A question about Harold

Well, my darling daughter is only a week today but I manage to find time during feedings and diaper changes to search the Internet and secretly collect names(my sister says: “[name]Victoria[/name] can spend days without food but she can’t spend an hour without names”, ha ha).
I came across [name]Harold[/name] a few weeks ago but was only able to post it here today. I discussed the name with my boyfriend and it turned out we have sooo different opinions about it!
I classify the name as a handsome vintage and love the nickname [name]Harry[/name](so pretty English feel). But my boyfriend only sees [name]Harold[/name] “[name]Harry[/name]” as a name of a drug addict (we both like the “Requiem For a [name]Dream[/name]” and [name]Harry[/name], drug addict, I suppose was played by [name]Jared[/name] Leto in the film). Or, at best, terrible grandpa name. Not [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] or Scandinavian warrior but an addict or a grandpa…
[name]How[/name] I make him love the name [name]Harold[/name]? I managed to make myself accept his favorite, [name]Bartholomew[/name], but he seems to be uncompromising. Changing the nickname to [name]Hal[/name] is, unfortunately, not an option because neither I nor him like it but I have a good idea of calling little [name]Harold[/name] by his full name.
And, also, what do you think of [name]Harold[/name] “[name]Harry[/name]”? Is an addict association avoidable? I see “Requiem For a [name]Dream[/name]” as quite famous and “cult” film…

Forgot to add, we have a lot of other names on the list we both like but I just don’t understand the way boyfriend gets [name]Harold[/name]. Any thoughts are welcome.

Well, the only [name]Harold[/name] I’ve ever known was an old grandpa. Coolest old guy ever though. I don’t personally like [name]Harold[/name] or [name]Harry[/name], but its nice enough.

[name]Harold[/name] was an actual grandfather of mine so I get that vibe. I don’t consider that a big negative though - a lot of vintage names are back.

[name]Harry[/name] as a NN makes me think of [name]Henry[/name] (classic, good) or [name]Harrison[/name] which is not my style. It doesn’t make me think [name]Harold[/name] at all. I’ve heard [name]Hal[/name] for [name]Harold[/name] though.

My sister likes [name]Harald[/name], which is more of a Danish spelling. She thinks it sounds rakishly Viking.

I don’t particularly want to use it, despite being fond of that grandfather, but it doesn’t make me think junkie at all. [name]Nor[/name] is it any more dated than Nameberry darlings like [name]Pearl[/name] or [name]Beatrice[/name]. [name]Henry[/name] is quite popular - I like [name]Harvey[/name] as a quirkier pick - and [name]Harold[/name] is the crustiest but I could see it coming back.

The only association I have with the name [name]Harold[/name] is the old man who lived next door growing up. I love the name but would never use it because of my son’s name but I do prefer the nickname [name]Hal[/name]. I think the drug addict association is avoidable.

I love [name]Harold[/name] right now! To be honest, though, I do see it as a bit of a fusty Grandpa name; but, for me, that’s not a negative at all! It seems so gentlemanly to me, with an Old English feel. I think [name]Harry[/name] would work very well for a teenager, which is the only age I can imagine [name]Harold[/name] seeming awkward.

I also saw Requiem for a [name]Dream[/name] recently and had completely forgotten that was the character’s name, so I doubt most people would make that association, he’s not a cult character. In fact, most young people are way more likely to associate the name with [name]Harry[/name] Styles from [name]One[/name] Direction, as I believe it’s his full name (only found this out when researching the name [name]Harold[/name]!), and so may see it as quite cool. I think the most prominent dimension of [name]Harold[/name] is that it is a vintage classic.

[name]Harold[/name] reminds me of the chubby kid on the cartoon Hey [name]Arnold[/name]! And when I was growing up my mom’s friend had a HUGE cat named [name]Harold[/name], and he was a mean as he was fat. [name]How[/name] do you feel about [name]Harrison[/name] nn [name]Harry[/name]? Maybe your boyfriend would be on board because of the [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] association?

Thank you ladies!
@stephaniebrooke: I like [name]Harrison[/name] nn [name]Harry[/name]!

I prefer [name]Harald[/name]. It’s how we spell it in Scandinavia, and it’s a big royal name in Norway. It’s actually the name of the current king, as well as two of the most legendary kings Norway’s ever had. It’s a big name in my family, I really like it, regal and handsome. [name]Harold[/name] feels like a grumpy grandfather though.

[name]Harald[/name] is great, ottilie. I have somehow forgotten about the king, wow.

Thanks. Yeah, [name]Harrison[/name] make a compromise but I am not sure if it goes with [name]Cornelia[/name] well…
And I would like to know if [name]Harold[/name]/[name]Harald[/name] makes you think of king or a grandpa or a drug addict, I got really interested.

[name]Harold[/name] is dated in my opinion, so I see what your boyfriend sees, an old man.

I think [name]Harrison[/name] is a nicer option and a good compromise.

Thanks…But actually my daughter has an old-fashioned name. [name]Do[/name] you prefer [name]Cornelia[/name] and [name]Harrison[/name] or [name]Cornelia[/name] and [name]Harold[/name] for a sibset([name]Nelly[/name] and [name]Harry[/name])?
