My husband has fallen in love with the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. I like the name, but can’t get the image of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] Buffay from FRIENDS out of my head. My first questions is: What are your opinions on the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]? Secondly, can you think of any names that are similar to [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] that my husband and I may agree on? I tend to like old-fashioned names.

I actually like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], although it took a while for the friends character to leave my mind.
It is spunky, cute, normally spelled the same, although in the 1800’s it had been spelled [name_f]Phebe[/name_f]. Where the “o” came from I 've no clue.
I would say [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] makes me think of [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], and she happens to be on your list.

I like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and the character doesn’t bother me. I like the bird meaning and the mythology connection. The perky -ee sound ending is nice too, gives it a sunny feel. It has a light, lilting feel, but isn’t too modern.

[name_u]Wren[/name_u], which I think of when I think of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] because phoebes are a small songbird.
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f], [name_f]Ione[/name_f] - some of my favourite Greek names that aren’t as popular as [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]. I also like [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] & [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] but they’re a bit long compared to [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f].
[name_f]Zara[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - Two syllables names that have history but don’t sound clunky or weighty. These are all pretty cheery feeling to me, and a bit zippy, but none of them are “made up.”
[name_f]Naomi[/name_f] - Gentle and Biblical but with a perky -ee ending and never out of the US Top Thousand, so relatively timeless.

I was an avid reader as a kid and a lot of the novels I read were probably from 60s 70s 80s and there were many pheobes (and rachel). Though I liked friends the only names I associate with the show are chandler and somewhat [name_m]Ross[/name_m]
I agree that [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is a good substitute, also [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
The first thing I think of with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] non-obviously Greek mythology names, both have that ph sound, both have six letters and two syllables, and they just seem to fit together.
