Hello Berries, I’m posting this while watching a live feed of the Worldwide Hobbit [name_f]Fan[/name_f] Event (multasking even when relaxing is my motto! :)). The second Hobbit film “the Desolation of Smaug” will be out in [name_u]December[/name_u] and in this installment, a new female [name_m]Elven[/name_m] character of Tauriel is introduced. The character (played by [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] in a striking red wig) does not appear in the original book by Tolkien but instead was created by [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] and his producing partner [name_u]Fran[/name_u] [name_m]Walsh[/name_m]. I have a question for you Berries: [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that Tauriel can become the next [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]?
Tauriel’s very pretty. I will probably add it to my list when I’ve seen the movie… just in time for [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Girl’s arrival.
It’s much lovelier than [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], in my opinion, and it’s very usable… even though it’s not real Tolkien. hysterical sobbing
You mean sassy, rebellious red-head? I thought that was [name_f]Merida[/name_f]. I don’t think Tauriel will make quite the splash (pun intended :D) [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] did. I’m curious about her character, and am always a fan of intelligent, strong female characters for girls to look up to, if it feels authentic. I think the name could be popular. It’s cute, [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] meets [name_f]Tori[/name_f].
Oh [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], you have new names in your signature! I like.
Tauriel – what a lovely name! And it’s true to Tolkien’s books, as this is a genuine Quenya Elvish name!
In Quenya, Tauriel means “daughter of the forest.” The name combines the Quenya word taurë (“forest”) with the Quenya suffix –iel (“daughter of”).

Can’t wait for the next Hobbit film, because I’m crushing on [name_m]Martin[/name_m] [name_m]Freeman[/name_m]. ([name_f]Love[/name_f] him and [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] Cumberbatch in the television series [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m], too!)
Firstly, yes. This statement is most correct.
Secondly, the addition of the girl for the sole purpose of creating a love story between her* and Legolas** just made me angry ![]()
Thirdly, Tauriel makes me think of bulls. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I’m guessing it’s pronounced ‘TOW’ rather than ‘[name_m]TOR[/name_m]’. Like Smaug.
*feel like I read that somewhere, may have rage quit the page before accuracy could be verified
** who wasn’t even in the Hobbit anyway "-_-
[name_u]Ren[/name_u]; I agree with you. But I remember a lot of us hardcore Tolkien fans being pissed about the whole [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] thing in LOTR and it worked. The pale orc (or mr disgusting as he’s known as in my house) in The Hobbit part one worked as well.
I trust [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]. And Tolkien kind of sucked at including female characters, so the feminist in me is excited to see a badass woodland elf!
[name_f]Nephele[/name_f]; daughter of the forest! I thought that was what it meant. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f].
[name_f]Fey[/name_f]; thank you!!!
Oh, hmm, I read that the love story was between Tauriel and a dwarf, not sure which. I’d rather no love story at all, personally, but will reserve judgement until after I’ve seen it. And then I’ll judge and rant to my heart’s content. I think it could work, adding a female character I mean. I don’t think every story has to have a male and female character, but it would be nice to have some estrogen in the film.
We’ll see how it’s done. [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] seems to have massive respect and love for the world, so I’m trusting he’ll do it right. I remember when the original trilogy was coming out, and there was some talk of a battle scene with [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] so they could have a “strong” female character. Never mind that [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] is already a shield-maiden, or that strength means more than fighting in some battle, but in the end he took the scene out.
I’ve deliberately avoided reading anything about the next Hobbit movie. I want to be surprised.
But this weekend I’m attending a Dr Who convention where [name_m]Sylvester[/name_m] [name_m]McCoy[/name_m] will be one of the honored guests. Y’all may remember his role as the wizard Radagast in the Hobbit movie. He’s also supposed to be in the next Hobbit movie, and I just know I’m going to be tempted to talk with him about it when I see him this weekend.

@[name_f]Nephele[/name_f] - I’ve been crushing on [name_m]Richard[/name_m] “[name_m]Thorin[/name_m]” Armitage since he played [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Thornton[/name_m] in the TV series “[name_u]North[/name_u] and South”. [name_m]Martin[/name_m] [name_m]Freeman[/name_m] is hysterical and surprisingly, I’ve seen [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] Cumberbatch on a couple of talk shows and he’s quite funny too!
Tauriel is a pretty name, and I admit that I am a little bit excited to see what they’ll do with her. I’m sure if it was going to be a huge distraction from the original plot then [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] wouldn’t have included her, but as that book is not even 300 pages long and they are making three movies out of it I do see why they feel the need to elaborate. As [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] said, the backstory of [name_m]Thorin[/name_m] and the white orc seemed to work out pretty well in the first film. And I would never complain about seeing more of Legolas anywhere.
Also I just really love [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]. She was great in LOST and she’s so gorgeous, she will make a wonderful elf.
Firstly, I just need to say how much I love this thread. Tolkien, Dr Who, [name_m]Martin[/name_m] [name_m]Freeman[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] Cumberbatch, AND [name_m]Richard[/name_m] Armitage appreciation all in one? Brill!
Anyway, I wasn’t particularly thrilled with the name Tauriel at first (like @renrose said, a bit too reminiscent of bulls) but it’s growing on me. I’m also interested to know whether it’s [name_m]TOR[/name_m]-iel or TOW-riel, like Smaug. As for the character, I’m not generally keen when new characters are created but I like the idea of another female, I can never have enough Legolas, and I also trust [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], so we shall see.
I don’t mind the new character. Tolkien essentially the history of a world. We can’t expect him to describe every person in it. So in that respect an elf named Tauriel would be entirely plausible. The love story on the other hand… meh. It’s not that I can’t believe Legolas could ever have a „girlfriend”. It’s just that I have [name_u]Michael[/name_u] Martinez’ essay about Legolas in my mind and the idea of Legolas and a girl and that essay just doesn’t mix in my head.
I do like the name Tauriel though… but I have seen better.
There’s no love story between Legolas & Tauriel. They’re friends, not lovers.
Aaaand everything [name_f]Amy[/name_f] said. I’m all for more [name_m]Orlando[/name_m] Bloom in a wig with some arrows, even if it’s not in the book. They had to do something, we all knew that when we learned it was going to be a trilogy.
My friend and I went to see a [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] talk in [name_u]London[/name_u] last year. Most of the main cast were there (minus BC and US). Mr [name_m]Freeman[/name_m] has a really odd sense of humour, so difficult to tell when he’s not being serious, lol.
Is anyone watching the Live Feed of the LA premiere of the second Hobbit film? It’s on Facebook NOW. [name_m]Just[/name_m] type in The Hobbit Film to see the actors being interviewed as they arrive.
Wonderful! I absolutely adore [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings and its’ characters (especially Legolas, thank you very much). The Hobbit was an exquisite movie; I’m sure that the second will live up to my expectations and dreams. The name Tauriel seems lovely, like all Tolkien names ([name_f]Eowyn[/name_f], [name_m]Aragon[/name_m], etc.) but I’m not positive on how similar it’s popularity will be compared to [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]. Either way, beautiful name, amazing movies.
