A name discussion - the end of 2023

Hello, Nameberries! 2023 is ending soon and maybe your style has evolved this year, or maybe this was your first year in this forum. Anyways, here are some questions that I would be interested to hear answers of:

1- How was your overall name style at the start of the 2023?
2- Did it change until now and how?
3- [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that the name style trends and popular names of Nameberry changed in this year from [name_u]January[/name_u] to now and how?
4- [name_f]Do[/name_f] you feel like anything changed in this forum, of atmosphere, user base and way of interacting?

Thank you!

  1. (&2) Comparing my lists at the start and end of 2023, I have realised that my list has expanded with many more names than there were before. There have definitely been some new, rarer additions in contrast to my previously ā€˜playing-it-safeā€™ list.

  2. A bit, yes! I think I saw a lot of people branching into a braver territory, choosing names they wouldnā€™t normally pick. I love that in general. The first half of the year was spent playing safe while in the other half, I believe, people really started experimenting!

  3. Definitely the format. I think people have also started being more private on the forums. But other than that, thereā€™s not much of a change really.

I was on hiatus between [name_u]December[/name_u] 2022 and March/April 2023, but I noticed that in spring / summer people still had the Victorian / cottagecore / Anglo & [name_f]English[/name_f] classical soft nature vibe and the bolder names were word nature names. I at the time did have a safer style (European names that are generally easy to read and write like [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_f]Antonia[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_m]Hans[/name_m] and some [name_u]French[/name_u] names) while it now people tend to like bolder names including mythological, fantasy, international names etc

Hello!

1- [name_f]Ethereal[/name_f], Uncommon, probably slight whimsy/dark if that can be a thingā€¦
2- I think Iā€™m more open to a few more traditional names as long as they arenā€™t too too common. I love [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] :heartpulse:
3- I started here in [name_u]March[/name_u] but I think weā€™re seeing a lot more traditional name picks which is on par with current trends.
4- I donā€™t know that Iā€™ve been here long enough to make a call.

1 - I would describe my overall name style at the start of 2023 as being a bit over-the-top and grandiose with a slight touch of magic and whimsy. :slightly_smiling_face:
2 - I have not observed much of a change, other than perhaps I have become even bolder yet in my naming, and my list has grown for certain! [name_f]My[/name_f] boys naming style has also become softer and more down to earth, I have noticed.
3 - I have not been here long enough since my hiatus to see much change, but I think people are embracing more of the international, mythological, and unusual names, and are being ā€œbraver,ā€ which is always nice to see!
4 - I am afraid that I cannot say, as I had a rather long hiatus of seven months, and I hardly remember my time before said hiatus! :joy: Perhaps the atmosphere is more welcoming? Though it always has been since my time here. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Users are overall very encouraging and lift one another up, and it is wonderful to witness!

1- How was your overall name style at the start of the 2023?

Iā€™d say eclectic, slightly off beat, warm but sparkly (that sounds so vain, sorry)

2- Did it change until now and how?

I donā€™t think so, but I have embraced some old favourites again, and some names that are both more popular or more obscure than Iā€™d gone for before.

3- Do you think that the name style trends and popular names of Nameberry changed in this year from January to now and how?

Iā€™ve seen t more love of quite classic names this year

4- Do you feel like anything changed in this forum, of atmosphere, user base and way of interacting?

I think people are more careful about what they share atm and I feel like thereā€™s more users who join, just to find the name, then donā€™t ā€˜hang aroundā€™ (not saying that as a bad thing, just an obvservation)

  1. I donā€™t even know if I have a name style tbh my names are all over the place.
  2. It has expanded but not necessarily changed because the names I like in the beginning of 2023 I still like them now, Iā€™ve only been adding this year:)
  3. I think people tend to be a little bit more ā€œboldā€ with their name choices instead of the traditional names but even then a lot of people still much prefer the more traditional names which makes it for a well balanced taste in the nameberry community.
  4. I think people tend to be more private which is fair because the internet can be a scary place but other than that I donā€™t know if Iā€™ve seen really a change big enough to be mentioned.

[name_f]My[/name_f] overall style didnā€™t change, but Iā€™ve been focusing even more on what names I can/will actually use. Iā€™ve tried to warm up to the idea of using a top ten name (David), but Iā€™m not convinced yet.

I feel like Iā€™ve been seeing a little less [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] (g) and more [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], [name_u]EsmĆ©[/name_u], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] (b) and [name_m]Stellan[/name_m].

Seasonal names/UCs/combos seem to be very in style this year, but maybe I just didnā€™t notice them before.

  1. Mostly pretty retro/country vibes with a little random other stuff here and there
  2. Not a ton, though Iā€™d say Iā€™ve become slightly more open to other styles and more appreciative of different names in general even if theyā€™re not my absolute favorite
  3. Before it seemed like the most popular names on here were basically just cottagcore or really similar styles but a lot of those have kind of phased out by now, and the names that catch on tend to be a bit more random. People also seem more open to unfamiliar names from different cultures, even if itā€™s still pretty rare for individual ones to get popular.
  4. There have unfortunately seemed to be more heated debates, or at least conversations have felt more serious, though I guess it depends on the thread and I was only here for a couple months last year so maybe I donā€™t have enough context to accurately judge that. It also seems like itā€™s become a tighter knit community and you see fewer accounts that arenā€™t frequent posters

Fun discussion!!

  1. I think my name style at the start of 2023 was a lot more classic? Like I was definitely hanging a little on the safer side

  2. I think Iā€™ve allowed myself to get a lot more adventurous with my naming style!! Iā€™ve never been timid exactly, but Iā€™ve definitely opened my mind to it a little bit more

  3. I think itā€™s pretty much the same, although I do see people going away from some of the more popular nature names (Ivy, Violet) and into some more brave choices (Wilder, Hart)

  4. I think I personally have gotten a lot more comfortable on the forums, and Iā€™ve really gotten to know everyone well which has made me so happy!!

1 & 2. I named a baby this year, and my style tends to change a lot during that process. At the beginning of 2023 I think my name style was more unusual eclectic European names, especially Ancient Greek names (think Odysseus, Astrophel, Europa,ā€¦). I still love those names, but Iā€™m more interested and in love with Hebrew names like Yechezkel, Shaul, Zevulun, Bathshua and Kessem. Also shorter Hebrew names like Rom, Ran and Reef.

3 I think the style is basically the same, but some names arenā€™t mentioned as much as they were earlier in the year, I donā€™t see Kit, Lavender and Birdie as much anymore. Maybe a bit less cottage core in general?

4 The atmosphere has changed a bit for me because of a few incidents, especially concerning privacy etc. I do feel itā€™s now better again than it was a couple of months ago, by which I mean more positive and lessā€¦ tense?

I think Iā€™ve got a little bit ā€˜froofierā€™ and more feminine in my girls names - favourite names at the start of the year were [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and Alice; I still like those names, but Iā€™ve also fallen for some more princessy choices, including [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], which I used to dislike! Unfortunately due to venturing back into the dating pool following a breakup, one or two favourite boys names are now unusable :joy:
I think Nameberry top choices have, as other people have said, grown a bit bolder, and fantasy choices seem to be in [name_f]Vogue[/name_f]! In terms of individual names, I think the [name_u]Berry[/name_u] love affair with [name_f]Margot[/name_f] has come to an end, maybe because post [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] becoming a global superstar it feels like a much more mainstream name!
I think people are certainly a lot more guarded and suspicious about what they share, but I do feel like thereā€™s still a nice buzz on the forums which I really value!

I loved that name, now I prefer [name_f]Margarita[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaux[/name_f], but it still has a place in my heart

1- How was your overall name style at the start of the 2023?
I think my style was a mix of some names that are common in the Netherlands (Mees, [name_m]Lukas[/name_m], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], Roos) and some names with a more unique, flowery vibe (Merlijn, [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], Kamille).

2- Did it change until now and how?
I think my style didnā€™t change much. At the moment Iā€™m also discovering international names that I probably wonā€™t use myself but that I love in the context of other languages/cultures.

3- [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that the name style trends and popular names of Nameberry changed in this year from [name_u]January[/name_u] to now and how?
I havenā€™t really noticed.

4- [name_f]Do[/name_f] you feel like anything changed in this forum, of atmosphere, user base and way of interacting?
@Kipperbo1 took over @katinkaā€™s position of head mod. I think katinka was the head mod since I joined nameberry and she was very good at it. But Iā€™m also loving the work [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] does, especially adding new names to the database that were suggested on the forum.

It was definitely very safe and common-sounding. Things that everyone has heard before and will easily be able to spell/pronounce.

Did it change until now and how?

I donā€™t think it changed a lot, but I do think Iā€™ve gotten more open with new suggestions. And Iā€™m open to more of those natural or more modern boys names. I used to hate boys names :grimacing:

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think the name style trends and popular names of Nameberry changed in this year from [name_u]January[/name_u] to now and how?

So I started here in [name_u]September[/name_u], but Iā€™ve noticed that people are getting a lot braver with their name choices. Iā€™ve also noticed a lot of international names getting some appreciation, and I love that!

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you feel like anything changed in this forum, of atmosphere, user base, and way of interacting?

I donā€™t think Iā€™ve been here long enough so that I can say something about that. However, the community here is very kind, open, and welcoming, and I appreciate that. I wish our real communities were more like this.

I didnā€™t realize how much my style had changed this year! [name_f]My[/name_f] style at the beginning of the year was very homey, sweet, and definitely cottagecore! Now I feel like Iā€™m leaning towards more formal, elegant names. Iā€™m really happy with my girl list right now, but Iā€™m still trying to get the boys side to match!

I honestly have a really hard time analyzing the berry style. I donā€™t think there have been too many noticeable changes. I think we have a more diverse bunch of berries now, which is really exciting! I love learning about different naming styles! As for the culture, Iā€™ve felt more isolated from it, but that may be due to a lack of participation on my end.

I started nb a the other week. I donā€™t think I had a style at the start of 2023 (I liked random names with no cohesiveness). It seems like itā€™s becoming whimsical dark fantasy fairytail. (But not like a cliche princess fairytail)
