A baby sister for Leo...advice needed please!

We are expecting our second child, a baby girl, in [name]July[/name]. Big brother (3) is [name]Leo[/name] [name]Aaron[/name]. I still LOOOOOOOVE his name and I am having a lot of anxiety about thinking of a name for our daughter that I will love as much.

I do have a lot of naming “quirks” that I hope you can help me think through. I prefer names that are simple (easy to spell and pronounce), obviously one-gender, not recently invented or modified, and that will work well on children and adults. I am not a huge fan of using a name that will lead to an obvious nickname (like naming a baby [name]Katherine[/name] if you know you’re always going to call her [name]Kate[/name]), but I’ve come around more to this idea since naming [name]Leo[/name]. We are Jewish, so we would like a name that doesn’t have obvious [name]Christian[/name] connotations…but the name does not have to be obviously a “Jewish” name. Last name starts with P (2 syllables) so I would prefer to stay away from P first names, which is kind of too bad because [name]Phoebe[/name] is one of my favorites! Finally, last name is heavy on short vowel sounds so I think I am drawn to long vowel sounds in the first name. I don’t care too much about popularity, but I want to find that nice balance between “heard of” and “overused.”

My husband and I have not reached consensus on this yet – part of the issue is that we were 100% sure that [name]Leo[/name] was going to be [name]Zoe[/name] if he was a girl. We both love the name. However, I don’t think we can use [name]Zoe[/name] with [name]Leo[/name], because they are almost mirror images of the same name (say them together 10 times fast and by the third time it will be Loe and [name]Zeo[/name]). My husband still likes [name]Zoe[/name] and wants to use it. I am trying to keep an open mind, but I think the damage is done for me on that one.

My favorite is [name]Ivy[/name]. I think it’s a similar style to [name]Zoe[/name] but without any of the matching issues with [name]Leo[/name]. I don’t even care (that much) about the recent Beyoncification of [name]Ivy[/name]; I will not be naming my daughter any version of [name]Blue[/name], so I think we’re pretty safe. My husband doesn’t love [name]Ivy[/name]…I might be able to wear him down over the next few months but it would be nice to find something we both like.

Here’s a current list of names neither of us has completely vetoed. Names with asterisks are most likely middle name ideas.

[name]Beatrice[/name]*
[name]Clementine[/name]*
[name]Cara[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]June[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Vera[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]*
[name]Ramona[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] (mn [name]Pearl[/name]?)
[name]Eve[/name] (mn [name]Elizabeth[/name]?)
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name]*
[name]Nina[/name]

Any thoughts? Any names you think we might like but have overlooked? I was pretty sure it was going to be another boy (in which case he would have been [name]Simon[/name]) so the idea of thinking of a girl name is throwing me for a loop!

Thank you everyone.

[name]Eliza[/name] sounds perfect for you. I like your name list, especially [name]Cora[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], and [name]Nina[/name].

Thank you [name]Villette[/name]!

I should have mentioned some of the names that were ruled out for various reasons – I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Eliza[/name] but [name]Leo[/name]'s got a close first cousin named [name]Lilah[/name] and I’m trying to stay away from anything that sounds too close. This includes [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Maya[/name], another name I love.

[name]Sylvie[/name] is one that is really growing on me, maybe because it’s a similar-sounding name to [name]Ivy[/name] and I don’t think I can convince my husband on that one? Who knows?

I like [name]Zoe[/name] [name]Vera[/name], [name]Audrey[/name] [name]Willa[/name], [name]Nina[/name] [name]Florence[/name], or [name]Ivy[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name]. I think they have some flow to them. You have excellent choice in names!

My husband suggested both [name]Sadie[/name] and [name]Maisie[/name]…too juvenile/dog-name [name]IMO[/name], but I guess I can appreciate where he’s trying to go with them.

Thank you, dynamicfall! [name]Nina[/name] is one of those names where I wonder why it’s not more popular. I think it’s lovely.

I am in the same boat as you with Big brother [name]Leo[/name], but I like a full name and nickname.
From your list I love [name]Augusta[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name]. I also like [name]Cora[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Audrey[/name]. No matter what you pick she’ll have a great name from your choices!

goodkarma, fun to see another [name]Leo[/name] mama! I [name]LOVE[/name] a lot of your favorite names too…[name]Alice[/name] would be one of my top choices but my own name is [name]Alex[/name] and I think it would be too confusing. Thank you for your feedback.

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]! It seems absolutely perfect to me. [name]Ivy[/name] would be a fabulous choice as well. [name]Ivy[/name] [name]Ramona[/name], perhaps? Those stand out the most to me with [name]Leo[/name]. [name]One[/name] side note, [name]Leo[/name] and [name]June[/name] are both characters on Disney’s [name]Little[/name] Einsteins.

My friend who has a [name]Leo[/name], has a daughter named [name]Veronica[/name], which is rather pretty and not too popular.

[name]Leo[/name] is such a great name, I feel like almost any girl name you pick will go beautifully with it.
[Also, side note: [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Simon[/name] are my top boy choices, too. WONDERFUL TASTE ;)]

I agree with you on the [name]Zoe[/name]/[name]Leo[/name] combo being a little matchy and weird.

From your list, I like these best - in this order:
[name]Ivy[/name] (I hope you get your husband to change his mind… this would be perfect)
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Nina[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]Eve[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]

I looove [name]Leo[/name] as well. [name]Do[/name] you not want to use [name]Phoebe[/name] because of the pp intitials? I don’t think that is a big deal because you will have a middle name as well. Also it has an F sound instead of the alliterative P. [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] are fabulous together! I also like [name]Ivy[/name] and [name]Daphne[/name] with [name]Leo[/name]. Have you consedered [name]Celia[/name]? I love it with [name]Leo[/name] as well.

I don’t see why you couldn’t still use [name]Phoebe[/name]. Yes, it starts with a P, but it’s an F sound. I’m thinking [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Porter[/name], for example, sounds cute!

I love [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Aaron[/name] so your son’s name is swoon-worthy! From your list, I think these names would work with spunky [name]Leo[/name]!

[name]Cora[/name]
[name]June[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Vera[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Augusta[/name]
[name]Nina[/name]

My faves: (1) [name]Ivy[/name], (2) [name]Willa[/name] and (3) [name]Audrey[/name].

Other suggestions

[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Mora[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Eva[/name] (instead of [name]Eve[/name])
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Anna[/name]

Thanks everyone!

[name]Hazel[/name] is one we have talked about as a possibility but that I forgot to include on my original list.

I do like both [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Violet[/name], but they seem to be very trendy in this area (we’re in [name]Florida[/name]).

Re: the pp initials…I think I’m just extra sensitive to that – my maiden name also started with P and my brother’s initials are PP. And he did get a very hard time on that from kids when we were growing up. So I think if it hadn’t been for that, I wouldn’t care so much. I do think [name]Phoebe[/name] P. technically sounds fine because they are different sounds, but if I can avoid the PP I will.

boyandgirl, funny you mentioned [name]Celia[/name] bc it was my husband’s grandmother’s name so we have talked about it – perhaps we would use it as a middle name. Since we’re Jewish I think we’d probably not use the actual name and just choose a C name to honor her. I think that was where my thought with a name like [name]Ivy[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] came from.

Seems like most people here share my affection for [name]Ivy[/name]. Looks like I will have to really work on my husband. Ha ha, should be easy!

Thanks again for the suggestions.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Evie[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]?!

Otherwise, I love [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (way underused, imo) and [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. All such great names!
