I have managed to find a pretty lengthy list of boy names that I do quite like, but my husband has managed to veto the majority of them. He has currently ranked Fletcher as his top pick, followed by Arden, then Webster, with Tobias and Nolan tied at the bottom.
Part of me really fell in love with Fletcher and started really envisioning that for our boy, but there is just something that I keep getting hung up on with it. I can’t put my finger on it. Like 90% of me likes it and 10% gets a nails on a chalkboard sensation when I say it out loud. Also, our surname ends in -er, so a lot of family think a first name ending in -er wouldn’t flow well.
I couldn’t sleep last night (combo of pregnancy insomnia and a toddler ) and came across Ames and fell in love. I pitched Ames Arthur to him, I think it sound so great with our last name. But he “isn’t feeling” Ames as a first name. He would consider Arthur Ames, but didn’t love it.
Then I started tossing Arden Ames around in my head today and it has really really grown on me. I think it sounds good with our last name. I think Arden works pretty well with big brother Warren (open to hearing differing opinions on that, though). And I can just picture saying “Arden Ames!” out loud a million times a day the way I say “Warren Patrick” 24/7.
I texted Arden Ames to my husband thinking he would like it since he ranked Arden as his second favorite. He responded with “I’m not opposed,” but didn’t act super stoked about it.
I think at this exact moment I think my favorites (from this list, there are others he has totally taken off the board) would be Arden Ames, followed by either Fletcher Thomas or Fletcher Francis, then after that I like the repeating b’s in Tobias Webster. I always come on here for input because my husband is always less than helpful with feedback or direction.
- Arden Ames
- Fletcher Thomas
- Fletcher Francis
- Fletcher Tobias
- Tobias Webster
- Webster Sullivan
- Ames Arthur

I’m partial to [name_m]Webster[/name_m] [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] since I have my own little [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]
All of these are great! I would maybe steer away from -er ending if it sounds too weird when you say it out loud together with your last name. I have to steer away from any name ending in -o because of my last name (sadly taking away [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m], etc).
[name_m]Webster[/name_m] and [name_m]Warren[/name_m] would be a fun sibset, as would [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] and [name_m]Warren[/name_m] (you might end up calling him Toby). I do like [name_u]Arden[/name_u] and [name_m]Warren[/name_m] together too, but they sound a little similar (not enough for me not to like the sibset though). Congrats and good luck!
I have an [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and a [name_u]Raven[/name_u] and never thought we’d get their names mixed up, but we do. [name_f]Every[/name_f]. Single. [name_u]Day[/name_u]. They have an older brother, [name_m]Benton[/name_m], and I never confuse his name with theirs. I guess it’s something about the Rs. That being said, I wouldn’t do [name_u]Arden[/name_u] as a first name with big brother, [name_m]Warren[/name_m]. I chose [name_u]Ames[/name_u] [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] [name_m]Webster[/name_m]. Both go great with big brother without being too similar.
My faves with Warren are Tobias (first for me!), Fletcher, and Ames. Arthur and Thomas would be up there too. I think Webster and Arden somewhat take away from Warren rather than complement - being similar and stronger in certain ways, Webster especially in terms of dominating and Arden in terms of sound. I also think I prefer Arden for a girl, and Auden for a boy.
Having said that about matching Warren, I think individual name (and flow to last name) is always better than “perfect” sibset since a child lives their like mostly without introducing their sibling first.
Finally, I don’t love how it’s the wife/mother who typically brings the long list and ongoing ideas for the husband/father to then choose from/ nix. It’s work, finding a name. I get women are generally more interested and invested in the process - but because it’s work it’s easy to be in the low negotiating position, so I think it should be a “bring one to put on list or an argument for existing one before you get to veto.” Hope it can become something lighter and more evenly distributed between you!
I agree about avoiding [name_u]Arden[/name_u]. [name_u]Arden[/name_u] and [name_m]Warren[/name_m] share so many similar sounds. Maybe that’s why it feels so easy to picture saying this name!
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] [name_m]Webster[/name_m] is hands-down my favorite, but I’m biased because I have a [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] It’s a great name, it sounds good with [name_m]Warren[/name_m] without being matchy, and I’m guessing it sounds good with your surname, too. I also love the repeating B’s.
Runner-up is [name_u]Arden[/name_u] [name_u]Ames[/name_u]. If it grows a little more on your husband, too, it sounds like it could be a good compromise since [name_u]Arden[/name_u] is one of his favorites. I’ve only known one [name_u]Arden[/name_u], an old man, and he wore it well. A little more matchy with [name_m]Warren[/name_m] than I like, but
I agree [name_u]Arden[/name_u] and [name_m]Warren[/name_m] share too much of the same sound. You have a lot of other great choices. I love [name_m]Webster[/name_m] with Warren; if you want to avoid same initial, I like [name_m]Warren[/name_m] and [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] as a handsome set of brothers.
