A brother for Magnolia

Hello!!

DH and I just learned that we are expecting a little boy! This will be our second, following his big sister [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

We are thrilled to know we have a little dude on the way…except that, for us, boy names are MUCH harder to agree on and we’re having trouble choosing a name for this babe (all we’ve agreed on so far is his middle name: [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]). We want something relatively unique or uncommon, without being too “off the wall”

Here are the names we’ve discussed and the issues we might have with them. We would [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] to hear your advice on these or other names for this little one, please help us out!!

[name_m]Asher[/name_m] : my favorite boy name ever since I read The Giver in 5th grade. My biggest issue is how popular this name has become lately…I don’t know if I can get over its popularity.

[name_m]Booker[/name_m]: we both think this is a cool name…but it can sound like Booger if not careful and that is stuck in my brain.

[name_m]Otto[/name_m]: one we are both lukewarm on - I do think it sounds handsome and strong, but DH is not so sure.

And…that’s it :sob: please offer any advice or name ideas you have, we are open to all suggestions!

First thing that came to mind was [name_m]Crispin[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] “[name_m]Kip[/name_m]”

[name_m]Winston[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_u]Wallace[/name_u]*"[name_u]Wally[/name_u]" [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is gorgeous, it’s going to be hard suggesting a name that’ll live up to that it’s stunning.

[name_m]Asher[/name_m]: well [name_m]Asher[/name_m] is a gorgeous name but maybe a longer form would combat the popularity worries fit with [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. The only one I can think of is fairly popular as well: [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], or super weird, Ascarik. On second thoughts, I have [name_u]Ash[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], might be a stretch for you but I think it could work.

Other [name_u]Ash[/name_u] names I think would suit [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and are less popular as [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and Ashwin, especially Ashwin, I had a school friend with this name and he said his name meant bright star or light, I’m not sure if it’s correct but that would be a nice tie in with [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

Or, maybe a less intuitive nickname for [name_m]Asher[/name_m] like [name_m]Ace[/name_m] would make it more appealing.

[name_m]Booker[/name_m]: I have a blocked nose at the moment and booger is definitely what I’m saying. It is a really cool name but maybe something like [name_m]Brooker[/name_m] or [name_m]Beckett[/name_m] would work better.

On the theme of bookish things, maybe: [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_f]Saga[/name_f], [name_f]Journey[/name_f], [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_m]Quill[/name_m]/[name_m]Quiller[/name_m], [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]…

[name_m]Otto[/name_m]: [name_m]Otis[/name_m] could be an alternative, but it’s not my fave for your set. I could also see it working as a nickname for something like [name_m]Octavio[/name_m] (or variants like [name_m]Ottavio[/name_m], [name_m]Octavius[/name_m]) or [name_m]Othello[/name_m]

In terms of names of a similar style, this article had [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Booker[/name_m] and [name_m]Otto[/name_m] as either a name or suggestion so maybe you could get some inspiration from there https://www.babygaga.com/20-unexpected-baby-boy-names-that-are-super-cute/2/?v=8

I will suggest [name_u]Finn[/name_u] or a [name_u]Finn[/name_u] name like [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Finnian[/name_m], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] or [name_u]Finley[/name_u] though, I think it bridges the gap between all 3 of your names and works really well with [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f].

Seconding:

[name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] “[name_u]Cal[/name_u]”
[name_m]Cassius[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] (or [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] or [name_m]Cassian[/name_m]… and the nickname [name_u]Ash[/name_u] or [name_m]Asher[/name_m] could be used)
[name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] “[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]”
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] “[name_u]Finn[/name_u]” [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is lovely and you have a nice list going for your son. I really like [name_m]Booker[/name_m] and [name_m]Otto[/name_m]! You may be overthinking it because in real life, others won’t think of booger if he is named [name_m]Booker[/name_m]. Although it isn’t a name that is common so they may not be familiar with it but you just have to tell them once and all should be good!

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is STUNNING! I love it!

Okay, out of all your names, my favorite is [name_m]Asher[/name_m] ( I love The Giver too…).

What about-

[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_u]Remington[/name_u]
[name_m]Beckett[/name_m]

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] or [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]?

While [name_m]Asher[/name_m] is somewhat popular, it seems like the name you love most from the ones you’ve considered, and honestly goes with [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] the most.a name you truly love is more important than it’s popularity. And honestly I think [name_m]Asher[/name_m] is going to start dipping back down again soon, and will likely level out a tad lower on the charts than it’s current spot at 59.

[name_m]Booker[/name_m] works well with [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] too, and I really don’t think it sounds too much like booger. It may only be 1 letter difference, but k is such a strong sound that I don’t think it’s a problem.

Something else to keep in mind, while you are concerned about the popularity of [name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is much more popular than [name_m]Booker[/name_m] and climbing fast. [name_m]Booker[/name_m] isn’t even in the top 1000 where [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is currently at 384, up from 976 just 5 years ago.

[name_m]Otto[/name_m] is a fine name but feels a little out of place with [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] despite being closest in proximity out of your options to her on the charts.

Here are a few suggestions. I tired to consider names that feel like a brother to [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] while also trying to find names similar in popularity (not too popular or too out there.)

[name_m]Clark[/name_m]
[name_u]Leland[/name_u]
[name_m]Fabian[/name_m]
[name_u]Ashton[/name_u] (seconding pps suggestion)

[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]
[name_m]Winston[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m]
[name_u]Reed[/name_u]
[name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
