We are thinking about naming our daughter [name]Hampton[/name]. All of our friends love it but I need YOUR opinion…
[name]Ann[/name] [name]Hampton[/name] [name]Smith[/name]- call her [name]Hampton[/name]
Or
[name]Hampton[/name] ________ [name]Smith[/name]- help with middle name
If you’re going to call her [name]Hampton[/name], use that as her first name. She can always choose to use [name]Ann[/name] when she’s older but if you put that first you’ll forever be correcting doctors, teachers etc.
But it wouldn’t be my choice. It’s not my style and I think most ‘surname’ names are generally masculine-sounding.
[name]Ann[/name] is a family name but we do not have to use it. I just need a short feminine name to go with [name]Hampton[/name]. Suggestions welcome.
[name]Hampton[/name] is also a family name… It was my mothers maiden name. For some reason I can see a little dainty girl named [name]Hampton[/name]. But I want to back it up with a super feminine middle name.
Oooh. Really like these middles! [name]Hampton[/name] [name]June[/name] jumped out at me. [name]Hampton[/name] [name]Elise[/name] is good too. But any that strike your fancy are good.
I really only see [name]Hampton[/name] in the middle name position, Especially when that is a traditional place to see a family/maiden surname. It’s a hard name to wear because it sounds bad in a few different ways. First it sounds like undesirable words like Hamper hamster tampon. I can’t think of any nice sounding way to shorten the name. [name]Ham[/name]?
Then because it is associated with a place popular for wealthy people to summer it sounds like a place name.
I definitely prefer [name]Ann[/name] [name]Hampton[/name] over the other combinations.
Unisex names are not usually my style, but I like [name]Hampton[/name] for you! I would just skip over [name]Ann[/name] to make things less confusing, and go straight to [name]Hampton[/name]. [name]Hampton[/name] [name]Claire[/name] would be very pretty.
Ok, well since it is your mom’s maiden name I wholeheartedly love it in the first name spot! I think you need a classic name in the middle to ground it a bit.
[name]Hampton[/name] should so be the middle name. I like [name]Ann[/name] [name]Hampton[/name] but I agree if you use [name]Hampton[/name] as a first name she will get Hamster or [name]Ham[/name] not nice nicknames.
I would worry about [name]Hampton[/name] coming off as pretentious. It sounds like someone trying too hard at classy. Of course if it is a family name, I understand why you want to use it. But that probably won’t be people’s first thought.
[name]Hampton[/name] isn’t really my style, ad is strikes me as being overly masculine. Also, just as a heads up there is a weird, cowardly, male pig named [name]Hampton[/name] in the kids cartoon series “[name]Maggie[/name] and the Ferocious Beast”.
If I were you, I’d use a very feminine fn or middle name to balance it out and pray no kid in your daughters class watches that show.
[name]Hampton[/name] means something along the lines of ‘Home’ or ‘Home - settlement’ would you consider using something of the same or similar meaning as a way of honouring [name]Hampton[/name]?

[name]EDIT[/name] My bad, the pig was called [name]Hamilton[/name]. Sorry.
Let me guess, are you from the South? I am too, and masculine, surname names are very commonly given to girls in my hometown. I’ll be honest, it isn’t a trend that I love. However, as you said, your friends and the people around you will most likely love it, so I suppose that’s the important thing.
I do think it’s nice to honor your family in this way, but I think I prefer the family name in the middle so that she would at least have a feminine first name. [name]Ann[/name] [name]Hampton[/name] shares that vowel sound, but it’s not too bad. [name]Claire[/name] [name]Hampton[/name] is pretty.
I wanted to mention one other thing-- you said that you can picture a dainty little girl [name]Hampton[/name], and I see what you mean. But what if she doesn’t turn out to be so dainty? I don’t mean to be overly negative, but would you still love [name]Hampton[/name] for your little girl if she ends up being tall and gangly, athletically built, or a bit overweight? If you would, then go for it. I just think it’s important to choose a name that will fit and still be beautiful no matter who the child turns out to be!
I also assumed you were from the South, and if so, we know that a little [name]Hampton[/name] will fit right in with lots of other children who have family surnames as first names. Most people on NB aren’t familiar with the custom, so I wouldn’t let any negative opinions sway you. I think [name]Hampton[/name] has a nice, classy sound (I have known much weirder surnames used-and they worked). You are lucky to have such a great family name that hasn’t been poached by the surname-grabbers. [name]Both[/name] mine and my mother’s maiden names just sound trendy now.
I’m also from the South and quite used to hearing maiden names on girls (although in my area it’s much more common to hear maiden names on boys). One thing I hear often for girls is using the maiden name in a double first name like [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Stewart[/name] and [name]Maggie[/name]-[name]Banks[/name]. Perhaps you could use [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Hampton[/name]?
Here are some more middle name suggestions for [name]Hampton[/name]. Sorry for any repeats.
You guessed it. We are from the south! [name]Alabama[/name] and [name]Texas[/name]! I can not thank everyone enough for all the wonderful suggestions! [name]Even[/name] the negative things said were not rude just a good way to approach it from a different view.
I would use [name]Ann[/name] [name]Hampton[/name] as a double name. But I love all the middle name suggestions! My husband and I are going to ponder some of them this evening and let you know what we decide!
Thank you everyone so much! More suggestions welcome on first and middle names!
[name]Hampton[/name] is all male to me. I knew a man named [name]Hampton[/name], so that’s probably why. I can’t see it on a girl, but maybe that’s just me?
I think [name]Ann[/name] [name]Hampton[/name] is a better bet, because if she doesn’t like [name]Hampton[/name], she can always go with [name]Ann[/name]. Plus, people won’t automatically assume she’s a boy when they see “[name]ANN[/name].”
Not to be a [name]Debbie[/name] downer but I really don’t like [name]Hampton[/name]. As a MN, fine. But as a first name I just don’t see it. It just doesn’t sound like a name, or at least not a first name for a little girl. Its always going to be a place to me, not just because of the Hamptons but because I was always at [name]Hampton[/name] [name]Beach[/name], NH as a child. And then there is the nickname “Hammy” or “[name]Ham[/name]”, :/. Normally I am all for honoring, but in this case I think there are better options.
While not my style, I can see why [name]Hampton[/name] works for you. So, in light of that, and of your wishes to use it as a first name, here are my mn suggestions: (sorry for repeats)
