I am writing a story, and I need a lavish long mermaid name with a sweet and spunky nickname. I was going to have the name be [name]Magnolia[/name] [name]Opal[/name] [name]Primrose[/name], nickname [name]Nollie[/name], but I think [name]Magnolia[/name] seems a slight bit harsh. If it is of concern, the character will have white blonde wispy hair and pale skin. I looked through a lot of the nameberry lists, but didn’t find anything perfect. So, if you have an idea, I’d appreciate your thoughts! Thanks!
Seaflower
Iridessa
[name]Pearl[/name]
Aquamarina
[name]India[/name]
Cornsilk
Silvergold
Moonglow
Also if she’s a mermaid it makes more sense to stick to names either from the sea or sky or that aren’t objects, because how would she or her mother know what a magnolia or a primrose is if she’s never been on land? [name]How[/name] would she ever see opals? Maybe a neat story could be naming her after a ship, either a shipwrecked ship or a famous ship, like her mother saw the name on the ship or heard it and named her after that. The name Lusitania comes to mind, nn [name]Lucy[/name]. Fits the bill I think!
[name]Cordelia[/name] nn [name]Cora[/name] maybe? It means “daughter of the sea” too!
[name]Cordelia[/name] is nice! What about Sunrise, nn [name]Sunny[/name]?
[name]Just[/name] thought of four more -
[name]Azura[/name] - nn [name]Zuzu[/name]
[name]Mariana[/name] (like the Marianas Trench)
Periwinkle - nn [name]Perry[/name] or Wink
Meridia - nn [name]Merry[/name]
Yeah!! My first thought was [name]Cordelia[/name]. Maybe:
Moondance?
[name]Sundance[/name] nn [name]Sunny[/name] (thinking of betsy’s suggestion )
[name]Marina[/name] nn [name]Rina[/name], [name]Marie[/name], [name]Rin[/name] ( a bit obvious, I know.)
[name]Coralie[/name]/[name]Coraline[/name]/[name]Coral[/name] nn [name]Cora[/name]?
instead of [name]Opal[/name]: [name]Pearl[/name]?
~[name]Jasmine[/name]
[name]Noelani[/name]? A Hawaiian name meaning “heavenly mist.” You could still use the nickname [name]Nollie[/name].
Thank you for all the suggestions!
betsy buttercup: When I was little, I might make up names like Seaflower or others and pretend I was a mermaid so now, they seem too juvenile for me. But they are magical and sweet! Thanks for the suggestions, I like [name]India[/name]. And, I see your point about the name. Maybe, a long time ago, a human traveled there and described the outside world. That might work? And I like Periwinkle, it’s actually been my favorite color since I was four and watched [name]Blue[/name]'s Clues. Maybe Periwinkle could be her last name.
leosma: [name]Cordelia[/name] is actually the name of the ship in the story! And I’m sorry, but I’ve never seen the appeal of [name]Cora[/name]. Seems a bit dark. But thank you!
jasmine.lee: Same as above with sun and moondance, sorry. [name]Marina[/name] is nice, but yes a little obvious. And the same thing with [name]Cora[/name]. Thank you though!
hilary: I’m looking for something a bit less exotic, sorry. But thanks still!
I do like the idea of [name]India[/name] [name]Opal[/name]/[name]Pearl[/name] Periwinkle.
~[name]Jasmine[/name]
[name]Aspen[/name]
[name]Diana[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
Hawaiian/island names are a good idea actually, and you could explore the names of islands like [name]Tahiti[/name] or [name]Bali[/name] or [name]Samoa[/name], but I see what you mean about [name]Noelani[/name] being too exotic. What about either Plumeria or Frangipani, which are different names for the same tropical tree flower? They make leis out of them and they smell absolutely gorgeous. It’s more plausible that a mermaid might encounter a tree at the shore of an island, versus the extremely English inland [name]Primrose[/name] or the inland southern [name]Magnolia[/name]. Or they might find leis floating in the water, I know they throw leis in the ocean sometimes. Frangipani could be [name]Frannie[/name], Plumeria could be [name]Plum[/name]. Plumeria [name]Pearl[/name] Periwinkle, [name]India[/name] Aquamarina Periwinkle, sound like mermaid names to me!
I don’t think a human coming in and describing the entirety of the land world is plausable, because that’s what would have to happen to have not one but three land-based names in there. He’d have to live with the mermaids for years to mention all three of those things at some point. Here’s a scenario that might work if you want one of the land names, which I think is the most that would be plausable - the mermaid’s mother met a ship captain whose daughter or wife or betrothed was named _______. I think of those three names, [name]Primrose[/name] sounds the most like the relative or land-based love of a ship captain.
Here are a few for you to look at;
[name]Morven[/name] (Child of the sea)
[name]Marina[/name]
[name]Nixie[/name] ([name]Little[/name] water sprite)
[name]Meriel[/name] (Shining Sea)
Siren
[name]Shelly[/name]
Mairin ([name]Star[/name] of the sea)
[name]Morwenna[/name] (White sea)
Sagara (Sea)
[name]Thalassa[/name] ([name]Ocean[/name])
[name]Azure[/name] (a blue colour, could represent the sea)
[name]Cliona[/name] (She was a goddess who fell in love and ran away with a mortal, but the god of the sea sent a wave to pull her back.)
[name]Hope[/name] these helped!
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions!
I agree with you, betsy buttercup, but I’m really not delving too deep into how she was named. It’s only a little fantasy story. Maybe the ship captain used to tell a certain story involving whatever human objects I use as names. Thank you for all the thoughts, I appreciate it!
bethlow: I really love [name]Nixie[/name] and [name]Thalassa[/name]!
I just found two more possible names, maybe [name]Tansy[/name] or [name]Isolde[/name]. Does anyone think [name]Thalassa[/name] nn [name]Tansy[/name] works? And any ideas for a full name for [name]Nixie[/name]?
I really liked [name]Nixie[/name] and [name]Thalassa[/name] out of the ones I chose, I never thought of the nn [name]Tansy[/name], but it works so well! I love it. I also like [name]Posey[/name], I didn’t know if it suited a mermaid.
