A Fondness for Foster

I recently reread the Gone-Away [name_u]Lake[/name_u] books by brilliant children’s writer, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Enright, and fell in love with [name_f]Portia[/name_f]'s little brother, [name_m]Foster[/name_m].

In the book, he is my favorite sort of little boy: loves to play outside, is solid and cheery, and has a lively, curious personality.

I keep thinking that the foster child connection should bother me or the old comedian, was it [name_m]Foster[/name_m] [name_m]Brooks[/name_m]? whose shtick I seem to recall was pretending to be drunk. But these things just don’t bother me.

Instead I think of Enright’s [name_m]Foster[/name_m] and [name_m]Foster[/name_m]'s Freeze ice cream cones, a taste of summer. I think of fostering a good idea (or person). I find F names refreshing and I like the combo of the f, the s, the t, and the r.

What do you think? [name_m]How[/name_m] do you envision a [name_m]Foster[/name_m]?

PS [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Enright’s books are the BEST! They also contain many great names, including [name_m]Julius[/name_m], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_m]Tarquin[/name_m], Pindar, [name_m]Gulliver[/name_m], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f], [name_f]Mona[/name_f], [name_m]Rush[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Titus[/name_m], [name_m]Martin[/name_m], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Mab[/name_f], [name_m]Yancy[/name_m], [name_f]Garnet[/name_f], [name_u]Linden[/name_u], [name_u]Jay[/name_u], and [name_f]Belinda[/name_f]!

Aw, when I saw the title of your thread this is the [name_m]Foster[/name_m] I immediately thought of! The name’s not my cup of tea exactly, but I like the character, and [name_m]Foster[/name_m] would fit right into today’s surname trend while still being unusual.

And I do like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Enright. [name_m]Aren[/name_m]‘t the siblings’ frilly names in Gone-Away [name_u]Lake[/name_u] the best? Minnehaha [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], Pindar [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], Polyhymnia, and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Manfred[/name_m] [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] (nicknamed [name_u]Min[/name_u], Pin, Persy, [name_f]Polly[/name_f] and [name_u]Lex[/name_u])? Those should be enough by themselves to convince name nerds to read the book!

to find such an Enright fan! And yes, those names are convincers enough!

Well, needless to say I love [name_m]Foster[/name_m]. We have been TTC for over 3 years now with suspected PCOS and [name_m]Foster[/name_m] has been picked out as our boy name since the beginning. Hopefully I will get to really use it.

I love it because it’s handsome but soft and wise. I envision a sweet little boy who is very much all boy but sweet at the same time. It’s recognizable but not weird. I can’t put it into words but I am so in love with the name [name_m]Foster[/name_m]. It’s the one name I would be devastated to never use. It makes my heart flutter and makes me feel giddy inside. One day I will hopefully have my [name_m]Foster[/name_m].

be praying that you get your [name_m]Foster[/name_m]. It is rare to find such a boyish and gentle name that works equally well on a grown or even old man.

Best wishes,
[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]

I’ve never heard of the series but I’ll have to look into that. I’m always on the look out for great books for my [name_f]Lulu[/name_f].

I’ve never really thought much about [name_m]Foster[/name_m] but as soon as I read the title, I was like “Oh, I like”. I like the softer sound but the “-er” ending helps it from sounding too soft and/or girly.

I think [name_m]Foster[/name_m] is a great name and the positive connections you have to it make it even more special. I would go for it!

I know this post is very old but tonight I was searching the name [name_m]Foster[/name_m] and saw that I had commented here around this time last year. It is probably my pregnant hormones making me all emotional but reading my post above about the name [name_m]Foster[/name_m] and how I hoped one day I would have my [name_m]Foster[/name_m] made me a little teary eyed. I’m very happy and oh so thankful to be able to say that after 4 years of trying, a loss of twins in 2014 and with the help of fertility medication, I’m now almost 24 weeks pregnant with a little boy whose name is [name_m]Foster[/name_m]. Can’t wait to meet him. [name_m]Ah[/name_m] sorry again for bumping an old post.

I think it would be a fine name.

I love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Enright, especially the Saturdays! [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] were on my list

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

[name_u]Shilo[/name_u], congrats on the impending arrival of your [name_m]Foster[/name_m]…so glad you’ll have him!

I’ve been an Enright fan for decades, although it wasn’t until I was an adult that I found the Gone-Away [name_u]Lake[/name_u] books. My daughter also loves Enright’s stories; her faves are the Gone-Aways. Because of the Melendy stories I’ve been a fan of [name_m]Rush[/name_m] & [name_f]Miranda[/name_f] for a very long time.

I love this name, love these books, but I especially love to hear about much-anticipated miracle babies! Congratulations on your little [name_m]Foster[/name_m]!

[name_u]Shilo[/name_u], I’m soooo happy for you!

I really like [name_m]Foster[/name_m]! I think of the foster care connection a lot, but I don’t think it should bother you. It’s a great name.
