At our 20 week scan, we found out that our baby boy (our second boy) has an exceptionally rare and severe heart defect. We are 24 weeks now, and deep into planning for a complex birth and surgery (although, the truth is we don’t know for sure he will make it to birth). Finding a name for him soon is important for us, regardless of outcome.
Our first son is [name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] and our last name is one syllable.
Three weeks ago DH suggested [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] for new baby and I love it. I think it goes so well with [name_m]Simon[/name_m], it’s a saint’s name (we’re Catholic), it’s traditional but not super common in the US (I know it’s more popular in the UK), and it has a little spunk too. But DH is not ready to commit. I can’t come up with a middle that I like or that has significance for our family.
So my questions are: 1. What are your somewhat traditional 3-4 syllable (or 1 syllable) middle name suggestions that would work so well with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] that DH will commit? and/or 2. If we can’t settle on [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] as a first, what other ideas do you have of names that are sturdy/traditional/not in the top 20? We’ve thought about [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] (too common), [name_u]Walter[/name_u] (I like, DH does not), [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] (I don’t like nn Pat).
I’m very sorry you’re going through that. I really love Oscar and Simon together. My middle names are also what I would suggest for first names.
Oscar Anthony
Oscar Elijah
Oscar Christian / Christopher
Oscar Nicholas
Oscar Jacob
Oscar Noah
Oscar Dimitri
Oscar James
Oscar Phineas / Finneas / Finnegan
Oscar Salvatore (matches Simon Vincent)
Oscar Sebastian
Oscar Nathaniel / Nate
Oscar Dominic / Donovan
Oscar Sullivan
So sorry you are dealing with this diagnosis. I am hoping for a positive outcome for you and your little guy.
I think [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is a great name and pairs beautifully with [name_m]Simon[/name_m].

[name_f]My[/name_f] BIL named his son with heart defect [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] because it means “whole-hearted.” I always thought that was nice. Sending positive thoughts to your family.
Praying for you and your baby. Oscar is a wonderful name and great choice. Love Patrick and think you could probably avoid Pat.
Other first name suggestions: Victor (meaningful faith connection), Thomas, Andrew, Leo, Laurence/Lawrence, Philip, Peter, Paul, Francis. Joseph also goes well with Simon and could be used for the middle or first name. Other middle name suggestions for Oscar: George, Anthony, Damian, Dominic, Gabriel Emmanuel, Alexander.
If you are OK with a very unusual middle name, my personal favourite is Oscar Bede (a great saint name meaning ‘prayer’).
Sending you lots of strength and good wishes from over here.
I love the name Oscar (it’s my nephew’s name), and I would pair it as:
Oscar Harris
Oscar Thomas
Oscar Theodore
Oscar Patrick (to avoid nn - I love the name Patrick but also don’t like Pat)
Oscar Philip
Oscar Felix
Oscar Francis
Oscar Alexander
Oscar Joseph
Oscar Benedict
Oscar Jude
Oscar Christopher
Oscar Henry
Oscar Emmanuel
Oscar Peter
Oscar Timothy
