A brother for Greta, Eloise, and Ira

We are days away from baby brother making his debut—and he is quite nameless! [name_f]My[/name_f] daughters are [name_f]Greta[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], and my other son is [name_u]Ira[/name_u] …

Any suggestions for names?

Right now our top contender is [name_m]Hal[/name_m], but we can’t decide if that would be his given name or a nickname for something else. I do like [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but don’t love how common it is paired with our very common last name.

Some other boy names we’ve tossed around:
[name_m]Enzo[/name_m]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] (an ancestor name) — perhaps he’d go by [name_m]Chas[/name_m]? [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe [name_m]Hal[/name_m]?
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] (but it’s too close to my daughter’s name [name_f]Eloise[/name_f])
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Zev[/name_m]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m]

Any other suggestions?!

Calvin nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u]?

Congratulations! If I’m being honest I dislike [name_m]Hal[/name_m] - it always reminds me of halitosis (sorry!) - but I adore [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. Yes, it’s common, but it’s such a timeless name and, in my opinion, more solid than the nicknamey [name_m]Hal[/name_m]. And, of course, you can still use [name_m]Hal[/name_m] as a nickname with it.

With your kids’ names, I personally think [name_m]Enzo[/name_m], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] or [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] would be brilliant. [name_m]Archie[/name_m] is also nice but very common where I’m from, which has affected my feelings about it. [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is nice too, although I still prefer [name_m]Henry[/name_m].

Welcome to Nameberry! You have chosen great names for your children and I’m sure you’ll find the perfect one for this little guy too. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourites on your list are [name_m]Archie[/name_m], [name_m]Zev[/name_m], and [name_m]Charles[/name_m] (like the nickname [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]). I think [name_u]Ari[/name_u] would fit your style but probably too close to [name_u]Ira[/name_u]? Maybe you would like…

Greta, [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_u]Ira[/name_u] are lovely names! I like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] the best from your list of options. How about [name_m]Hank[/name_m] as an alternative to [name_m]Hal[/name_m]? I’ve seen it used as a [name_m]Henry[/name_m] nickname as well as on its own.

I love [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] with your kids! [name_u]Ira[/name_u] is such a beautiful name btw and I wish I saw it more! Good choice.

I think [name_m]Hallam[/name_m] with the nickname [name_m]Hal[/name_m] works well! I like the idea of [name_u]Axel[/name_u] or [name_m]Felix[/name_m] with Ira :slightly_smiling_face:

Congratulations and welcome!

I adore the name [name_m]Hal[/name_m] :blue_heart: I think it works as a full name ([name_m]Benedict[/name_m] Cumberbatch has one) but how about [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] with [name_m]Hal[/name_m] for short as an alternative? I think [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] has exactly the same kind of cool, easygoing retro vibe as your other children’s names.

[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Archie[/name_m] seem to fit really well too – maybe also [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_m]Abel[/name_m], [name_u]Amos[/name_u], [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], Solomon “Sol” or [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]?

Hi there.

Your children’s’ names are just

Hal is cute w/your crew, but it does seem a bit nick-namey. I love [name_m]Henry[/name_m], but completely understand your concern w/the popularity. It seems like every little boy I meet is called [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_m]Harold[/name_m]? [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] maybe?

Enzo-It’s fun & spunky & quirky. A little exotic w/your crew, but not a deal breaker.

Charles [name_m]Henry[/name_m]-[name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] nn [name_m]Hal[/name_m] could work. I like [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. It’s dignified. I like [name_m]Charles[/name_m] nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u]. [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_m]Cab[/name_m]? [name_m]Chet[/name_m]? I don’t care much for [name_m]Chas[/name_m], but it’s unique. I do love [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], but I feel like [name_u]Cal[/name_u], [name_m]Cab[/name_m] or [name_m]Chet[/name_m] are way less popular.

Hugh-This is nice. I love [name_m]Hughie[/name_m]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you? It may be unavoidable.

Elliott-Yeah, it’s too close to [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. Great name though.

Luca-Aw, I love this. I think that it’s getting a tad popular, but maybe not too bad. It’s so artsy & romantic, but fairly simple.

Calvin-Yes, a little [name_u]Cal[/name_u] is a great alternative to [name_m]Hal[/name_m]. [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] is geeky in the best way & perfect w/Greta, [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] & [name_u]Ira[/name_u].

Theodore-[name_f]Awesome[/name_f] name, but I feel like it’s the next [name_m]Henry[/name_m].

Zev-I know a little [name_m]Zev[/name_m]. I like it a lot. It’s simple & completely unexpected. It’s smart & calm sounding, but kind of zesty (must be the ‘z’) at the same time.

Archie-Super adorable, but I think that it’s too nick-namey on its own. [name_u]Archer[/name_u] nn [name_m]Archie[/name_m] is good.

You have a lovely sibset!!

I think [name_m]Harlan[/name_m]/Harland “[name_m]Hal[/name_m]” “[name_m]Hank[/name_m]” would make an excellent addition

It’s so good! So tempted by [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u]. We have a few friends with little boys named [name_u]Cal[/name_u] and that’s my only hesitation!

Thanks for these thoughtful responses! I agree, I agree with what you said.

And thanks for the name suggestions! Almost all of those “A” names are specifically ones I have considered or are on my longer list!!
Really solid suggestions all around, I’m definitely going to spend more time combing through these!

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandfather [name_u]Ira[/name_u] had a brother named [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] [name_m]Burton[/name_m].

[name_u]Ira[/name_u]'s son’s names were

[name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u],
[name_m]Lloyd[/name_m] Renford,
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Edward[/name_m],
[name_u]George[/name_u] [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m],
and [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Leroy[/name_m]

Of your list, I love [name_m]Hal[/name_m], [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Zev[/name_m].

I think [name_u]Wallace[/name_u], [name_u]Gus[/name_u], [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], and [name_m]Lev[/name_m] / [name_m]Liev[/name_m] good be great additions

I love [name_m]Harold[/name_m] “[name_m]Hal[/name_m]” with [name_u]Ira[/name_u]!! Plus, you could call him [name_m]Roley[/name_m], which is so cute. I also like the suggestion of [name_u]Harland[/name_u].
A few more suggestions, because why not?

I actually like [name_m]Hal[/name_m] with your children’s names. [name_m]Hal[/name_m] is also short so it would match well with his brother. I think you could use [name_m]Harris[/name_m] or [name_u]Hollis[/name_u] or [name_u]Harley[/name_u] or even [name_m]Harlan[/name_m]!
In fact [name_m]Harlan[/name_m]/Hal would get my vote.
