A name nobody likes

I guess I’m here so you can all talk me out of it. I love the name [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f], I think it’s so pretty and fairy-like, but literally every person I mention it to IRL hates it (including DH, but he hates everything). Is it as bad as people say? [name_m]Can[/name_m] you talk me down?

I don’t think its a bad name it just sounds like a corruption of the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] which has a whole list of connotations.

So I first read, [name_f]Alisha[/name_f]. I will say it’s not incredibly phonetically intuitive.it is important your SO also likes the name haha

It’s a popular name in [name_u]Scotland[/name_u] so a lot of Scottish people like it! I like it too :slightly_smiling_face:

[name_f]Ailsa[/name_f] is one of my favorite names!! So sweet, yet strong. [name_f]Every[/name_f] meaning I’ve seen for it has been lovely too. The pronunciation makes sense to me, and either way I think it’d be an easy correction to make!!
I know this doesn’t help, but I was just too excited to see some love for [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f]!

I don’t think it’s bad, but it is definitely unfamiliar to most people, which is probably why it sparks negative reactions.

I think outside of [name_u]Scotland[/name_u] the name feels rare and potentially phonetically confusing but it’s not a bad choice at all I think the name has a pretty fairylike quality

I like it.

I think it’s very pretty. I know an [name_f]Alisa[/name_f] and I don’t think it’s ever been a problem.

I like it! I find it light and airy but with a real will and strength to it. I’ve known several and they’ve all been intelligent, independent, generous people, so only good associations here!

The thing that would put me off actually using it is the similarity to more popular names like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Alisa[/name_f], which I think could lead to some confusion since [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f] itself is quite little-known outside [name_u]Scotland[/name_u].

I agree.

I think it’s nice but there are many other names out there which have the elf/fairy meaning which are more beautiful in sound in my opinion.
Elva
Elvina
Elfin
Elfrida
Fae

And to those who are only hearing the name and not seeing it written it sounds like Elsa if that doesn’t bother you.

I think [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f] is a lovely name so am surprised you’ve met so much negativity. It is very like a lot of names that are currently popular, such as [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Aria[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], so I would have thought that the sounds would be appealing. I actually much prefer it over those other more popular names as it has a sweet distinctness. I really like how [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f] connects you to a place, [name_u]Scotland[/name_u], too - not that I think you need to be Scottish to use it.

I like [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f].

I actually really like it!! It has such an interesting sound!!

I think it’s a beautiful, magical sounding name :sparkles: Most negative comments I’ve heard are about its similarity with [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], but it’s not a huge issue imo

I dislike it intensely. I have no idea how to say it. But I tend to prefer definite names with more consonants than vowels anyway.

I thought it was [name_f]Alisa[/name_f] at first. I don’t think I’ve heard of this name before. I don’t think it is bad but it seems like only certain places are overly familiar with it. Confusion aside, I don’t see why it can’t be a valid choice.

Well, I like it! I love Scots names, especially those with a more Scandinavian background. The meaning is so cute, too!

The pronunciation is kind of strange given the spelling. Otherwise it seems totally normal.
