So funny…when I heard the word reverie for the first time as a young kid, I had a strong desire to name my future daughter Reverie! I thought it would honor my brother [name]Reeve[/name], and it’s such a beautiful word with an equally beautiful meaning. It’s pretty much perfect, especially when paired with [name]Alice[/name]. Wow, what a beautiful name. So many of the names listed on this thread are on my list of “guilty pleasure names” (AKA any names my husband would immediately throw out, lol). I absolutely love [name]Sonnet[/name], [name]Hero[/name], and [name]Amaryllis[/name] (that one in particular is probably the most flexible) as girls’ names, and [name]Hawthorne[/name] and [name]Cobalt[/name] for boys. You are so lucky that you and your partner are both passionate about unique, interesting names. I can’t wait to hear what you eventually choose!
Hello!
I was just saying over on YCII that prior to knowing that blogger, Girl’s Gone Child, was pondering the name Reverie, I thought that we were the only family out there to have used the name. We used it as a middle name. Our older daughter’s middle name is [name]Plum[/name], so naturally, I think those go nicely together.
I thought I would link you to some discussions with lists of great names of a similar taste and feel. On the blog, You Can’t Call It It, we were brainstorming to come up with great twin names for a family who loves word names, the family from the blog Girl’s Gone Child. I’m going to link you to both discussions on YCII, and one on GGC. I would say that on the GGC post you need only read her post b/c she isn’t really asking for suggestions, but on the two YCCII posts the comments are important for gaining more name ideas b/c we’re all specifically trying to come up with names like Reverie or that might go nicely with it.
I will add that my current favorite boy’s word-name is [name]Fleet[/name], and I think it sounds so yummy with Rev. I also love Vetiver for either sex, depending on how you pronounce Reverie. We pronounce it with only two syllables here, rev-[name]REE[/name]. I think a two syllable name sounds better with a one, three or four syllable name next to it. I comment under my first name, [name]Kristen[/name], on the above blogs, and most of the word names I suggest are ones I would place next to my own kids names… most… not all, but since we both fell in love with Reverie, perhaps our tastes will converge again. All of this said, I do think Reverie sounds name-like enough (it really should be a name more so than other word-names) that it goes well with non-word names ([name]Leopold[/name] and Reverie, [name]Clio[/name] and Reverie, [name]Daisy[/name] and Rev, etc,) so use what you love. It’s possible that using two literature/poetry/music word names might end up feeling like dipping into the same bag of tricks, or it may feel totally natural. [name]Don[/name]'t feel like Reverie needs another word name with it, but then there are so many word names that would be lovely with it, too.
I love love love the idea of putting [name]Dorothy[/name] as a middle with some other yummy name, or even up front with a word-name middle–then the sibs have a similar theme without the order being exactly the same. I [name]ADORE[/name] [name]Dorothy[/name] [name]Dulcet[/name] (nn [name]Dottie[/name], [name]Thea[/name], [name]Doro[/name], all of which sound great with Rev…which is the most awesome nn in the entire world, really.) And cheers to you for naming your children just as you see fit. For people who balk at using these names (particularly with other people’s kids???,) I’m sure people were doing the same thing at first hearing [name]Rose[/name], [name]Lilly[/name], and [name]Daisy[/name] long ago. No one bats an eye at [name]Hunter[/name], but gasps at [name]Thatcher[/name]; a man named Larkspur or [name]Hawthorne[/name] is cruelly named, but [name]Linden[/name], [name]Oliver[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name] are okay…really? (not to mention the host of traditionally male names being used on girls without anyone having a negative reaction.) Best of luck to you and your partner in naming your second child; it’s sure a bit more challenging as it goes along!
Ok so I’ve scanned through all of the comments on this thread and I can’t believe that no one has suggested [name]Temperance[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] this name. It’s a word name (which is my favorite kind) and I think it’s beautiful with Reverie. I think a lot of people think it’s too “buttoned up” with the meaning “moderation”. But the way I look at it is that my husband and I have been a little wild and crazy in our past and I plan to share some of those experiences with my child eventually. I want to let her know that it’s OK to let loose, but moderation is a good idea in ALL things. I really don’t see anything wrong with the meaning. I’d have a harder time naming my child [name]Mary[/name] (bitter) or [name]Malorie[/name] (luckless).
As far as a boy goes, I’m not as good at coming up with word names. I do think [name]Sterling[/name] would sound really good with Reverie though. And I love the meaning of [name]Sterling[/name], “little star”.
Good [name]Luck[/name] and Congrats!
Ohhhhhh! [name]How[/name] I hope you go with [name]Hawthorne[/name]!!! I wanted a [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Jameson[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] but ended up with a [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Jameson[/name] Brave. [name]Hawthorne[/name] and [name]Sonnet[/name]!!! [name]Sonnet[/name] is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. I hope you go with either of those two! And Reverie is beautiful by the way.
Reverie [name]Alice[/name] and
[name]Hawthorne[/name] [name]William[/name] or [name]Sonnet[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
Reverie-3 [name]Alice[/name]-2
[name]Sonnet[/name]-2 [name]Rosalie[/name]-3 , I think they work so well together.
I’m going to randomly throw out the name [name]Django[/name] for a boy. I don’t know if you know the musician but I love his music and it’s so fullof life and has that artsy flavor I think you’d like. It’s Romani (gypsy) for “I awake” which I think it a lovely multi-level meaning.
And for a girl I’m going to suggest [name]Wren[/name], just because it’s one of my favorites.
I’m sorry for this but when I hear [name]Fleet[/name], despite liking it as a name, as a nurse I can only think of [name]Fleet[/name] Enemas. lol sorry.
I love this thread and many of these names are stunning. I think Reverie [name]Alice[/name] is just gorgeous.

I am just loving this thread!!! [name]Hawthorne[/name] is has been my #1 guilty pleasure for a few years now and I would just love, love, love to hear that someone really used it. It’s amazing. I also really like Lumi and Meridian from your list and love [name]Plum[/name] and [name]Hyacinth[/name] from the original list. I’ll just break out my guilty pleasure list and see if anything works.

Wow! Thanks so much for the continued replies. We’ve been out of town or I would have replied sooner. My partner and I were officially married last weekend (we live in NYS) and have been on a honeymoon of sorts with Rev for the past few days
But I was so glad to come back and see all these responses. I’ll try to reply to all of them!
Jayjoh- I thought I was the only one! I remember hearing words all the time growing up that I thought would make great names (Reverie being one of them!)” I can”t remember many, but I do remember naming my dolls after crayon colors, there was [name]Aqua[/name], [name]Turquoise[/name], [name]Cerulean[/name], [name]Magenta[/name], [name]Lilac[/name].
Kgbubble ” I love that you used Reverie! I thought we were the only ones to even consider it, but now I”m seeing that”s not the case, and it”s actually oddly comforting! We almost put in the middle, but she really came out looking like a Reverie, so it stuck. Thank you for those links. I read the blogs and many of the comments. The conversation there looks fascinating so I”ll definitely be reading there more often. I actually am familiar with GGC, she”s one of my favorite bloggers out there. Her kids have such fantastic names. I”ve been crushing on the name [name]Fable[/name] thanks to her, but probably won”t use it because I feel like I ”know” her [name]Fable[/name], even though of course I don”t. The wonders of the Internet. We pronounce Reverie as three syllables (rev-er-ee or rev-uh-ree). And I”m totally with you on Reverie sounding more like a name than a word. It”s why I”ve been digging Talisman for a boy. Because it just sounds like a name. I”m also with you on [name]Dorothy[/name]. It”s one of my favorites for a lot of reasons ([name]Wizard[/name] of [name]Oz[/name], [name]Parker[/name], it”s just pretty). I”d be more inclined to use it as a middle, as it feels expected, and I love names to be unexpected. And also it kind of rhymes with Reverie. But as a middle it”s fantastic. I think maybe we”re brain twins.
Caty-beth ” I love your reasons for loving [name]Temperance[/name]. It”s a great name. And a strong one, at that. My partner and I are a lot like you and your husband (what with the wild and crazy past and children to explain it to ?), and part of the reason we loved the name Reverie was because we were both daydreamers growing up. Back to the topic of [name]Temperance[/name] though, my partner is hard to sell on traditional virtue names. She just ”doesn”t like them.” I think it”s because she grew up a self proclaimed non-conformist in a very traditional home and went to Catholic school and there”s something very traditional and puritanical about virtue names. Also, her sister”s name is [name]Charity[/name] [name]Anne[/name], so that might have something to do with it.
grace.kasten - [name]Hawthorne[/name] is currently one of our favorites! But I also love Brave, and it’s so cool that you got to use it!
neuilly - [name]Django[/name] is really interesting. I’m familiar with the musician, and the sound is great. I’ll definitely bring it up to [name]Daisy[/name].
entangler - Thanks for your suggestions! From your list I love [name]Bronte[/name] (definitely considering it as a middle), [name]Andromeda[/name], [name]Calypso[/name] and [name]Alouette[/name]. I looked up [name]Alouette[/name] and it means “songbird” in French, which I love with Reverie, so this may be a winner! From the boys list, I’ve always had a thing for [name]Achilles[/name] but sadly I think the “kill” sound is too strong
I do love Guilliver, [name]Adonis[/name], and [name]Orion[/name]. Also, I love [name]Artemis[/name] and [name]November[/name], but for girls.
author in writing - Thanks! I like many of the names you listed, but one that caught my attention was [name]Holmes[/name]. I think it’d make a really cool middle for a boy!
saramee - Lullaby is so cool! I’ll have to read the thread where it was discussed. Perhaps better as a middle, but still cool. Also it’s funny you mention [name]Laramie[/name], it’s a name we’ve been considering very strongly for either gender. It holds a lot of significance in the LGBTQ community and has gained recognition via the [name]Laramie[/name] Project, so we’re thinking about using it either as a first or middle.
anniebee - Haiku and [name]Rhapsody[/name] are awesome! [name]Haven[/name]'t heard those suggested yet, I don’t think. Adding them to the list! Thanks!
So I definitely need to sort through names and put together some official lists, talk them over with [name]Daisy[/name] and see what happens! I’ll definitely be back for more input soon but for now are there any names standing out that really “go” with Reverie? I love hearing from you guys and thanks again! Sorry this was SO long!!
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Sonnet[/name] - like this
[name]Dulcet[/name] - too sweet for me
Gossamer - same as [name]Dulcet[/name], what nns Goss, [name]Sami[/name]?
[name]Fable[/name] - not sold on this
[name]Hero[/name] - like this
[name]Bliss[/name] - prefer [name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Kismet[/name] - no
Meridian (also like Meriwether) - it’s ok, but both are too close to [name]Meredith[/name]
[name]Circe[/name] - love love love this
Lumi - this is a name I’m using for my next daughter, but I live in Finland
[name]Amaryllis[/name] - this is pretty, but a bit of a tongue twister
Boys:
[name]Roux[/name] - don’t like this
[name]March[/name] - no
[name]Hawthorne[/name] - like this
[name]Legend[/name] - a big name to give a boy, lot to live up to
[name]Jazz[/name] - a bit cheesy
Larkspur - no, couldn’t use for a boy
Talisman - like this and [name]Taliesin[/name]
[name]Bayou[/name] - no
[name]Cobalt[/name] - too hard
[name]Heathcliff[/name] - bit of a loaded name
my faves are Lumi and [name]Circe[/name] and [name]Hawthorn[/name] and Talisman.
My two cents on [name]Alouette[/name]: It doesn’t mean songbird, it’s actually the word for ‘lark’ as in the bird. I think that can be lovely, but if you have an French kids around they’re going to know the song: Alouette (song) - Wikipedia . Most kids don’t know the background on it, but they know the words. Basically it’s about plucking apart an alouette, which for me is not a pleasing image for a daughter. If it doesn’t bother you that’s fine, but I wanted to make sure you knew before falling in love with it.
I love [name]Artemis[/name], and it sounds great with Reverie! I love for you guys: [name]Artemis[/name] Radicle (for the literal plant-root/nature meaning and the more modern connotations, which grew–hehe-- from it,) [name]Artemis[/name] [name]Dorothy[/name] Ballade, [name]Artemis[/name] [name]Rhapsody[/name] Brave, and [name]Artemis[/name] [name]Bijou[/name]. I Also love [name]Bijou[/name] [name]Dorothy[/name]. I love (for a boy) Berlioz [name]Hawthorne[/name], [name]Hawthorne[/name] Bravura, and [name]Hawthorne[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] Brave. Our first has only two names and our second has three, and it totally works; some are just done at two and others not.
Has anyone suggested [name]Poet[/name] nn [name]Poe[/name]? I think it could suit either a boy or a girl…
Reverie [name]Alice[/name] is lovely.
Hello!
[name]Kristen[/name] (daughter named Reverie, too) again. I won’t be commenting here anymore as kgbubble b/c I have a new blog who’s email address I’ll be using on these forums. I just wanted to let you know that I did my very first post on the name [name]Artemis[/name], and it might also be cool to feature you guys and your quest for a name! I’ll be profiling, for the most part, unusual names only. An entire blog of Reverie-esque names! Best of luck to you in your continued search. I hope we all get to hear the name when the time comes!
xoxo
