Re what people are saying about little kids not caring: no, they probably won’t. A 5 yr old kid won’t be giving much thought to names. But little [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] won’t spend her entire life around people exactly the same age as her- she will come into contact with a lot of adults, for whom a young [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] would probably seem very odd. And kids grow up. When I was born, the mum names would’ve been [name_f]Linda[/name_f], [name_f]Janet[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], [name_f]Denise[/name_f]… and I would hate to be one of them. They’re still too dated now. 100-year rule, not 60-year!
I’m a [name_f]Karen[/name_f] born in the eighties. Knowing adults with my name didn’t do me any harm
I didn’t give my name a second thought when I was kid, it was just my name.
Yes, in 20 years there will be lots of middle-class Sharons and Tracys running around. Others in same ilk are [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], [name_u]Kelly[/name_u], [name_u]Tracy[/name_u] and [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u].
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about other people’s snobbery. Go with your heart. The name [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] won’t have the same connotation to kids now as it used to.
I dislike it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] unappealing to me. I want to say I don’t think it’s very pretty but I do have girl names on my list that aren’t what one could call pretty so I don’t know… just not for me. I think when people say dated they mean you could literally guess someone’s age based on that name… some of the trendy examples on this thread are names that will certainly be dated in that sense in a decade or so.
Ha, I provide an opinion on why a dated name shouldn’t be used and now I’m a snob
Like I said, the dated mum names when I was a kid are still dated now. [name_m]Even[/name_m] the mum names when my mum was born are still dated. [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] will, in all probability, still be a dated name to kids in 20 years’ time.
@ren: It’s not knowing adults with your name that puts me off dated names. I’ve always known loads of adults with my name. It’s having a name that’s way out of its generation that seems odd and kind of hilarious at times (see the popularity of [name_m]Graham[/name_m] & [name_m]Derek[/name_m] in the States. Makes me laugh to think there’s lots of baby Grahams!) I get that some people won’t care, but others, like alphabetters, obviously do. I would!
It does remind me of the rose of [name_f]Sharon[/name_f]…but I knew a girl named [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] who went by [name_f]Shar[/name_f], so that kinda ruined it for me!
I know a 17 year old Australian [name_f]Sharon[/name_f].
And I know a lot of Aussies who find it HILARIOUS. One of them was even named [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] herself (she is in her 50s though) and her exact words were “…what, really? Why?”
I couldn’t do that. The flower is pretty, and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Shoshana[/name_f], but [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] is not ready to come back.
[name_f]Sharona[/name_f] (sha-[name_f]ROE[/name_f]-na) maybe?
Who called you a snob? Lol. I respect your opinion ![]()
I am not in love with [name_f]Sharon[/name_f], but I don’t hate it, either! [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] certainly has an interesting history.
I have identical twin cousins named [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] and [name_f]Karen[/name_f] who are in their late 50s. (Their poor mother needed Nameberry!)
However, [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] has such a rich history:
“I am a rose of [name_f]Sharon[/name_f], a lily of the valley.” (Song of [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] 2:1)
One of the most important characters in “The Grapes of Wrath” is called Rosasharn, a nickname for her full name, [name_f]Rose[/name_f] of [name_f]Sharon[/name_f] Joad. Now THAT is quite the name!
Anyway, I think you could do much worse than [name_f]Sharon[/name_f].
However, I would much rather go with a gem like Shallon. Other possibilities are [name_u]Shannon[/name_u], [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], [name_u]Shay[/name_u], etc.
There is always Rosasharn, too.
Not you! A pp mentioned ‘other people’s snobbery’ and it seemed like a dig at me ![]()
