Yes, “[name]Fey[/name]” does mean those things… but “[name]Fay[/name]” is a well-established name that doesn’t bring to mind any of those things. When someone mentions [name]Faye[/name] Dunaway, no one thinks of effeminate men/being doomed to die/acting crazy. It’s name all on its own. And women can be pretty awesome. Mythological deities, even better.

It’s been my experience that adults make far more of a ruckus over ‘name teasing’ than children actually do. They’re children, after all. They don’t know what a ‘normal name’ is. If it weren’t for parents’ comments, other kids wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Phaedra[/name], and [name]Luca[/name]. Certain kids will get picked on, regardless of their names. Sometimes it’s a [name]Christopher[/name] or a [name]Matthew[/name]. It has nothing to do with the name at all.

Really, unless you name your kid something ridiculous in this naming era like [name]Gaylord[/name] or [name]Dick[/name], you’ll probably be able to shirk name teasing entirely.

2 It sounds really feminine (first syllable sounds like the girls name [name]Faye[/name] and it ends in an “a” which is commonly a female ending (excluding some male names in the Bible and others).

This is interesting to me because I could definitely picture [name]Phaedra[/name] on a male.

I think it’s a great name on either gender, and it was bold of them to use a traditionally female name on their son. Sounds great with Astala too (which I also love!). I’m kind of obsessing over his middle names, Bloom and [name]Forever[/name], as well. Not everyone’s taste, but very cool I think.

[name]Don[/name]'t like it at all. There’s nothing “brave” about doing something that only affects another person. Renaming yourself something controversial could be brave but bestowing a controversial name on a child who has no say in the matter? Not brave at all. If anything, it’s selfish. The kid’s the one who’s going to have to deal with this name, not the mother. It would be like calling someone “brave” for outing a gay person (Oh how brave of you! You just made life difficult for someone else! However did you muster up the courage to do that?)

If you’re going to choose a girl’s name for a boy, use something that isn’t so feminine-sounding. [name]Phaedra[/name] has been a girls name for thousands of years. If you are going to do this, I recommend an unpopular name with little history that doesn’t, in most cases, end in A.

Well he won’t because everyone knows who his mum is.
I find it fine on a boy mostly because I’ve never heard it before and alos we go on about boys names on girls but when it happens the other we hate it just as much?? Anyway Astala and [name]Phaedra[/name] are really good together

I am the original poster. I reposted to offer my condolences on [name_f]Peaches[/name_f] Geldof’s tragic death. It upset me to hear that a young mother has died and left behind two young boys. There is nothing tasteless or inappropriate about that behaviour.
