A nameberry approved name

Confession: I sometimes feel that becoming a name nerd puts too much pressure on finding the perfect name. I love judging other people’s names in real life, offering suggestions to expecting parents, browsing the naming blogs and such, but I feel that this means my name choices need to be held to a higher standard. There have been a few names that hubs and I have tossed around that I think…no, NB would find that too common/trendy etc.

For instance, [name_f]Brynn[/name_f]. It’s a name we liked when naming #2. It was our top choice for a while, and we’ve considered it again this time. I think it’s pretty, brisk, breezy, I can picture it on a “cool girl” in high school. But based on some negative feedback on NB, and my sister saying it was a Teen Mom baby name, I feel like it wouldn’t be a substantial enough choice.

So, what say you nameberry, would you approve of the name [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] with my sib set?

I think if you really love it go for it. I know there’s quite a few fans of [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] on here.
Personally I find it a bit too trendy sounding. Especially with siblings [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] which are very classic sounding names.
I can picture it better on a girl with siblings [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] and [name_u]Aiden[/name_u]. Sorry

I think [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] fits well with [name_m]Grant[/name_m] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f], actually. It is a similar length to them, and to me has a similar vibe as well. I could most see it paired with a short MN as [name_f]Isla[/name_f]'s [name_f]Hope[/name_f] versus something long and flowy (because then the balance would be off imo).

I’m seeing a lot of comments that [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is now trendy too though (it wasn’t in the top 1,000 when I chose it though, grr!) I hate that people call it trendy, but almost feel like it gives me permission to use another trendy name for #3?

I like [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] and I think it sounds nice with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m].

I like it too!

A trendy name to me is one that will feel old / worn-out in a few years.
A name that if you had to guess the birthdate of it’s bearer you could easily do so.
So if I had to guess the birthdate of an [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] in a few years, I would say between 2008 and 2013 (for example).
[name_f]Brynn[/name_f] feels like one of these names for me. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] don’t really.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] to clear up what I mean with trendy

I love [name_f]Brynn[/name_f]/[name_u]Bryn[/name_u] (not sure which spelling I prefer). I think [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_m]Grant[/name_m], and [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] go perfectly together.

I guess I feel differently about [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] than a lot of folks on here because one of my close friends is a 28-year-old [name_f]Brynne[/name_f], and we were friends long before the name took off. I see it close to the way you described it, maybe swapping out popular for smart/funny/quirky.

That said, I guess I’d say to evaluate how you feel about the inevitable date-stamp. Personally, it bothers me for some names but not others. [name_f]Isla[/name_f], for instance - it’s risen quickly, is easily traceable to this era, but I don’t think it will [name_m]FEEL[/name_m] as dated as [name_u]Addyson[/name_u] in 20 years.

I dislike Nameberry snobbery immensely and I think people should name their children literally whatever they want. But I think the fact that the forums as a community work so well together is that they attract (or maybe create) a single group of people who like very similar names. This in turn creates a yes/no system of what’s good and bad. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] = yes. [name_f]Paige[/name_f] and Quinlynn = no. Plus the primary focus is discussing names, therefore people are more critical than they would otherwise be.

Go for [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] if you love it.

It’s not at all my style, and I do think it’s on the trendy side, but I see the appeal and I think it’s fine with your other kids’ names. A teen mom name to me would be “Brynnlee” or “Brynlyn” or something. On its own it is dignified enough. It also happens to be my daughter’s pediatrician’s name (although I think she spells it with just one n), and it never struck me as inappropriate for a grown professional woman.

I’m encouraged to hear there are some adult Bryns around. I find brynn pretty similar to [name_f]Bree[/name_f] and I know at least one [name_f]Bree[/name_f] my age.

I think [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] suonds lovely with your other childrens’ names. The most important thing to remember is, if you and DH love it… That’s the only thing that matters.

Congrats and good luck.

[name_f]Brynn[/name_f] is a pretty name and will go well with the sibs’ names. Go for it!

[name_f]Brynn[/name_f] is a sweet and simple name just like your other kids names. If you love it, go for it! I think it goes quite well with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m].

It does have a “trendy” air about it… But I don’t think it really is. It goes nicely with your sibset. I prefer [name_u]Brin[/name_u], but my main issue with it is that it feels unfinished as a first name. I would say pump it up and use [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] as a NN, but that just leads me to Brynnley(li,ly,lay) which is the epitome of trendy today.

My basic feelings:
I don’t see anything inherently wrong with [name_f]Brynn[/name_f]; if you love it, go for it!

I think [name_f]Bryony[/name_f] nn [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] would be AWESOME in your sibset, but [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] on its own isn’t my cup of tea at all. That’s just me, though, because I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with [name_f]Brynn[/name_f].

I might be slightly thrown. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f] is very feminine, and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] is a Welsh masculine name. Sadly, I don’t think many people here in the States know that.

Whether or not I “approve” of [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] doesn’t matter. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you love it? Does your husband love it? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think your daughter will love it? If the answer to all three questions is yes, then that’s really all that needs to be said.

[name_f]Bryony[/name_f] is pron [name_m]Brian[/name_m]-ey right?

I think [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_m]Grant[/name_m], and [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] are a fine sibset! I know a 30-year-old [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], so like a previous poster, I don’t see it as trendy. [name_u]Brinley[/name_u] is certainly trendy, but with all the -ley names out there, the effect is watered down so much that I don’t connect [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] to [name_u]Brinley[/name_u] anymore than I would [name_m]Ken[/name_m] to [name_f]Kenley[/name_f].
