A Name To Honor Our Late Daughter

[name_f]My[/name_f] wife and I have three children. Twin boys [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] [name_u]Royce[/name_u] and [name_u]Onyx[/name_u] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] who are five, and a Daughter [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] who is forever 2. She passed away a little over a month ago. [name_f]My[/name_f] wife and I are about a month away from welcoming our second daughter. We haven’t picked a name yet. With our first three children their names starting with vowels and their initials spelling worlds was important to us. (Our kids initials are [name_m]Ark[/name_m], [name_u]Oak[/name_u], and Ink) During this pregnancy we hadn’t had the chance to think of names, and since our daughter’s passing it feels impossible. We look at our lists and think of all the names we almost picked for [name_u]Indie[/name_u] and don’t end up choosing anything. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for a name that would honor her and go with our other children’s names. [name_u]New[/name_u] baby’s name doesn’t need to start with a vowel or spell anything. We just really need help naming her, we’re at a loss and our due date is approaching quickly.

Wow! I am so sorry grief has touched your lives in this way. Death, however expected or not, is never easy. I mourn with you

I definitely get why thinking of names would be so incredibly difficult so I’ll try to help with the mental load/ give categories to maybe help out!

Maybe a name like [name_u]Celeste[/name_u] “heavenly” or [name_u]Skye[/name_u]?
Maybe another shade of purple/blue like [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] or [name_f]Sapphire[/name_f]?
Maybe something with the same initial letter like [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] / [name_f]Ione[/name_f] “purple flower” or [name_f]Iris[/name_f] “rainbow?” or is it too difficult?
Last suggestion is maybe a theme:
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] “purple star”
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] [name_u]Skye[/name_u] “purple flower in the sky”
[name_u]Celeste[/name_u] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] “heavenly shade of purple”

The only other initials I can come up with that spell anything would be another A name with ASK but I was unsure if you would want another one…so I can suggest more if need be.

Again, take your time to grieve.

Names that would honor your older daughter:

[name_u]Ever[/name_u] (because you will love and remember [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] forever)
would spell “ELK” if you put it with any L girl name

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] (another color name, and violet is next to indigo on the rainbow)
I don’t think there are any words you can spell with this one

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] (another I name, and it means rainbow, like your rainbow baby)
you could give this daugher the initials “INK” too, as a further honor

I’m so sorry for your loss. Good luck with the name.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I think it’s a sweet idea to honour your first daughter with her little sister’s name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought is [name_u]Ivy[/name_u]. It starts with I like [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] and has subtle link to christmas (for Noelle).

[name_f]Azura[/name_f] - blue sky. [name_u]Will[/name_u] names with celestial or heavenly meaning work in remembering your daughter?
[name_f]Elle[/name_f] - I still like the idea of continuing with vowel name (if you find one that you love, of course). And also, maybe [name_f]Elle[/name_f] can honour [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]?
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] - light
[name_f]Nadya[/name_f] - hope
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] - rainbow
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] - star
[name_f]Eleni[/name_f] - shinning light
[name_f]Althea[/name_f] - healer
[name_u]Esme[/name_u] - loved

[name_u]Seren[/name_u] [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] (star / christmas)
[name_u]Enfys[/name_u] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] (rainbow / light)
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f] [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] (hope / similar in sound to Indigo)
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] (a colour, similar to [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] / middle ending in the same sound)
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Margo[/name_f] (dark purple flower / similar in sound to Indigo)

I’m so sorry.

I think I would choose a name with the same initials as [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f] to honour her. It would be so special to your family to know that connect and yet new baby’s name would also be unique to herself in terms of meanings etc. with that in mind, here are some I and N that go with [name_u]Atlas[/name_u], [name_u]Onyx[/name_u] and [name_u]Indigo[/name_u].

[name_u]Ivy[/name_u]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Iliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Iva[/name_f]
[name_f]Iona[/name_f]
[name_f]Ines[/name_f]
[name_u]Izzy[/name_u]

Noa/ [name_u]Noah[/name_u]
[name_f]Nessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Nala[/name_f]
[name_u]Navy[/name_u]
[name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalia[/name_f]
Nell/Nellie
[name_f]Natasha[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Neveah[/name_f] (letters spell Heaven)

Some of my favourite combos
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_f]Neveah[/name_f]
[name_f]Iva[/name_f] [name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] [name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_u]Noa[/name_u]
[name_f]Ines[/name_f] [name_f]Natalia[/name_f]
[name_u]Izzy[/name_u] [name_f]Neveah[/name_f]

I’m so sorry for your loss. Best wishes for your family & new bub :white_heart:

A colour name could be a sweet honour for your daughter. Maybe:

Violet
Lilac
Lavender
Amethyst

Azure
Ivory
Saffron
Crimson
Scarlet
Amber
Olive
Jade
Goldie
Cyan
Hazel
Coral

Having matching initials or even just the matching ‘N’ initial is a nice nod. Perhaps perhaps even two middles with the ‘IN’ initials could work. For example:

INK: Ivory Natalie K (Natalie means ‘Christmas’; “white Christmas”)
PNK: Poppy N___ K
LNK: Lavender N___ K
ANK: Amber / Amethyst N___ K
LINK: Lavender / Lilac Iris Natalie K, Lux / Luz Iris Nora K, Lumi Iris Noa K (I really like Iris as an ‘I’ name honour as previously suggested, because of its meaning ‘rainbow’, and it’s a shade of purple. Lux / Luz mean ‘light’, Lumi means ‘snow’; Nora means ‘honour’ or ‘light’ and Noa honours Noelle)

I think the initials spelling a word theme is a really neat link between all your kids. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find many three letter words ending in K, aside from ELK. Elks are spiritual animals, and usually regarded as symbols of strength.
Inspiration: Eve Lettice K (“life of joy”), Estelle Lilac K (“star of lilac” > “purple star”) Eden Lucia (“paradise star” > “star of paradise/delight”), Echo Lucy (echo of light), Eira Lavender (“purple snow”).

I’m also going to suggest Inka, because I love her with Atlas, Onyx & Indigo, and it’s also a lovely nod to Indigo’s initials, INK.

Apologies for the long, rambling post. I hope you can draw some inspiration to make this process a bit easier. Best of luck.

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope baby’s delivery is smooth and easy. There is some spiritual significance around Elk for strength and resiliency. Maybe something like [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] [name_u]Lane[/name_u]?

I am so sorry for your loss.

The only other word I can think of that ends in k is ELK or maybe using her initials or another blue?

[name_f]Iris[/name_f] Nuka (Nuka means “younger sister” in Greenland)
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] (Nadia means “hope”)

[name_f]Emerald[/name_f] [name_u]Laney[/name_u]
[name_f]Emeraude[/name_f] [name_u]Love[/name_u]
[name_u]Ember[/name_u] [name_u]Lux[/name_u] (means light)
[name_u]Echo[/name_u] [name_f]Lily[/name_f]
[name_f]Ebony[/name_f] [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]
[name_f]Sapphire[/name_f] [name_f]Natasha[/name_f]
[name_f]Azura[/name_f] [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]
[name_u]Cobalt[/name_u] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_u]Cerulean[/name_u] [name_f]Melinda[/name_f]
Cielle [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] (means sky and ends with -elle like Noelle)

I am so sorry for your family’s loss & will keep you in my prayers as you navigate this unimaginable situation.
I came up with a few ways you could honor your beloved Indig0 N0elle.

Through initial meaning:

Summary

Indigo - The leaves of certain indigo plants are used to make dyes, watercolors, tempura paints, & oil paints. It was once the most commonly used natural dye in the world.
Dak - East Indian tree bearing a profusion of intense vermilion velvet-textured blooms and yielding a yellow dye.
My 2 year old daughter’s name is Indig0 N0elle as well. I chose her first name because of my love for art history & nature. This may be a more subtle connection for you all, but it felt meaningful to me.

Name combinations for the initials Dak:
Dahli Amore (branch/shoot of love)
Delphi Anouk (womb of grace)
Dove Amari (a bird symbolizing peace, eternal)
Daisy Alcott (day’s eye, dweller at the old cottage)
Delphinium Awela (dolphin, one who is as refreshing as a breeze)
Delphine Azure (dolphin, sky blue)

Using her sister’s initials:

Summary

Idonea Nephele (love again/renewal, cloudy)
Ilona Nandi (light & joy)
Iona - yew place/dove
Ianthe Neoma (violet flower, new moon)
Idalia Nomi (behold the sun, beautiful/pleasant/delightful)
Imara Noble (firm, aristocratic/having fine personal qualities)
Indra Niobe (possesses rain, fern, tragic mythological queen)
Isolde Nightingale (fair lady/ice ruler, night singer)

Through name meaning:
Elk:

Summary

Elska Luz (love & light)
Enzi Love (powerful love)
Eilonwy Lyrik (river melody lyre/words of a song)
Eira Lavender (snow, purple flowering herb/color) ~ Indigo Noelle (flowering plant/color, Christmas)
Esti Lux (starlight) or Esti Liora (the star that is my light)
Evadne Lowena (good joy) or Evadne Lenora (good compassion)

Ask:

Summary

Amari Selah (eternal musical pause)
Alma Salome (nourishing peace)
Alethea Sonnet (truthful little song)
Azure Snow (sky blue snow)
Anouk Shalom (grace & peace)
Apricity Solstice (the warmth of the sun in winter when the sun stands still)

I’m so sorry for the loss of your beautiful [name_u]Indigo[/name_u].

You have received some lovely suggestions for honour names so far.

[name_f]My[/name_f] idea is to use the initials ILK - with the word ilk meaning of the same kind or the same family. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is a wonderful suggestion for its sound and meaning.

Another idea is to use 2 middle names to get the initials LARK - larks symbolise happiness and the start of a new day. Eg [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Rose[/name_u] K.

Indigo’s initials were originally going to be ELK, I had forgotten about that almost completely since we changed our minds so early in our pregnancy. Maybe we’ll use the ELK initials this time.

This season of our lives has been very hard. Our daughter had just celebrated her second birthday at the end of [name_u]November[/name_u] and was gone a few weeks later. Grieving her has been the hardest thing we’ve ever done. I’m afraid that my wife and I aren’t being there enough for our sons. They turned five in [name_u]September[/name_u] and this is the first experience they’ve ever had with loss. We don’t know how to navigate being their moms right now. I wish we had picked a name sooner but we didn’t. I love flower names! Our daughter was almost [name_f]Ione[/name_f].

Thank you for your reply! It was very unexpected. [name_f]My[/name_f] BIL was taking out for her 2nd birthday a few weeks after her birthday. She was so excited, he had taken her brothers out for their birthday a few weeks prior and they boys hadn’t stopped taking about their fun day with Uncle [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and they were hit by a drunk driver. [name_u]Noah[/name_u] was fine physically but my wife and I are worried because he hasn’t been around much since the funeral. He normally sees our kids a few times a week (3-5 times a week) but we’ve seen him exactly 7 times since Indies passing on [name_u]December[/name_u] 11th, and 5 of times were before her wake/funeral on the 18th.

Absolutely love [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]. Indigos middle name was for her Uncle [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and my sister whose middle name is [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] Noah+Estelle=Noelle. I’d love to use it but I worry [name_u]Noah[/name_u] would think we are removing the [name_u]Noah[/name_u] portion of [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]. I don’t want him to think we think it’s his fault more than he probably does.

I also love the name [name_f]Ione[/name_f], it was almost Indie’s name.

I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and Althea!! [name_f]My[/name_f] wife and I aren’t being picky with a vowel/ name word but these feel like they go well with [name_u]Atlas[/name_u], [name_u]Onyx[/name_u] and [name_u]Indigo[/name_u]

I love [name_u]Ember[/name_u], my wife feels different about it. She says it’s what you see when a fire started to fade/die. So I don’t think we’ll be using it.
I also love [name_f]Opal[/name_f] and [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]. These are all very good names! Thank you!
