelle (I admit, I do like Evabel), Adibella, Lizabelle. The new [name]Belle[/name] Epoque. I like [name]El[/name] names, so no comment on that.
  6. Substituting an I or E with Y and adding the letter Y – This kind of troubles me. Not a fan. Though, in some cases, it can be attractive.
  7. Place names – this is a trend. Well, a bit annoying if you consider names [name]London[/name] and [name]Asia[/name], but, some are bad some are good, what else can I say?

I agree with most of these except the ell/ella trend. [name]Even[/name] though it is highly popular and overused the names are still nice. I like [name]Stella[/name] at the moment.

I’d generally agree with most of these, as far as my own distaste for current trends… except that #6 substituting a Y for i/e/ie and #5 K names both seem dated enough (80s and 90s) that they don’t even feel like “trends” anymore.

I also don’t think that place names HAVE to be obnoxious by default, but I’m not personally crazy about place names that are highly recognizable (for example, [name]London[/name] or [name]Paris[/name]) where I do like more obscure ones (Telavi, Foxton, Evora). I tend to like the idea of a place name that has personal significance, but a place name for the sake of a place name can seem contrived… sometimes even trashy, like the parents are attempting to show an air of class by naming their kid after some fashionable European city.

Those spellings on number 6 are terrible!

  1. Agree. I saw a McAllister (girl). Surnames should be left to the boys.
  2. [name]Don[/name]'t agree as relates to boys. ([name]Fitzwilliam[/name] [name]Darcy[/name] has helped a good deal in forming this opinion :)) But girls shouldn’t not have surnames.
  3. Go ahead and follow it if you like, but I’m not a fan of “den” names.
  4. [name]Bella[/name] names- not a fan. [name]Ella[/name] names - more traditional and lovely
  5. Some are okay. [name]Katherine[/name], [name]Kayla[/name], [name]Kay[/name]. Some are not.
  6. Agree. Poor children must spell out their names all the time.
  7. Some are okay. Personally, I like some wierd ones. [name]Vienna[/name], [name]Andorra[/name]. Then the normals. [name]Georgia[/name], [name]Virginia[/name]. I think the place should have a nice connotation and sound like a name. ([name]Paris[/name]? Not a girl’s name. [name]Brooklyn[/name]? Isn’t that a bad area of NY?)

100% agree with southern.maple. Sons do not equal daughters.

Agree about all the Mc/[name]Mac[/name] names. I don’t think there is a single one I like.

Surnames as first names I’m so-so about. I absolutely hate some of them [name]Porter[/name], [name]Kennedy[/name], [name]Slater[/name], [name]Grayson[/name], [name]Cooper[/name], hate hate hate. But there are others that don’t bother me so much. My own name, [name]Kimberly[/name], was originally a surname and is now recognized as a 100% valid first name. I don’t mind [name]Darcy[/name], [name]Bennett[/name], [name]Cassidy[/name], [name]Quinn[/name], [name]Piper[/name] and others. I can’t really pick out what it is about some of them, I guess they feel too corporate and not warm.

Totally agree about adding every letter of the alphabet to [name]Aiden[/name], as well as the crazy train of K’s and Y’s

I hardly think that [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name] can be rightly included in the [name]Ella[/name]/[name]Bella[/name] trend though. Those are ancient names and unaltered. And the other ones you list aren’t that bad either, [name]Stella[/name] and [name]Annabel[/name] and [name]Isabelle[/name] are very old names. What comes mind for me are the true made up smooshes like Sarabelle or Elivia.

Place names are like the surname trend to me, some are horrible and some I can handle. I like [name]Berlin[/name] but had [name]Montana[/name]. I adore [name]Geneva[/name] but I hate [name]Georgia[/name]. I like [name]Hudson[/name] but hate [name]Savannah[/name].

Agree here a lot with the following tweaks. 1. Not a fan of most of the “Mc” names but I do love [name]Michaela[/name]. Not a “Mc” name but it may have started the trend. Misspellings are almost always awful. Almost.

2 Sir names as first names? [name]Love[/name] it. I have a [name]Connor[/name] [name]David[/name].

  1. [name]Aiden[/name] was a fine name then it went crazy in popularity. I happen to like [name]Cayden[/name] for a boy.

  2. K kraze. NO! “[name]Chloe[/name]” should not be spelled with a K. [name]EVER[/name]!

5 Vowel subs? NO NO NO!!!

  1. Place names mostly NO! However, I have a [name]Chelsea[/name] [name]Grace[/name] - but the name means more to me than a neighborhood in NY or [name]England[/name].

I concur this, exactly.

  1. This one doesn’t bother me so much, except [name]Makayla[/name].
  2. For the most part, I really like surnames as first names.
  3. I like [name]Braden[/name], other than that I wouldn’t use these names.
  4. Some of these names I really like, some I can live without.
  5. Leave the K trend to the Kardashians, unless they’re names that have always been spelled with a K.
  6. This trend is the one that bugs me the most. I like traditional spellings.
  7. Really depends on the name for me. I like [name]India[/name] and [name]Aspen[/name] but can’t stand [name]Brooklyn[/name] and [name]Paris[/name].

Yeah, those are definitely all trends that I mostly hate. However, as much as I say that, there are a few names I love that technically fit into one of those categories. [name]Florence[/name], for example, is a place name, but that’s not how I think of it. [name]Asher[/name] fits into the “ends in -er”/last name trend, but I think of it as a biblical name. Though I don’t like [name]Ella[/name] or [name]Bella[/name], I don’t hate them, and I like some of the [name]El[/name] names, like [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Stella[/name].

However, I just can’t understand “mc” names (they feel dated to me- perhaps because I grew up with a lot of [name]MacKenzie[/name]'s and [name]McKayla[/name]'s), K names, or re-spelling a name. I also hate most place names, like [name]Brooklyn[/name] or [name]London[/name].
