A middle name for Wallace?

This weekend my husband and I had more time to talk about names than we had so far this pregnancy, and I think we finally made some progress… or at least verified that some of our prior top contenders wouldn’t work as firsts for various reasons.

One name that we (somewhat surprisingly) agree on, more so than we have on any thus far, is [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]. Like, my husband is game to set [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] in stone as the first name. I don’t know if I am quite that set on it yet, but it has really grown on me and I’m starting to love it.

First, what are your honest opinions on [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]? What impressions does it give you? Are there any bad associations we aren’t thinking of? I know there’s Wall-E thé robot, but my husband says that doesn’t bother him… despite that being his reason for vetoing it the first time I ever mentioned it.

Second, is [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] too similar to brother [name_m]Warren[/name_m]? I feel like even though they are both W names, they sound different enough. More different than [name_m]Warren[/name_m] and [name_u]Arden[/name_u], which we had considered at one point. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_m]Warren[/name_m] and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] would make an okay sibling set?

Third, if you think [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] is usable as a first name, we need middle name suggestions to go with it! I jotted down a few combos, but we were traveling in the car so I didn’t put too much thought into them or review them yet.

Your input is always helpful!

Last name is 3 syllables, starts with St-, ends in -er, has an o in the middle.
Brother is [name_m]Warren[/name_m] [name_m]Patrick[/name_m].

————————

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] - I wouldn’t use [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] as a first, personally. But I actually love how it sounds with [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]? I’m worried it might be “too much” though?

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Ames[/name_u] - have to include this because I still love [name_u]Ames[/name_u] even if my husband does not :joy:

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] - [name_u]James[/name_u] is technically my husband’s step-dad’s name, even though he goes by [name_m]Jim[/name_m]. And I think it just works nicely as a middle for a lot of names, not sure it flows great with [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] though.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Archer[/name_u] - my husband threw [name_u]Archer[/name_u] out, not sure I love it.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] - If you’ve seen my hundreds of [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] posts, you know I love [name_u]Finch[/name_u] as a middle name. Don’t know why, I just do. I want to use it as a middle so badly, but I’m not feeling it with [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]?

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Graham[/name_m]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - I think we finally concluded that [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] would not be a first name contender for us anymore, so including it as a middle.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] - same as above.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Van[/name_u] - [name_f]My[/name_f] maiden name is VanAntwerp, and I legally changed my middle name to VanAntwerp when we got married. Our first son shared a middle name with my husband and father-in-law. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband thinks it would be cool if [name_u]Van[/name_u] was the middle name so that this child would have a middle name connection to me. Also, my paternal grandfather went by just [name_u]Van[/name_u] primarily. Though, his actually name was Warren… which is our first son’s name. I don’t know if that would be weird to have two kids somewhat named after the same person? [name_m]Even[/name_m] though this one would be more so named after me? [name_f]My[/name_f] husband also suggested we use the full VanAntwerp as the middle on paperwork and then could call him [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Van[/name_u]? Would that be a massive burden on the poor kid?

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Vaughn[/name_u]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Finnegan[/name_u] - for some reason I like how this sounds with our last name

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Declan[/name_u]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Olson[/name_m]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] - we both really like [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] as a first name but decided against using it as a first for several reasons

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Scott[/name_u]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] Ray/Rae - my Dad’s middle name is Ray; my mom’s middle name is [name_f]Renee[/name_f]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] - You have probably seen loads of posts from me loving [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] [name_u]Ames[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is fully against [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] as a first, but he actually suggested [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] as a middle for [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] and I think I like the way it sounds. I would also love to get the meaning of [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] somewhere in the name.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Webb[/name_m] - [name_m]Webster[/name_m] was a contender early on. [name_m]Webb[/name_m] is a family name on my husband’s step-dad’s side.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Gibson[/name_m] nn [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] Gibs

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Malcom[/name_m]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Kipton[/name_m]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Enzo[/name_u]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Oslo[/name_m]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Amos[/name_u]

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Fenton[/name_m]

I really like [name_u]Wallace[/name_u], and it fits well with [name_m]Warren[/name_m]. Besides the obvious same beginning letter, they don’t feel too similar to me. [name_m]Warren[/name_m] and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] together feel geek-chic – both familiar surname-turned-firstnames, but haven’t hit a resurgence in popularity.

[name_f]My[/name_f] main associations with [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] are [name_u]William[/name_u] [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] / Braveheart and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] and Gromit, which are both positive-neutral associations. [name_f]My[/name_f] only negative association is [name_u]George[/name_u] [name_u]Wallace[/name_u], a former [name_f]Alabama[/name_f] governor who was well known as a staunch segregationist in 1960s. I don’t think that’s a dealbreaker at all (especially if you don’t live in the southern US), but I figured I’d mention it. And I think Wall-E is actually a cute connection!

I love the idea of [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Van[/name_u] or [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] VanAntwerp – that is absolutely my first choice! Maiden names as middle names are quite common in my area, so I don’t think it’s too burdensome at all! I would think of it as a honor for you, rather than another honor for your grandfather. I also like [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] (very Scottish, though!), and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. I don’t love [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] paired with another name ending in an ‘s’ sound or starting with an ‘s’ sound, as it gets a bit hissy for me.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] is cool - clunky and a bit rough and tumble, but with an edge of elegance and regalness too.

For me, [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] and [name_m]Warren[/name_m] are a bit similar and while I wouldn’t personally do it, they’re not completely and unusably close. Maybe you could do the nickname name ‘Ace’ or something to differentiate them?

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Ames[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Vaughn[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Finnegan[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Declan[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Gibson[/name_m], and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] are all great!! [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Declan[/name_u] is my fave though.

A few that came to mind: [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Franklin[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Ren[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Maxwell[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Anton[/name_m]

I really love [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]! I cant think of any bad associations. The only thing that comes to mind is the alrrady mentioned Wall-e (though personally I would probably use [name_u]Ace[/name_u] over [name_u]Wally[/name_u] as a nickname, though [name_u]Wally[/name_u] is cute too) and [name_u]William[/name_u] [name_u]Wallace[/name_u].

I think it works as a brother for [name_m]Warren[/name_m] the only similarity ia the first letter.

From your middles my favorites are…

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Van[/name_u]
[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]

I love [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]. I think of [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] and Gromit, which I adore. And I think [name_u]Wally[/name_u] is darling nn.

I would avoid all middle names that start with S sound so the names don’t blur together.

I actually really like [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]. I named my first car [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] because at the time I was at university studying geography, and I learned about the [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_f]Line[/name_f] - Wallace Line - Wikipedia - which is now my main association with the name.

It’s a little close to [name_m]Warren[/name_m] for my liking, but if it doesn’t bother you, go for it - its just the starting sound that’s the same.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] VanAntwerp would be just about the best name ever. I would absolutely use that!

I think [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] is charming. It was a name my husband and I recently considered for our son, although we went with something else in the end.

In my accent the first syllable of [name_m]Warren[/name_m] and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] is the same. I also stumble over the r’s and l’s when saying the names together. For those reasons, I find them too similar but the pronunciation might be different in your area.

I love the idea of your maiden name as your son’s middle name. I did something similar. I kept my surname on marriage and we decided my son would have my husband’s surname so I wanted his middle name to reflect my surname in some way. I didn’t feel my surname worked very well as a middle name for a few reasons so we chose a name that was similar instead. I’m really pleased we did.

In your case, you have so many things going for your maiden name with the symmetry of your older son’s name and sharing your own middle name that I’m putting all my support behind it. It’s a name story I’d never tire of sharing.

I like [name_u]Wallace[/name_u]! It feels old fashioned but in a good way. I think [name_u]Wally[/name_u] is a cute nickname for it too. I do think of the [name_f]Disney[/name_f] robot, but I’m a big [name_f]Disney[/name_f] fan so that wouldn’t bother me.

[name_m]Warren[/name_m] and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] do feel similar to me. i think you could get away with using them as a sibset, but they are pretty close.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] is LOVELY! I love that. Like I’d add that to my own list love it. It flows perfectly and has a great feel to it.

[name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Van[/name_u] is my second choice. I love the meaning behind it and that it is sentimental to you. It feels like a very cool middle name.

I also like the sound of [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u], wallace [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Scott[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Webb[/name_m], [name_u]Wallace[/name_u] [name_m]Oslo[/name_m], and wallace [name_u]Enzo[/name_u]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not as much as the others.
