Yeah, I know some people might think it’s weird, but it’s actually a pretty common thing to name your instrument. I’ve already named my current violin (Jane), but I need a name for my other one. I know it’s a boy, and the only suitable name I can think rn is [name_m]Tommy[/name_m]. He’s an orange-ish hue, and has a more muted sound than Jane/other violins. [name_m]Can[/name_m] someone help?
I’d be happy to help! Back in high school, I named my trombone [name_u]Solstice[/name_u], so you’re in good company.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_m]Tommy[/name_m], or would [name_m]Tom[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], or Tom-Tom work? [name_u]Or[/name_u] even the Polish spelling [name_m]Tomasz[/name_m], which I think is cool.
How about:
[name_u]Robin[/name_u] (soft, musical; means bright, shining, famed)
[name_u]Tobin[/name_u] (soft but with an edge; means God is good)
Here’s some more origin info
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m] (classic, just sounds good to me)
[name_u]Asa[/name_u] (means healer, expert, or born in the morning sun)
Eshmun (a super rare name that sounds gentle but fierce; the Phoenician god of healing)
[name_u]Brennan[/name_u] (makes me think of orange/red, means sorrow, which fits the heartwrenching sound of a violin)
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] (also means sorrow, same letter as Tommy)
[name_m]Boaz[/name_m] (means strong, swift; kind of on the nose because of a violin’s bow)
[name_m]Boone[/name_m] (means good; kind of sounds like a long, low note being played; and a boon is a request or something helpful or beneficial, like a rainstorm after a drought)
These are just a few ideas to get you started. I hope you find something soon!
Oooooh, [name_u]Tobin[/name_u] is cool
i always name my instruments, as well! so there are more of us than you think
i usually go for more quirky names (i have a joni and a tennessee!) but i love that you go more classic!
i think @avenmaide ’s suggestion of tobin is perfect!
here are a few more soft and classic names that i feel fit well with jane:
kit
sasha
florian
eliseo / elio
august
milo
frederick
oscar
jude
ira
percy
[name_m]Tommy[/name_m] is nice!
[name_u]Clancy[/name_u], [name_u]Tristan[/name_u], [name_u]Jules[/name_u], [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] came to mind
I agree with the suggestion of [name_u]Tobin[/name_u]! [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] could be a good option as well.
I am a bassoonist. I started on a school bassoon, which I jokingly called [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] Bassoon. I got my first bassoon in high school. I named it Svajone, which is a Lithuanian name meaning “dream”.
The bassoon I have now doesn’t have a name. It was 80 years old when I bought it, and it already had quite the storied history by then. It was originally ordered by someone in [name_u]Germany[/name_u], then it was played in the NY [name_u]Phil[/name_u] in the 1950s-1960s, and then it spent a few decades as a school bassoon at a college in the Midwest! I thought about giving it a name, but it just didn’t feel right to assign a name to a bassoon that had already lived through 80 years of musical adventures.
