A Name for Baby Girl #2

I have been struggling to find a name that I like for my second daughter. My first is [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] ([name_f]Lila[/name_f] for short.) I loved those names for years, so even when I was met with criticism, it never bothered me cuz I was so sure that was the name I wanted for my daughter. My husband and I love alliteration and our last name starts with L, so everything just worked. This time around I have not been as sure. I am more than halfway through and still searching.

I am drawn to the nickname [name_f]Libby[/name_f], but having grown up with a short name that sounds more like a nickname, I did not want that for my daughters. I like longer beautiful names that look pretty on diplomas and are good for shouting :stuck_out_tongue:

I want to stick with the L theme if possible and none of the typical long versions of [name_f]Libby[/name_f] gel with me, e.g. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]/[name_f]Livia[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Lizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_f]Liberty[/name_f], [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], etc.

I like unique names, and the other day, I was sitting in my OB’s office looking at the baby board of birth announcements from his past deliveries, and a name jumped out at me: Leviah. The nurse told me how it was pronounced Lah- V+long a- ah (Like [name_f]Neveah[/name_f] with an L/ like [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] with a V). So far most people I have told (my mom, my aunt, my husband), did not have a positive reaction to the name. My husband prefers Liviana, which is probably more user friendly and easier to pronounce, but it seems overly flowery to me. Leviah has similar sounds but sounds better to my hear, especially when paired with our last name. Plus, Leviah has a better meaning “Lionnes of the [name_m]Lord[/name_m]” vs. Liviana which means " “envious”. Ultimately, my husband doesn’t care that much one way or the other, and we both like [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and [name_f]Liv[/name_f] which will be what we call her 90% of the time. Am I crazy for wanting to use a name that most people will struggle to spell and pronounce? Or should I go with the name that doesn’t sound as nice but is easier to spell and pronounce, since we will use the nickname most of the time anyway?

I have a name with 30+ spellings and at least 2 pronunciations, and though I don’t care for my name, it was never for those reasons. If someone I would have to interact with repeatedly spelled or pronounced my name wrong, I would just politely correct them and move on with my day. If it was someone, like a customer service rep, that I would have a one time interaction with, I would just move past the mix up because I would likely never talk to them again.

My real name is extremely familiar (though not common in my age group) and almost impossible to mispronounce, so that is my perspective. I don’t think I would appreciate having a name involved quite that much clarification, especially if my sister had a more established name like [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]. I would also hesitate to use a name that is unusual, but yet has already been used in the immediate area. I don’t mind common names, but I would think a parent who chose an usual name would not be too pleased to find another in her child’s classroom, teams, etc. Personally, I prefer Liviana and think it would be a bit easier to wear.

[name_f]Lynnea[/name_f] and [name_f]Leilani[/name_f] are two of my favorite L names

I don’t think that name is pretty. I’d rather be called plain [name_f]Libby[/name_f], which I love.

I think [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] is a nice pairing with [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f], although it does not work for the nickname libby.

I’m still confused about how to pronounce it. Is it Lah-VEE-uh or Lah-[name_m]VIN[/name_m]-ee-uh or Luh-VAY-uh. Have you thought about [name_f]Livia[/name_f]? Seems very close in pronunciation to first one but much easier to spell. Or [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]? I think Leviah honestly just too obscure and hard to spell / pronounce. My instinct is to pronounce Leviah like “[name_f]LIV[/name_f]-ee-uh” or like “levy-uh”.

I do really like [name_f]Libby[/name_f] and [name_f]Liv[/name_f] though! I also really REALLY like [name_f]Linnea[/name_f]! Have you considered [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] with a B MN to get to [name_f]Libby[/name_f]? ie. [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_f]Bree[/name_f] or [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f]?

I don’t mind the way Leviah looks, but I just can’t get the “VAY” sound out of v-i. Maybe if it were spelled Levaeh (like [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f])…or Liveah? I know you don’t mind that it will be misspelled/mispronounced, but I’m reminded of a boy I met whose name was pronounced very counterintuitively—his mom introduced him as “[Name], even though it looks like [Intuitive Pronunciation of Name].” [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you’re OK with correcting people all the time, it could get tiresome for your daughter.

Sound-wise, though, I like it! It’s a good match with [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] too—not too many overlapping sounds.

I think it’s way to out there for the lovely [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f].

But also I can’t past [name_m]Leviathan[/name_m].

[name_u]Laken[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] “[name_f]Indie[/name_f]”
[name_u]Landry[/name_u]
[name_m]Langston[/name_m]
[name_f]Lilou[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
[name_f]Leocadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Liora[/name_f]
[name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f] “[name_f]Lux[/name_f]”
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f]
[name_f]Lourdes[/name_f] “[name_f]Lola[/name_f]” <— too close with Lorelei
Lilith
Lilibet “Libby”
Lavender

Maybe the nurse got the pronunciation wrong?

This one actually has the VAY pronunciation written, but if you click to hear the sounds none of them say it that way:

Your pronunciation does sound good, but I would never guess [name_f]VI[/name_f] to make the VAY sound. I’m reminded of a girl in my elementary school named Masasha, pronounced ma-[name_m]SAY[/name_m]-sha; she correct subs like they were idiots, but can you blame them?

I think you would have to pronounce it [name_f]VI[/name_f] or change the spelling to be more intuitive.

I like the suggestion of [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] B… to get [name_f]Libby[/name_f] or [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] V to get to [name_f]Liv[/name_f]

Linnea Bay
Linnea Brynn
Linnea Brooke
Linnea Vale
Linnea Vita
Linnea Virtue

There is also [name_f]Livana[/name_f] (maybe less flowery without the extra i?) or [name_f]Livona[/name_f]

I am not a fan of Leviah

But I love the idea of [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] (or another L name) with a B middle name to get to the nickname [name_f]Libby[/name_f]!

[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_f]Brielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_u]Brooke[/name_u]

I agree with the above poster, I love [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] + a B middle name to make ‘[name_f]Libby[/name_f].’ I’m a bit biased towards liking [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], though, because [name_f]Lene[/name_f]@ is my mother’s name, pronounced the same but based off the goddess rather than the flower.

I think [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] is so classic yet spunky that pairing it with Leviah or [name_f]Livia[/name_f] just doesn’t do the other sister justice.

[name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_f]Liselotte[/name_f] [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]
[name_f]Louise[/name_f] [name_f]Briar[/name_f]/[name_u]Blair[/name_u] (though there’s no Li, I still love it)
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] & [name_f]Louise[/name_f]/[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] with [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f]

I also love alliteration! I think they sound like superhero alter egos and that makes me love it more

My name is a little unusual. ([name_f]Summer[/name_f]) I hated it when I was a kid, though I love it now. I’m always asked “is that your real name, like on your birth certificate?” “Is that a nickname?” People always spell it wrong too.

And I gave my daughter an even more unusual name than mine!!!

I think Livia would be more wearable and have less spelling issues while sounding very similar to Leviah.

That being said I don’t see anything wrong with Leviah if you really love it.

I also really like the suggestions of Lavinia and Lilibet.

Leviah sounds like a biblical name which doesn’t really go with [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] to me. I would pronounce it luh-VYE-uh if I had to guess. It also seems a little masculine since it’s similar to [name_m]Levi[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]. I love the suggestion of [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] B nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f]. [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is great. [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] seems like a great match with [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] to me since it is a well established name, European sounding, and not too popular.

Other ideas:

[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] nn Liddy
[name_f]Liliana[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lily[/name_f] (or maybe Libby for Liliana B)
[name_f]Elaina[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lainy[/name_f]

[name_f]Liberty[/name_f] would be a good name for the nn [name_f]Libby[/name_f].

I like the idea of changing the spelling to make it easier to pronounce by reading. Can you give me some more suggestions of different spellings to get the desired long a (like in say or day) follow by a short a (like in duh) combo? (Think linnea with a v or neveah with an l)

Some other spellings I could see, besides Levaeh and Liveah:

Livaeh

Livea (but you’d get [name_f]LIV[/name_f]-ee-uh a lot, I think)

Liveya / Leveya (much prefer the i version)

Liveia / Leveia (playing to familiarity with the name [name_f]Leia[/name_f])
