A few questions about my top two

My baby’s name will be [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I could avoid people [name_u]Nick[/name_u] naming either of these names?

Which do you personally like better

What imagine or perception do you have of this name or someone with this name

If you had to pick a nick name for each of these which would you pick

I think nicknames are avoidable if you simply introduce them by the full name and call them nothing but that. It’s still a possibility they may have friends who naturally shorten their name, but I still think that if someone is introduced as [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] rather than [name_u]Penny[/name_u] then she will be called [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].

I like both so much! If I had to choose…I think I like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] just a little bit more.

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is a sweet, sometimes shy girl who loves fairytales and playing with things like dolls, tea sets, etc. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is spunky, smart, and outgoing who likes to be outdoors and surrounded by friends. Idk, that’s just what came to mind.

[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] or [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. But I am like you. If I picked one or the other, I would just call them that instead of a nn.

Both are darling names and you can’t go wrong either way! What middles are you considering?

Re nicknames - I have the exact same preference and concern. I like full names, not nicknames, and wonder if it’s avoidable. I figure I will just correct people if they use nicknames and hope it works.
I like both your choices.

People will try and nickname almost any name, honestly! I think you can certainly be firm wth people and try and avoid it, but at the end of the day you may need to accept that some people will call her by a short form. The good news is that both names you’re considering actually have really nice nickname options ([name_u]Penny[/name_u], [name_m]Pip[/name_m], [name_f]Nell[/name_f]; [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Tilly[/name_f], [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] spring to mind). I’d use [name_m]Pip[/name_m] or [name_f]Nell[/name_f] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], personally.

My personal preference is for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] as a full name, but I like the nickname options for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] more (which is one of the reasons we put [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] in the middle for our daughter). [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] feels fun, lively and quirky to me, while [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] feels calmer, and more chic and sophisticated.

Both beautiful options - good luck!

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]

I personally like penny or poppy for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] if I used a nick name and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] or [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]

I agree with a lot of what @katinka said, except I greatly prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] to [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. My preferred nicknames would be [name_f]Nell[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilda[/name_f], and I much prefer [name_f]Nell[/name_f] to [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] as well.
I think it’s possible to avoid nicknames until the day your daughter decides she likes having one. Personally, I would rather get a head start on choosing which nickname she ends up with, than to suddenly have little [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] wanting to be called [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] when she could have been [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] if I had chosen to use it from the start. It’s not like you have to use it all the time.

People might try to give either one nicknames and all you can do is tell them you’d prefer that they use her full name. That said, she might choose to go by a nickname when she’s older and I’m sure there will be some stubborn people who will use a nickname anyways. I have been loving [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s clunky spunk lately and would love to use the name some day. I’d probably end up using the nickname [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] for her although [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] are both lovely as well. I like the sound of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] although it always makes me think of a pig. Was it Porky’s girlfriend’s name maybe? I do however love the nickname [name_u]Penny[/name_u] and I also really like [name_f]Nell[/name_f].

My baby’s name will be [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]

Much prefer [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. I find it really sweet. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] makes me think of a [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] Dragon I used to have, or something you’d name a horse or something.

I think if you were to use [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], itd be easy enough to avoid using a nickname, providing you always called her by her full name. I do however think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] would be easier to avoid the nickname. I like both [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] and [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]. [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] would be for a more tomboy, feisty girl, and [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] if she’s more girly.

I love [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]! But I don’t think I’ll ever use it because of the nickname thing. I feel like it’s too long of a name not to have a nickname. People are going to want to shorten it. I don’t think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] has that same problem. It has nickname potential, but it doesn’t HAVE to have a nickname. And it doesn’t have any one super intuitive nickname (like [name_u]Penny[/name_u] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]). I prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] as a full name, but if avoiding nicknames is super important to you I would choose [name_f]Matilda[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] better. Personally, I think it will probably be hard to stop people nicknaming them, but if you press it hard enough that her name is NOT to be nicknamed, then people might get it.

I think both names are cute. My Mom insisted on both my sister and I being called by our proper names. As I was growing up, I didn’t like the short version of my name, so continued on insisting on being called by my proper name. My sister, for the most part, did as well although the last few years there have been a few people that have called her by her short name. I asked her about that and she says she only lets close friends call her that. Growing up she would throw a tantrum if someone called her by the abbreviated name. So, insist on people calling them by their full name and then if they choose to shorten it later, let them.

I don’t think you can really stop nicknaming. You can call your child by their full name, and perhaps have some control over that when they’re younger, but over time it’s up to your daughter whether she wants to have a nickname or not.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I could avoid people [name_u]Nick[/name_u] naming either of these names?

  • No, I think any name that naturally leads itself to a nickname can’t be expected to never receive one, most likely from yourself

Which do you personally like better

  • My sister is [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] which I suggested so I do love and prefer [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] but like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], too

What imagine or perception do you have of this name or someone with this name

  • [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is a child who grows up in a house full of books, who loves to read and draw, cook and play piano; she’s a reserved yet not shy person who is very curious about the world and asks many questions but also tries to find out the answers on her own; she loves being outdoors in the woods looking at birds or search for trails of small animals, what she sees she puts down in her notebook

  • for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] I obviously have a realer image/ry, she’s smart, loves school and after a long day still likes to play school in the afternoon. She’s very kind, always makes sure that other kids are happy, a tad cheeky and mischievous, sometimes naughty, doesn’t always do what she’s told, has her own ideas about things, is very particular about certain things. She is quirky and bubbly, smiles and laughs a lot, loves to do play with her friends, have picnics outside, she has a big heart and is sensitive, understands a lot of emotions, gives hug and-cuddle-attacks, and has true passion for things she loves, wether it’s books, movies, art, shows, games, she’ll read or play or watches them over and over again (and will talk of little else).

If you had to pick a nick name for each of these which would you pick

  • [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] has been on my list in the past

  • my parents never picked a nickname and neither me nor my brother have one yet [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] ended up being called [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] a lot as it’s such a natural nickname; over the years she got many more nicknames from me, however, one nickname I always liked but that just isn’t her and never caught on is [name_f]Millie[/name_f].

I don’t think any name is nickname proof, and many people have nicknames unrelated to their given names. You can always refrain from using nicknames, but it’s pretty impossible to keep her friends from calling your daughter nicknames. I like [name_f]Nell[/name_f] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], but [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] lend themselves to multiple nicknames.
