a baby girls name wasn't this hard the first time...

My husband and I are expecting our second daughter, in a month, and we haven’t finalized her name. Our first daughters name, [name_u]Addison[/name_u], stood out to both of us. We knew it was the name immediately and never second guessed our decision. This time around, it’s not as easy. I fear that I will not love our baby girls name as much as we love her older sisters name. Please help!

We are not stuck on a name with a certain letter first (like A) or a specific theme. I would like something that sounded nice with [name_u]Addison[/name_u]. I really like the following names: [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] ([name_f]Alexa[/name_f] - nickname), [name_f]Paige[/name_f], [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Bridget[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], and [name_u]Sydney[/name_u].

My husband is very selective and rather good a picking names. He recommended our daughters name - very quickly. The names he has recommended for baby girl are: [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and recently [name_f]Sienna[/name_f].

From both lists, we can only agree on [name_f]Paige[/name_f] and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]. I worry that [name_f]Paige[/name_f] is not as strong of a name as [name_u]Addison[/name_u] and that [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] is more unique than [name_u]Addison[/name_u].

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestions on current names that we should revisit?

I could see [name_u]Addison[/name_u] and [name_f]Paige[/name_f] together. I also like [name_u]Addison[/name_u] and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], and I don’t think [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] is so much more unique than [name_u]Addison[/name_u] that they would seem odd together.

I would say that since none of the names from your list or your husband’s list are grabbing you like the name [name_u]Addison[/name_u] did, it is time to move on from them. I think we can find you something you love just as much as [name_u]Addison[/name_u]!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about:
[name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]
[name_f]Coraline[/name_f]
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u]
[name_u]Everly[/name_u]
[name_u]Reagan[/name_u]
[name_u]Leighton[/name_u]
[name_f]Romilly[/name_f]
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u]

If you didn’t mind another A name you might consider:
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] some of these helped!

I think [name_f]Paige[/name_f] sounds nice with [name_u]Addison[/name_u]. I also like [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] with it. It sounds like you’re leaning toward more trendy, non-frilly girls’ names. [name_m]How[/name_m] about:

[name_u]Paisley[/name_u]
[name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
[name_u]Kendall[/name_u]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - “[name_f]Edie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] or [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] are pretty names and would work well with [name_u]Addison[/name_u]

Of [name_f]Paige[/name_f] and [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], I prefer [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] - it feels fresher and livelier than [name_f]Paige[/name_f] to me. I really don’t think it’s such an unusual name that it would look strange next to [name_u]Addison[/name_u], though of course that’s subjective.

Of the other names on your and your husband’s lists, none stands out as being particularly problematic with [name_u]Addison[/name_u]. If I’m being really picky, I would wonder if [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] would sound too similar to [name_u]Addison[/name_u] (short “a” sound in the first syllable - would “[name_u]Nat[/name_u]” sound different enough from “[name_m]Add[/name_m]” when you called it across the playground?). Also, apologies if this is insulting, but I feel like [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f] has had its day and will feel dated - it’s a name that’s common in my generation and a bit younger, so it doesn’t seem as current for a baby now. And I know [name_u]Addison[/name_u] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] don’t actually rhyme, but they feel quite similar in that they have the same number of syllables and both end in “n”.

I am also leaning in the direction that there is another name we haven’t considered. Really appreciate the suggestions as it gets me thinking of a different perspective.

I love [name_u]Reagan[/name_u], but my hubby feels it’s for a little boy and hasn’t caught on that girls are taking the name over. I do not mind another A name, but am conscious (or maybe too conscious) about giving her a name similar to someone we know. I would say [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is my favorite. [name_f]Do[/name_f] we think it is to close to my cousin [name_u]Ashton[/name_u]?

I also agree that Katelyn is dated and that was one of my big hesitations with the name.

[name_f]Scarlet[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Paige[/name_f] are nice names that are fine with [name_u]Addison[/name_u]. [name_f]Sienna[/name_f] is also not too different to go with [name_u]Addison[/name_u], but it’s so close to [name_u]Sierra[/name_u] ( a name I hear everywhere I turn in my area.) [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is not too close to [name_u]Ashton[/name_u].

[name_u]Addison[/name_u] and…
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
Lexington
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u]

Whether [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is too similar to a cousin [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] is more a question of how often you see cousin [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and how close they are in age - if [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] would be likely to be playmates day-to-day I do think they’re too close; if [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] would only see each other once a year, or if [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] is 15 years older than [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] would be, they don’t seem too close to me. HOWEVER: [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] sounds far too similar to [name_u]Addison[/name_u] to me when I say them out loud.

If you live in the U.S. and you’re trying to get your husband to see that [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] has gone to the girls (and apologies if you’ve already done this), show him the SSA listings for it: in 2013, [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] was #104 on the girl names list, [name_f]Raegan[/name_f] was #305, and [name_u]Regan[/name_u] was #879; on the boy names list for 2013, [name_u]Reagan[/name_u] was #960 and if I understand correctly, neither of the other spellings was in the top 1000 on the boys’ list. So (like many unisex names) although I think it started out as a surname and was then used as a boy name, it’s mostly used these days for girls. The link to the SSA site: Popular Baby Names
