Totally inspired by leafygreens.
I recently made over my UC to include only names I would really use, including some tentative double-middle names. I thought I’d explain my choices here just for fun! (and because I really, really don’t want to do my homework…)
Margaret Alice Ruth “Margie”: Two honor names, one for my grandmother and one for my great-grandmother (opposite sides.) Ruth is not an honor, but I’ve always loved the name. I am not a religious person, but I was raised Christian and Ruth is a figure I’ve always loved. I tend to not like nicknames as full names, and Margie Alice Ruth doesn’t flow as well as Margaret. My grandmother was just Margie, but Margaret nn Margie flows better, in my opinion.
Annette Frances: more honor names. Annette was my mother’s middle name, and I quite like it. My middle name is Francis, which is kind of weird, I guess, but Frances is actually a name I’ve always loved, and it’s for my great-aunt.
Magda Juliet: no honors here! I like Magdalena, but it’s too long for my tastes (and what if she ended up going by Lena?) Magda is charming and short, and is one of those “old lady names” that deserves a comeback. Juliet is very feminine and soft, in my opinion, and offsets the clunky consonant sounds in Magda.
Colombe Lenore: Colombe is a lovely name, and taken from a song I really love. Lenore was my g-grandmother’s middle name, and although I only met her once (as a baby,) she’s been a role model, in a way, throughout her life.
Eugene David Charles “Geno”: Eugene is such a nice name. I love the way it looks and sounds-- it might be my favorite name ever. I think Geno is a more fresh and modern take on Gene. David is my father, and Charles is my grandfather. I may never use Charles, if my uncle were to have a son, but that seems unlikely. My father has a family name for his first name that’s been in use for 3 generations, so I’m leaving that for my brother, but he goes by David.
John Ludoviko “Vic”: John is nice and classic and strong. Ludoviko is sort of an out-there choice, but it’s an honor name for Ludoviko Lazaro Zamenhof, a man whose constructed language has a huge influence on my life. I don’t know if I would really use Vic as his nickname, but in theory, it’s cute!
Lawrence Clark: A family name and a name I just like. Lawrence has been used pretty frequently on both sides of my family tree, but not in recent years. I like Lawrie as a nickname, but Lawrence is nice on its own.
Charles Ransom: Yes, I already used Charles, but it fits so well with Ransom! Ransom is another family name from my father’s side, and is unique but classic. Charles is from my mother’s side, and offsets the weirdness from Ransom.
I guess I’m lucky that I like “classic” names-- I have a ton of honors in here. I’m also lucky that I like my family enough to name kids after them. The only two I’m really likely to use are Margaret Alice Ruth and Eugene David Charles, but it’s fun to imagine otherwise.
