A Boy named Peregrine

I’m looking for some feedback on [name]Peregrine[/name]. Does this seem masculine? Easy to understand? Does it seem cool, stuffy, handsome, just weird? [name]Do[/name] you make the connection to the [name]Peregrine[/name] falcon? No need to hate on it, though I am trying to get a “feel” for how it’s going to be taken.

Thanks for your thoughts and input.

Well, you already know I love [name]Peregrine[/name]. I think of the [name]Peregrine[/name] [name]Falcon[/name]. I know some people might mention LOTR, but unless they’ve read the book, most people don’t even know Pipin’s real name.

I think it’s strong and masculine and has a very obvious pronunciation. You get the nickname [name]Perry[/name] if you want it but i like it in it’s full. It sounds wonderful with the other kids and I would probably swoon if i met someone with this name too

LOL Yes, I knew I could count on you to love it. Nameberry calls it “foppish” though so that made me question what kind of reaction the little man will get. Two swooners are better than one though right? Haha!

I strongly dislike it for girls and boys. It doesn’t sound like a name [name]IMO[/name], even though it apparently is. It sounds like something you’d find in an olde tyme tool shed to me lol however I do like [name]Perry[/name].

I [name]LOVE[/name] IT! It goes really well with your other kids name. You could even call him [name]Pippin[/name]. It is really strong, handsome, but not over the top manly either. Go for it.

I’ve always thought [name]Peregrine[/name] was rather gorgeous for a boy, and I do make the connection to the bird but I think it’s a really majestic connotation. I think it goes really well with [name]Caspian[/name], Zephan and [name]Eve[/name] (lovely set!). [name]Quillon[/name]'s interesting (though I prefer [name]Quillan[/name]), but I think [name]Peregrine[/name]‘s nicer. I agree about [name]Percival[/name]; I love [name]Hugo[/name], and don’t see it as gruff necessarily, but I can’t really see it with your other childrens’ names.

In short, I think [name]Peregrine[/name]'s a great choice, especially if you con’t have a problem with unusual names.

[name]Just[/name] noticed, [name]Peregrine[/name] and [name]Quillon[/name] both relate to bird ([name]Peregrine[/name] being a bird of prey, and [name]Quillon[/name] containing “quill”). For what it’s worth, you might like [name]Wren[/name], [name]Altair[/name], [name]Phoenix[/name], [name]Vireo[/name], Rook, Condor, [name]Heron[/name], [name]Sparrow[/name], [name]Efron[/name], Avocet, Swift, [name]Finch[/name], Kestrel, [name]Fowler[/name], [name]Talon[/name] or [name]Weaver[/name]? All of which relate to birds in some way. I also thing the following would go well with [name]Caspian[/name], Zephan and [name]Eve[/name] - Propsero, [name]Nemo[/name], [name]Olivier[/name], [name]Prospero[/name], [name]Orrin[/name], [name]Sherlock[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Atticus[/name], [name]Merlin[/name], [name]Roan[/name], [name]Cesar[/name], [name]Indiana[/name], [name]Sullivan[/name], [name]Cornelius[/name] or Aslan. I realise you’re probably nearing the final stages of naming now and aren’t looking for suggestions, but just thought I’d give you something to ponder

EDIT: Having said that, I do hate the nicknames Perry and Reg. That’s just me though. I prefer Pen(n) or Rin(n), but those are more of a stretch.

I love the name and I know a peregrine and he could also go by the nn peri/perie

I think it’s very handsome and stylish

I agree. Its just a little bit too “out there” for me.

very cool old school name which goes well with your other kids’ names. sounds very english to me, no other connotations. nickname perry is super cute too.
hugo is sweet as well.

I want to like it! But I just can’t. It feels a bit fusty to me, and I have an anti-fust policy.
Also, I do think of [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings. Fool of a Took! I digress…
I absolutely adore the names of your other children. I know a boy named Zephan, so it doesn’t sound made up at all to me! [name]Caspian[/name] is on my list for adventurous boys. [name]Do[/name] you want all of your boys names to end with the “an/in” sound? Here are some suggestions that might match your taste:

[name]Ransom[/name] - I suggest this to everyone because it rocks, and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to use it myself.
[name]Orion[/name] - lots of interesting sounds at the turn, different yet not unheard of, very romantic and swashbuckling for sure
[name]Balin[/name] - somewhat plain, much more obscure lotr reference, means “sword”, not sure if the sound is what you’re going for
[name]Blaise[/name] - romantic and daring for sure, has history, not as many syllables as your usual fare, however I can see it going superbly with Zephan and [name]Caspian[/name]!

That’s all I’ve got! [name]Hope[/name] it helps!

I love [name]Peregrine[/name]. I also think it is stylish and dashing. I love it as it’s a bird name ( I’m a big fan of bird names), but also has that elegant British feel to it. I think it goes lovely with your other children.

I really like the nickname [name]Perry[/name], but [name]Peregrine[/name] sounds a bit feminine and like one of [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name]'s knights at the same time. Sorry.

I love [name]Peregrine[/name] and I think this name would make a great addition to your family that already includes [name]Caspian[/name], Zephan and [name]Eve[/name]. I think it’s aristocratic, sophisticated and quintessentially English. It has a light sound but it’s certainly not a lightweight in my opinion. It has a noble image mixed with a youthful flair. I quite like the falcon meaning too but I don’t know if many outside of the Nameberry community would know this fact. It would be a distinctive choice but I don’t feel it’s too “out-there” to use at all. Put me down as a swooner too!

[name]Love[/name] it! I echo [name]Mischa[/name]'s sentiments. It does remind me of the [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings character (who mostly went by [name]Pippin[/name]) . . . But I think it’s a positive connection . . . He was an inquisitive, brave, and loyal character. I’d use it in a heartbeat, eapecially since it goes swimmingly with your other children’s names.

Sorry, but I find [name]Peregrine[/name] to be really pretentious. It would just sound silly on a grown man. [name]Falcon[/name] would be much better.

I really like it (I think the LOTR and bird connotations are positive), although I have it firmly relegated to my guilty pleasures list!

Although the peregrine falcon does come to my mind, it doesn’t match up with how I see the name at all. I think it’s very stuffy, and it makes me picture some chinless, overbred, fop in tennis whites, one who never does a day’s work and whose lips are permanently curled into a sneer. I really, really dislike it. Sorry.

[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Peregrine[/name]. The above quote made me grin because a friend and I have a pact regarding men named [name]Peregrine[/name]. We made it when we were 15, but it still stands: if ever one of us meets a man named [name]Peregrine[/name], she must marry him instantly! I am married to a non-[name]Peregrine[/name], but whatever. I [name]LOVE[/name] this name for a boy! It’s unusual but not unrecognisable, has a bunch of cute nicknames, has “grin” in it so it makes me happy to hear it. And it ends with an ‘n’ sound like your other boys’ names. I do make the connection with the falcon, is that a bad thing?

I’m not a huge fan of [name]Quillon[/name], and though I love the look of [name]Aquilo[/name], I dislike that the middle sound is similar to “kill.” I like [name]Hugo[/name], but it lacks the uniqueness of his brothers’ names, same with [name]Pierce[/name], [name]Quade[/name] and [name]Percival[/name]. My two cents = [name]Peregrine[/name] is perfect for your family! I’m jealous, I’ll NEVER be allowed to use it.

What a great bunch of comments, Berries! Thank you. I printed everything off up to here for my husband and we were most entertained!

The comment about the chinless guy playing tennis all day was totally hilarious. I rather expected [name]Peregrine[/name] to be just too “out there” for many people but the comments are very helpful in getting an idea of what people think – and I was surprised to see several “swooners!” @phia, you win some kind of swooning gold star. LOL

I am indeed trying for a “bird” connection for this baby, preferably some kind of large bird. It’s a nod to a couple of heroes of mine that have a historical connection to birds so it makes me glad that the “bird” part is recognizable at least to some.

I’m definitely aware of the [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings connection but I didn’t mention it because I was wondering how many would bring it up. If [name]Peregrine[/name] is an automatic “LOTR name” then that would be too much, but we don’t object to it as an “additional” association. Maybe I should have asked though.

As for the –n ending, I don’t know that I’m particularly for or against it. Part of me would like to break it, but on the other hand -an simply works with our last name where many endings don’t (-er, -tt,- s) and as long as the name doesn’t feel like the only reason we picked it was because of the –an, I kind of like the “theme.” Delicate balance for sure though.

New suggestions are still welcome so thanks for those! I will go back and comment on the suggestions in a different message.
